Honors Capstones

According to the CDC, there were 5.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease in 2013 (CDC 2013). That number is expected to nearly triple in 2050 as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age. Underutilization of services is something experienced by many demographics and is a considerable issue for individuals with dementia. This study sought to uncover factors correlated with underutilization of services for people with dementia through both a literature review and sit-down interviews with three healthcare professionals. Results indicated that cultural, financial, attitudinal and knowledge barriers exist for PwD (people with dementia) and their caregivers and may interfere …

Effects Of The Great Recession On Non-Metropolitan Illinois And The Midwest, Rachel L. Martin Dec 2016

Effects Of The Great Recession On Non-Metropolitan Illinois And The Midwest, Rachel L. Martin

Honors Capstones

This research examines the recovery of the employment rate in non-metropolitan Illinois and the Midwest after the Great Recession. Data from the 2010 U.S. Census as well as the Bureau of Labor Statistics was used to compile labor statistics as well as socioeconomic data for use in a linear regression model estimating change in employment. My hypothesis was that smaller, non-metropolitan areas of the country observed less growth in the employment change rate than larger areas. Though this hypothesis was not confirmed, other factors related to race and education appeared to play a role in the employment change rate. This …

Making The Classroom More Student-Centered, Alyssa R. Johnson

Honors Capstones

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of behavior management techniques in the classroom and to determine if students learn best in a student-centered classroom or a teacher-centered classroom. This exploration through interviews and research, will help to find out how teachers create a positive learning environment for a diverse group of students in the classroom and how a student-centered technique versus how a teacher-centered technique works in the classroom. In my opinion, if teachers do not set up a positive learning environment for all students in their classroom, then they will not be in control of …

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Fluorescein-Tagged Carborane For Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (Bnct), Lucas A. Kuzmanic

Honors Capstones

Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) is a bimodal cancer treatment that involves killing cancer cells through a nuclear reaction of two nontoxic species, boron-10 (10B) and thermal neutrons. There are currently only two FDA-approved drugs for this promising area of cancer therapy, so present research focuses on the synthesis of novel compounds with high boron content as well as methods for their delivery into the tumor cell. A fluorescent tag can allow the observation of the delivery vehicle’s uptake during biodistribution studies. Accordingly, fluorescein was conjugated with iodinated 1-methyl-o-carborane and characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy …

Here And There: Code Switching And The Politics Of Spanish-Language Identity In Latina Women's Writing, Marilou. Terrones Dec 2016

Here And There: Code Switching And The Politics Of Spanish-Language Identity In Latina Women's Writing, Marilou. Terrones

Honors Capstones

Language is as much a form of communication as it is a form of identity. This research focuses on Latino interactions where code-switching is used, revealing who the characters are and what is significant to them. I analyzed when and how often characters turned to CS during their interactions, so that I would understand why. I learned that CS occurs in between languages and dialects. CS, then, isn't only used by speakers who include multiple languages in each sentence; it is also used when we change the tone of our speech. It's important to recognize that CS is not a …

Motivation In Mathematics, Andre J. Richmond Dec 2016

Motivation In Mathematics, Andre J. Richmond

Honors Capstones

I conducted a review of existing mathematics education research on students’ motivation related to mathematics learning. My initial research questions were: “What are the constructs of student motivation as related to mathematics learning?” and “How do they these constructs inform mathematical teaching practice?” The research method that I decided to used was secondary research. I found that motivation can be understood in terms of self-efficacy, cognitive engagement, skill development, achievement motivation, self-regulation, and mindset about mathematics. Students’ unproductive beliefs can undermine their progress in mathematics learning. Motivation is what drives a person to do something. As a future teacher, I …

Automated Barrel Cleaner, Brian C. Gumino Dec 2016

Automated Barrel Cleaner, Brian C. Gumino

Honors Capstones

Numerous industrial companies use 55 and 30 gallon barrels to hold, transport, and dispense liquids and chemicals. Due to this there are many businesses that will reuse their barrels. In order to reuse their barrels, they must clean them to ensure there is no cross contamination from contents that were in the barrel before placing new contents in them. This is normally a time consuming process for most businesses depending on the material that was inside the barrel. With the hefty time relationship related to cleaning barrels most companies either dispose of their barrels, either legally or sometimes illegally, or …

Investigating The Effects Of Environmental Treatment On Social Stress, Depression And Anxiety, Blessy Johnson Dec 2016

Investigating The Effects Of Environmental Treatment On Social Stress, Depression And Anxiety, Blessy Johnson

Honors Capstones

In the proposed study we will be investigating how age affects the responsiveness to EE, willingness to exercise, and depression- and anxiety-like behaviors in prairie voles that are subjected to social isolation. Previous research findings show that EE helps in the prevention and remediation of social isolation induced depressive and anxiety related behaviors (Van Praag, Kempermann & Gage, 2000).Therefore, in this study we are hypothesizing that the older prairie voles will be less responsive to EE when compared to younger animals because of less adaptability and flexibility. In addition, older voles will show less remediation of social isolation induced depressive …

The New Radicals: How Wage Labor, Physical Abuse And An Agrarian Crisis Shaped Women's Participation In The Zapatista Rebellion, Patrick E. Brady

Honors Capstones

My experiences in San Cristóbal de las Casas have been the primary motivation for my interest in female Zapatistas. Ever since I concluded my research project, I have had a question that has been largely unanswered by scholars. What are the separate economic and social factors that motivated indigenous Tetzel and Tzotzil men and women to volunteer in the Zapatista Rebellion, and how has feminism influenced indigenous women’s participation in the rebellion? Up to this point, few historians have studied the gendered nature of the causes for indigenous participation in the EZLN. Those who have were concerned with the impact …

Connecting Mothers And Infants In The Nicu, O.N. Lloyd Dec 2016

Connecting Mothers And Infants In The Nicu, O.N. Lloyd

Honors Capstones

When one thinks of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), technical skills and electronic monitoring are often considered the most important. While this may be appropriate when considering the maternal-infant experience in the NICU from a medical perspective, it is far from the case from the nursing perspective. As nurses, it is our responsibility and duty to care holistically for our patients’ being, which includes their mental and emotional strength as well as their physical and medical needs. In the context of mothers and babies, this means doing everything in nurse’s power to promote the maternal-infant bond. While this may …

Shyness Mindset Beliefs And Attentional Bias: An Experimental Study, Amber M. Chamberlain Nov 2016

Shyness Mindset Beliefs And Attentional Bias: An Experimental Study, Amber M. Chamberlain

Honors Capstones

Social behavior depends one's perceived level of shyness and the degree to which one believes that level of shyness is fixed versus malleable. Shy entity theorists maintain a fixed mindset and believe that shyness is a trait about themselves that cannot be altered. Shy incremental theorists hold a growth mindset and believe that behavior can change with experience (Beer, 2002). Past studies have shown that interventions can alter mindset beliefs and doing so affects behavior and performance (Aronson, Fried, & Good, 2002). Persons with a fixed shyness mindset have a tendency to view situations that provoke anxiety as threatening (Pergamin-Hight, …

Essays In Financial Economics, Mohammadjavad Pakdel Jan 2016

Essays In Financial Economics, Mohammadjavad Pakdel

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two self-contained essays. The first essay compares out-of-sample performance of asset allocation using forward-looking information and backward-looking information. The existing literature processes forward-looking and backward-looking information using different models and consequently different sets of assumptions. Therefore, one might wonder if superior performance of portfolios using these two sources of information should be attributed to superiority of sources of information or superiority of models underlying them. In contrast, this study uses the identical stochastic volatility model to process both forward-looking and backward-looking information. The empirical results of this study show that the investor will be significantly better …

Do Folivores Deplete Patches? : Foraging Behavior And The Dynamics Of Resource Use In The Costa Rican Mantled Howler (Alouatta Palliata), Jessica Ritsche

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Two general assumptions have often been made about folivorous primates: first, that feeding competition is low or absent because leaves are a superabundant and evenly dispersed resource, and as a result, that feeding competition does not constrain the size of folivorous groups. However, many folivorous primates maintain smaller group sizes. In this study, I aimed to examine this 'folivore paradox' by testing the hypothesis that mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) deplete localized patches of young leaves and therefore experience feeding competition. One group of 8 adult individuals was studied July and August 2015 at Piro Research Station in the Osa …
