Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic is a unique event that forced K-12 schools to rethink the delivery of instruction to protect the well-being of school system stakeholders. Teachers, school administrators, and parents had to adapt to and embrace new ways of teaching and learning by utilizing available technology. The purpose of this study was to examine the challenges encountered by in-service teachers when moving from face-to-face to online teaching. Design/methodology/approach: This study utilized a qualitative phenomenological research methodology to examine Ecuadorian and Uruguayan teachers’ perceptions and experiences transitioning from face-to-face to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. This comparative study used …

The Need For Adaptive Sports In Society, Caroline Melsa

Honors Capstones

This capstone project presents an exploration and understanding of the perceived benefits of adaptive sports for individuals with disabilities. The exploration has assessed three main types of benefits of adaptive sports (i.e., social, physical, and psychological) as a basis for why adaptive sport should be necessary in society. Research studies done to assess benefits of adaptive sport are also discussed which aid in understanding the findings explored in the project. The project also explores and discusses the gaps and limitations in the research and literature that is available. A major finding from this exploration was that there is less research …

Penguin Players Music Director Digital Binder, Nina P. Caliendo

Honors Capstones

I worked with the Penguin Players here at Northern Illinois University as their head music director this semester. Penguin Players is a group on campus that puts on a musical with adults with disabilities as the stars. These artists are paired one-on-one with a mentor (usually a special education major) who helps them to learn their lines, songs, and dances. During the show the mentors are on stage with the artists but take a back seat to let the artists step into the spotlight. My job for the show is to teach everyone the songs they perform throughout the show. …

Connecting Communities During Crisis: A Case Study Of Nonprofit Agencies, People With Disabilities And Access To Covid-19 Vaccines, Brittany R.. Blomquist Dec 2021

Connecting Communities During Crisis: A Case Study Of Nonprofit Agencies, People With Disabilities And Access To Covid-19 Vaccines, Brittany R.. Blomquist

Honors Capstones

Individuals with disabilities often face unique challenges not experienced by the general population. These circumstances are further exacerbated in rural communities where health care equity is disrupted by a lack of access to transportation resources to health care providers and economic hardships. The COVID-19 pandemic further amplified these inequities, creating new barriers in rural regions, to health access and health information, by demanding virtual access in place of physical access, requiring individuals to own, afford, and knowledgeably operate technology. This case study explores methodologies employed by three nonprofit Centers for Independent Living (CIL) agencies assisting people with disabilities, in rural …

The Storm Is On Us: Communities And Military Mobilization In Civil War Chicago, Jeremy R. Knoll Dec 2021

The Storm Is On Us: Communities And Military Mobilization In Civil War Chicago, Jeremy R. Knoll

Honors Capstones

This research project uses primary sources such as regimental histories, records kept by the Adjutant General of Illinois, reporting from the Chicago Tribune, and the published and unpublished memoirs, diaries, and letters of both soldiers and civilians to examine the role communities played in military mobilization in Chicago during the Civil War. An urban environment like Chicago had many such communities, including religious denominations, professional and commercial organizations, militia units, immigrant communities, and political organizations. These communities strongly impacted the mobilization process in Chicago by organizing and supporting certain units, and individual Chicagoans were influenced by their community affiliations when …

Exercise And The Brain: What Can Fit-U Do For You?, Kaitlin R. Miller Dec 2021

Exercise And The Brain: What Can Fit-U Do For You?, Kaitlin R. Miller

Honors Capstones

This project was a pilot study exploring the effects of an aerobic program, FIT-U, and factors influencing cognitive outcomes for healthy aging individuals and those with neurogenic cognitive-communicative disorders. While aerobic exercise has been shown to improve cognition in both cases, this study looked into the factors that influence this phenomenon. Three regular attendees of FIT-U were given a letter fluency test before and after FIT-U, using different letters each time, but balanced in terms of difficulty. By using single subject methodology, the data were consistent with a trend towards improved VF scores following each FIT-U session for two participants. …

Cut From A Different Cloth: Middle-Class Women And The Chicago Men's Garment Workers' Strike Of 1910-1911, Cameron H. Simpson Dec 2021

Cut From A Different Cloth: Middle-Class Women And The Chicago Men's Garment Workers' Strike Of 1910-1911, Cameron H. Simpson

Honors Capstones

The Chicago men’s garment workers began a strike in late 1910 that extended through the winter into 1911 and began among women and people of immigrant backgrounds, only incorporating men once it picked up steam. The lack of uniformity among the striking workers led to a fragmented approach to the strike and eventually, middle-class women came to the aid of factory workers and took over organization of the strike. My thesis sheds light on how and why the women involved in this strike made their marks on Chicago labor history, both through their organizing and through their philanthropic work.

The Impact Of Peer Suicide During Adolescence On Mental Health: An Adult Perspective, Cassandra J. Vanzuiden

Honors Capstones

Problem: Initial interventions after the suicide of adolescents typically focus on those directly impacted by the death, however, little is known about the impact the suicide of a peer can have on adolescents, regardless of their relationship with the decedent. This study aims to understand how peer suicide has affected adolescents and to find resources that would help address their future mental health concerns. Method: A qualitative study was conducted consisting of interviews with four adults between the ages of 20 to 23 and six questions were asked of the participants surrounding their experiences with peer suicide during adolescence. Findings: …

Deafness In Nicu Babies, Adrienne N. Gennell Dec 2021

Deafness In Nicu Babies, Adrienne N. Gennell

Honors Capstones

Babies that require NICU stays after birth face a lot of difficulty due to a variety of reasons. Babies can be admitted to the NICU for problems such as prematurity, hyperbilirubinemia, respiratory or cardiovascular complications, infections, and more. Being admitted to the NICU exposes these babies to certain risk factors that can have long term effects and can lead to complications, such as hearing loss. NICU infants are at double the risk for hearing loss compared to infants that are carried to term, and 24-46% of NICU admissions are diagnosed with hearing loss (Pourarian et al., 2012). I was personally …

Tales Of Mortality, Gregory S. Padgett

Student Projects

Tales of Mortality is a one-person exhibition of prints and drawings. The exhibited work is meant to be a representation of my psyche wrestling with notions of divinity and mortality depicted through narrative illustrations in a style evocative of American Realism. The narratives I depict combine haunting images of death, religion and nature as a call for deep reflection and open communication on the reality of impermanence.

Preparing For Class: Actions And Resources Of Introductory Biology Students, Tina M. Ballard, Sabah Sattar, Kendra D. Wright, Jaime L. Sabel, Heather E. Bergan-Roller

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

Instructors want students to be prepared for class. There are several different resources and activities available to help students prepare for class, but very little is known about how students choose to prepare for class in the context of undergraduate biology. In this study, we used content analysis to investigate what students do to prepare for an introductory biology course, and if and how that preparation differed under two different conditions. Students were either directed to search out and choose their resources to prepare for class (choice treatment) or assigned specific pages from a textbook (text treatment). Students in the …

Mathematicians' Beliefs, Instruction, And Students' Beliefs: How Related Are They?, Rachel L. Rupnow Nov 2021

Mathematicians' Beliefs, Instruction, And Students' Beliefs: How Related Are They?, Rachel L. Rupnow

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

It is generally accepted that teachers' beliefs impact their instructional choices, but characterizations of that relationship are limited in college settings. Furthermore, examinations of instructor beliefs, instruction, and student beliefs together in one setting are rarely described. Based on interviews with two Abstract Algebra instructors, classroom video from three units of instruction, and survey and interview data from students in the classes, this paper examines instructors' stated beliefs, ways these beliefs manifested in their teaching, and students' beliefs across the course. Both instructors made curricular choices clearly aligned with their stated views of the nature of mathematics, learning, and teaching. …

How Covid-19 Affected The Academic Internship Experience, Jonathan Drilling Nov 2021

How Covid-19 Affected The Academic Internship Experience, Jonathan Drilling

Honors Capstones

My research paper examines the accounting interns’ perceptions of working in a remote environment due to COVID-19, and how the employers demonstrated and/or showed interns the firm’s or company’s culture. Specifically, I surveyed accounting students who participated in an academic internship during the COVID-19 pandemic about their perceptions of their internship firm’s culture, coaching and mentoring, networking opportunities, and positive and negatives about their overall experience. My findings are important because internships are a key part of firm’s talent acquisition and provides both interns and their respective firms an opportunity to see whether the prospective employee or firm is a …

Impact Of Covid-19 On Informal Caregiver Stress, Emma M. Vanzuiden Nov 2021

Impact Of Covid-19 On Informal Caregiver Stress, Emma M. Vanzuiden

Honors Capstones

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced the entire world to isolate, as no one knew exactly what it was, how it was spread, or who was most vulnerable to fatal consequences. This global lockdown cut people off from a lot of necessary resources, including access to any healthcare that wasn’t deemed essential. While priorities shifted to protect vulnerable populations, the system failed to fully prepare their informal caregivers for taking over all of their physical, psychological, and social needs. An informal caregiver is anyone providing care for another individual outside of a professional setting. This literature review aimed to …

The Care And Management Of A Newborn With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Alexis M. Combs Nov 2021

The Care And Management Of A Newborn With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Alexis M. Combs

Honors Capstones

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in street drug and opioid use across the world. Throughout the United States, at least one newborn is affected by Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) every fifteen minutes (Schierholz et al., 2021). NAS occurs when the newborn experiences withdrawal symptoms due to the mother’s drug use while pregnant. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze which care and management factors/lifestyle choices create the greatest outcomes for newborns born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. A literature review was conducted with research articles and journals within the time frame of 2009-2021 …

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

This literature review explores the impact of COVID-19 on reference and research services in academic libraries. The first half of the review identifies changes and initiatives during the previous ten years using meaningful examples of changes. Gathering information from listservs, conference schedules, trade publications, websites, and emerging research, the second half of this review revisits changes to reference and research services from Spring 2020-Summer 2021. The literature is extensive, for that reason, we have identified meaningful experiences that can be translated into the pre- and intra-pandemic service practices. The pandemic advanced many existing and emerging trends, allowed libraries to find …

Establishing A Baseline Of Science Communication Skills In An Undergraduate Environmental Science Course, Rashmi Shivni, Christina Cline, Morgan Newport, Shupei Yuan, Heather E. Bergan-Roller

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background Seminal reports, based on recommendations by educators, scientists, and in collaboration with students, have called for undergraduate curricula to engage students in some of the same practices as scientists—one of which is communicating science with a general, non-scientific audience (SciComm). Unfortunately, very little research has focused on helping students develop these skills. An important early step in creating effective and efficient curricula is understanding what baseline skills students have prior to instruction. Here, we used the Essential Elements for Effective Science Communication (EEES) framework to survey the SciComm skills of students in an environmental science course in which they …

The Doomed Constitutional Case Against Exclusive Representation, Michael M. Oswalt

College of Law Faculty Publications

When the Supreme Court decided Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) in 2018, the decision not only made it unconstitutional for public sector unions to require “fair share fees” for negotiating contracts and defending workers, it also set off a litigation landslide. Literally hundreds of cases have waded through the courts urging various theoretical extensions of Janus that—boiled down—seek to starve unions and their members of even more funding

How To is a one-person exhibition of mixed media drawings and prints. The exhibited work is meant to convey my personal explorations and representations of my identity crisis as a Taiwanese-American woman in the forms of deconstructed instruction panels. Additionally, How To is my representation of how Asians and Asian Americans are perceived in the United States through the model minority myth. Identity is nuanced and evolves over time. When I first acknowledged my identity crisis, I wanted a concrete solution, a set of instructions that others had followed to resolve their own crises. Follow a list of steps; learn …

Heart Of The Cards: The Underlying Social Framework Of The Yu-Gi-Oh Community, Kendall S. Nagi Apr 2021

Heart Of The Cards: The Underlying Social Framework Of The Yu-Gi-Oh Community, Kendall S. Nagi

Honors Capstones

Trading card games (TCGs) are a significantly understudied side of gaming culture within sociology. Plenty of research exists on role playing games, and tabletop gaming in general, but little research exists on the sociological aspects of TCGs, particularly on the culture of players. The purpose of this study is to contribute to that knowledge gap through an ethnographic study of the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG community. Data collection consisted of a participant observation method, while analysis of the findings was informed by Goffman’s Frame Analysis theory. The main finding of the study was that the culture around Yu-Gi-Oh is largely defined by …
