Honors Capstones

This multi-phase project was proposed as a senior design project for the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology at Northern Illinois University by The Morton Arboretum, which is located in Lisle, IL. The ultimate objective of the project was to develop a universal sensor mount capable of accommodating small scientific instruments that can clamp onto tree canopy branches and is capable of being deployed and retrieved with a DJI Matrice 600 Pro unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The main motivation behind this project is that the tree canopy environment is difficult to study, as it cannot be easily accessed by humans. …

Wildlife Ecology And Conservation In A Suburban Preserve Matrix: Applications Of Long-Term Monitoring Data, John Peter Vanek

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Wildlife is important to humans, offering economic, nutritional, ecological, and socio-cultural value. However, vertebrate biodiversity is being lost at rates 100 times greater than the background extinction rate, threatening human livelihood via the loss of ecosystem services. These human-induced species losses are primarily due to habitat destruction, which is increasingly tied to urban development. Conservation of wildlife resources is therefore imperative in a world where more than 50% of the human population, and 80% of people living in the United States, now live in urban areas. In this dissertation, I demonstrate how monitoring data can be applied to answer questions …

This dissertation is organized into three separate papers. Paper 1 provides a historical context for disciplinary practices used for students in public schools both in Illinois and throughout the country and explores new discipline practices that have emerged since the passing of SB100. Paper 2 examines the implementation of SB100 through an SDT framework to investigate …
