The Perennial March: Britain's Road To Afghanistan, Cole Peterson Apr 2023

The Perennial March: Britain's Road To Afghanistan, Cole Peterson

Honors Projects

The Great Game describes British and Russian imperial expansion in Central Asia as the two powers competed to spread their influence in the region. Historians point to 1830 as the start of British paranoia regarding Russian advances towards India. This neglects to mention British actions during the Greek War of Independence, which saw the nation retreat from the Concert of Europe as well as the growth of anti-Russian sentiment. This paper examines the role of Britain in starting the Great Game, focusing on its self-fulfilling prophecy of Russian expansion in Central Asia, examining how Britain’s exit from the European Congress …

Peasants And The Powerful: Peasant Socio-Economic Organization In Early Medieval Iberia 400-1000 Ce, Drake Ogden

Honors Projects

The early medieval period in Europe (~400-1000 CE) was one of immense political, economic, and social change in Europe, following the collapse of the western Roman Empire and the rise of the post-Roman kingdoms that followed. A consistent question in this period has been the nature of peasant society during this time, and how the changes observed in Europe affected this section of society, which made up the largest portion of society across this period. The study focuses on the condition of peasants in the Iberian peninsula, and how the collapse of the Roman state apparatus, the rise of new …

A Study Of Safe Haven Baby Laws In The United States: One Life Saved Or Too Many Unknowns To Evaluate?, Kolby Brock

Honors Projects

Safe Haven laws allow parents or guardians to legally relinquish an infant without fear of prosecution at a designated safe site, where the infants are provided with temporary care until placed into the care of Child Service Professionals. This honors thesis project analyzes Safe Haven baby laws in their current form in the United States, finding that Safe Havens laws need to be a complement to other programs, as they alone cannot solve infant abandonment. My findings further recommend the need for policy modifications to Safe Haven laws to ensure data is being tracked to be analyzed and to build …

Pharmacogenetics Of Efavirenz And Neuropsychiatric Side Effects In Asian Populations, Navami Shenoy Apr 2023

Pharmacogenetics Of Efavirenz And Neuropsychiatric Side Effects In Asian Populations, Navami Shenoy

Honors Projects

Efavirenz (EFV), a common antiretroviral drug, was the recommended first-line therapy for the treatment for human immunodeficiency virus infection until 2018. Though many high- income countries have transitioned to newer drugs due to their improved efficacy and low toxicity, EFV is still common in many low- and middle-income countries due to the high cost of alternatives. EFV is believed to cause central nervous system (CNS) toxicity and has been linked with neuropsychiatric side effects such as insomnia, hallucinations, headache, depression, and suicidality, though the causal relationship for depression and suicidality is controversial. Several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in CYP2B6— the …

The Safavid Merger: Sufism, Popular Islam, And The Rise Of The Safavids, Sam Miller Apr 2023

The Safavid Merger: Sufism, Popular Islam, And The Rise Of The Safavids, Sam Miller

Honors Projects

The Safavid dynasty represented a major change in Iranian history, most notably for establishing Twelver Shi’ism as the majority and official religion, which continues to this day. The nature of their simultaneous transition from a Sufi religious order to a political movement and their rise to power is, however, a point of debate. Until the 21st century, the established historical narrative was one of a tyrannical, fanatical minority taking power and asserting its particular worldview on an unwilling majority. More recently, there have been increasingly diverse views among historians on the Safavid transition. This paper attempts to enter into the …

The Modern Relationship Between Music And Political Preferences, Teresa Martin Apr 2023

The Modern Relationship Between Music And Political Preferences, Teresa Martin

Honors Projects

Music and politics have been interconnected for centuries, and it is difficult to explain a political event without mentioning the contemporary music creation and vice versa; examples include anti-war music during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, a shift to country music with patriotic undertones after 9/11, and so on. Preliminary research suggests that there could be a connection between political ideologies and liking genres of music, but it is relatively outdated (Fox and Williams 1974). There is research surrounding how political polarization contributes to opposing attitudes and preferences (Sears and Valentino 1997, Prinz 2021), and how music has different origins …

Using Genetic Testing In Order To Improve Retention Rates In Youth Sports, Madison Nelson Apr 2023

Using Genetic Testing In Order To Improve Retention Rates In Youth Sports, Madison Nelson

Honors Projects

Each year in the United States, the number of children participating in organized sports decreases. Children may drop out of sports for numerous reasons, including overuse injuries. Genetic testing may help reduce the number of overuse injuries and improve the retention rate of children in sports. The previously thought nature versus nurture debate is now considered outdated as the birthplace effect (BPE), deliberate practice, and possibly genes (ACTN3 and IGF), all play a role in athletic performance. Common overuse injuries (hamstring injuries, tendinopathies, and Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears) in children are presented, as well as five potential genes to …

Modern Lgbtq+ Representation In Transiciones And My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Haley Pero-Favazzo

Honors Projects

For the past several months, I have been at work on a honors/Global Scholars project that explores the techniques and critical reception of two LGBTQ+ graphic novels: My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris, which centers around a young lesbian preteen, and Transiciones by Élodie Durand, which centers around a mother’s struggle to understand her child’s transition from female to male. My research explores the continued development of graphic novels over the last decade, which has allowed international authors like Elodie Durand and Emil Ferris to openly portray LGBTQ issues through a well-respected literary form that utilizes both storyline …

How Global Urban Food Systems Can Combat Climate Change And Environmental Racism, Simultaneously: A Case Study, Eliza Richardson Apr 2023

How Global Urban Food Systems Can Combat Climate Change And Environmental Racism, Simultaneously: A Case Study, Eliza Richardson

Honors Projects

Urban food systems have become an innovative way for modern cities, farmers, and community members to shift the way we often think about food, and where it comes from, and how it can play a role in both battling the effects of climate change, and environmental racism. In order to further explore the role of urban food systems in addressing these challenges, I used a case study approach to examine these issues both in the United States, and Internationally. The first case study was conducted during the Summer of 2022 when I completed an internship at Nãm Urban Mushroom Farm, …

Brahma And The Problem Of Popularity, Grant Cayton May 2022

Brahma And The Problem Of Popularity, Grant Cayton

Honors Projects

Brahma, the creator, theoretically occupies a major position in Hinduism, but receives virtually no bhakti worship. The study examines potential causes of Brahma’s lack of worship through analysis of scholarship, supplemented by interviews with eight Hindus. The subjects were asked to give their own explanations and evaluate scholarly theories on Brahma’s unpopularity. Scholar Km. Rajani Mishra states that after creation, Brahma has nothing to offer humanity, and argues that Brahma’s character was not compelling enough to retain followers. Greg Bailey suggests that Brahma’s role as creator ties him to pravṛttidharma, a worldly mindset that prevents him from granting salvation. Interviews …

The COVID-19 pandemic had a major effect across the US, but the impact on the school system was a major focus within the media. Due to federal legislation, public schools are required to provide accommodations to children with disabilities in order to make them successful in schools. To bring more understanding to the related services in the public school system, this study investigated the impact COVID- 19 had on the delivery of occupational therapy services provided to children with disabilities in central Ohio public schools from March 2020 to March 2022. This study had thirteen occupational therapists participate, with eleven …
