The Effects Of Dredging On The Stability Of An Ebb-Tidal Delta, Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia, Donald Keith Riggenbach
The Effects Of Dredging On The Stability Of An Ebb-Tidal Delta, Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia, Donald Keith Riggenbach
OES Theses and Dissertations
A channel was dredged in 1965 through the ebb-tidal delta of Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia. The purpose of this study was to determine if this channel has affected the morphological configuration of the delta. It was proposed that the channel caused the dynamically stable delta to become unstable and change its morphology.
Bathymetric comparisons of seven surveys during the last 122 years, including one conducted during this investigation, show that prior to 1962 and the dredging operations, the delta had become dynamically stable. The present survey shows that the delta has changed its shape in response to the interaction of the …
Seasonal Distribution And The Retention Of Some Decapod Crustacean Larvae Within The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Joseph William Goy
Seasonal Distribution And The Retention Of Some Decapod Crustacean Larvae Within The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Joseph William Goy
OES Theses and Dissertations
Planktonic stages or 45 genera and species or decapod larvae were identified and staged from samples taken over a three year period in the lower portion and entrance area or Chesapeake Bay. The distribution of each larval stage of the decapod crustaceans found in the bay was determined and from this, the extent of the respective breeding season was deduced. In 1975, samples were taken monthly from stations along a transect at the baymouth, both at the surface and bottom. Two stations were also occupied over the tidal cycle in daylight and darkness. Evidence is presented that larvae of some …

Sex Pheromone Activity In The Foveal Glands In The Two Species Of Ixodid Ticks: Dermacentor Andersoni (Stiles) And Dermacentor Variabilis (Say), Lynn Anne Collins
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Sex pheromone activity in the foveal glands of female Dermacentor andersoni (Stiles) and Dermacentor variabilis (Say) is described. Autoradiography revealed the accumulation of 36Cl in the foveal glands of females during their first 120 hours of feeding on a 36Cl-labeled host. Emissions collected from these females contained a 36Cl-labeled product. This product, however, was absent in emissions collected from the same females with their foveae dorsales obstructed.
Accumulation of 36Cl in the foveal gland, in conjunction with the release of a 36Cl-labeled product through the foveae dorsales, suggest localization of sex pheromone activity within these …

Kinetic And Binding Studies On L-∝-Glycerophosphate Dehydrogenase, Paul Richard Rosevear
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The properties of the coenzyme, NAD, binding site of chicken muscle L-∝-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase were studied. Adenosine monophosphate, adenosine diphosphate and adenosine diphosphoribose were sha.vn to inhibit the enzyme competitively with respect to NAD. The presence of adenosine, pyrophosphate and ribose regions in the coenzyme binding site of the enzyme was suggested by the inhibitor constants obtained for these compounds.
Disodium monoalkyl phosphates, n-butyl to n-dodecyl phosphate, inclusive, were also shown to inhibit the L-∝-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase catalized reaction competitively with respect to NAD. A positive chain length effect was observed in the binding of these compounds to the enzyme, suggesting the …
Numerical Simulation Of Thermohaline Convection In The Mixed Layer Of The Ocean, Victor Eli Delnore
Numerical Simulation Of Thermohaline Convection In The Mixed Layer Of The Ocean, Victor Eli Delnore
OES Theses and Dissertations
The intradiumal heating and cooling cycle of the mixed layer of a tropical ocean is investigated through the use of a pseudo-two-dimensional numerical model. Particular emphasis is given to two-component diffusion resulting from dynamic instabilities in the water column. The conservation equations for salt and heat include the effects of solar heating, horizontal advectlon, and turbulent fluxes at the sea surface, while wind mixing enter through the use of depth-dependent eddy diffusion coefficients resulting from the wave-orbital shear model of KitaigorodsldLy. All inputs are treated as functions of time-of-day, or calculated via the bulk aerodynamic method.
The entrainment fluxes of …

Similitude Of Mass Transfer Processes In Distorted Froude Model Of An Estuary, Carvel Hall Blair
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The project began with the design and construction of a hydraulic Froude model of the Lafayette River, a small well mixed estuary in Norfolk, Virginia. Horizontal scale is 1/540, vertical scale 1/12 yielding a vertical distortion of 45. Adjustment by roughness strips and screens produced close agreement of model-prototype tide heights, currents, and salinities in the deep reaches comprising 80% of the estuary volume. Some scale effect in velocity and tide height could not be eliminated in the shallow upper branches of the estuary, probably because of the high geometric distortion and the narrowness of the channel at kilometer 6.7. …
