The Impact Of Occupational Therapy Involvement In Response To Intervention (Rti) And Multi-Tiered System Of Support (Mtss), Alexis C. Sambuco Jul 2023

The Impact Of Occupational Therapy Involvement In Response To Intervention (Rti) And Multi-Tiered System Of Support (Mtss), Alexis C. Sambuco

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

The role of occupational therapists within the school setting is to facilitate student participation in educationally relevant tasks. According to the fourth edition of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, occupational therapists (OTs) can provide consultation to community planning agencies, multidisciplinary teams, and teachers as a method of providing indirect services (AOTA, 2020). Participation in multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) and response to intervention (RtI) is a key way to facilitate this role for school-based clinicians. For my doctoral capstone experience, I designed resources for teachers that targeted fine motor, visual motor, and visual perceptual skills to support …

A New Christmas Eve: Match Day Eve, Gehan A. Pendlebury

The transition of medical student to resident physician represents the student becoming the teacher -- a teacher that will continue to evolve over time. Residents teach medical students, yet residents are taught by their attending physicians. In many ways, Match Day is a milestone marking the beginning of that incremental learning process. The word "doctor" derives from the Latin word “docere” meaning "to teach" as doctors should be teaching their patients good health in their practice of medicine. Likewise, it is an inherent responsibility of all physicians to pass on their knowledge and skills for the betterment of the next …

The Emotional Wellbeing Of Doctoral Students Conducting Qualitative Research With Vulnerable Populations, Stefania Velardo, Sam Elliott May 2021

The Emotional Wellbeing Of Doctoral Students Conducting Qualitative Research With Vulnerable Populations, Stefania Velardo, Sam Elliott

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative studies have the potential to evoke emotional distress among participants, particularly where sensitive issues are explored. Consequently, novice qualitative researchers become well versed in strategies to minimise risk to participants. But what happens to the novice researcher when they are confronted with the emotional account of a participant? While research practices consistently serve to protect the wellbeing of participants, concern for researcher wellbeing is often overlooked. This study explored doctoral students’ experiences of undertaking qualitative research projects with vulnerable populations, and the ways in which this influenced their emotional wellbeing. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six doctoral candidates attending …

Doctoral Capstone Experience In Academia And Policy Development: Nova Southeastern University, Melanie Mariani Apr 2021

Doctoral Capstone Experience In Academia And Policy Development: Nova Southeastern University, Melanie Mariani

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

An exceptional amount of literature points to the benefits of hands-on learning experiences for students enrolled in healthcare programs (Coker, 2009; Doucet, 2012; Thomas et al., 2017 & Velde, 2009). Goals of my doctoral capstone experience (DCE) included: 1) Develop the foundational requirements for Nova Southeastern University (NSU) to increase hands-on experiential student learning and potentially develop an on-site clinic in the future, and 2) Create and deploy educational materials for the students in the class of 2022 to increase their hands-on learning while taking the course virtually. The results include the creation of three sets of clinical reasoning guides …

Culminating Capstone Project: Development Of An Experiential Learning Framework For Graduate Occupational Therapy Students, Daniel S. Pereira Apr 2021

Culminating Capstone Project: Development Of An Experiential Learning Framework For Graduate Occupational Therapy Students, Daniel S. Pereira

Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects

The following capstone project was completed within an educational setting, consisting of education and program development focus areas. The objective was to construct a framework outlining standards and protocols required to implement an experiential learning program. The experiential learning framework would be adaptable to ensure efficacy among various intervention courses. Entry-level doctor of occupational therapy students at Nova Southeastern University were surveyed and identified a desire for experiential learning. Experiential learning for occupational therapy students improved evaluation skills, critical thinking, and inductive and deductive reasoning (Coker, 2009; Doucet & Seale, 2012). Furthermore, experiential learning for occupational therapy students improved student …

Continuity And Change: The Academic Teacher-Student Relationships In The Discourse On The Higher Education Reform In Poland, Justyna Spychalska-Stasiak, Helena Ostrowicka

The Qualitative Report

The article presents the results of research on the discursive models of academic relationships that come to the fore in the academic discourse on the reform of higher education in Poland. The aim of the research was to capture the ways of formulating knowledge about the reform of science and higher education and its subjects (i.e., academic teachers and students). The research material comprised 17 Polish academic monographs published in the years 2011-2014 (immediately after the introduction of the higher education reform in Poland). The direction of the analyses was emergent and inductive and was in line with the assumptions …
