A Study Of Lotus 1-2-3 Software, Karen Draeger Jan 1987

A Study Of Lotus 1-2-3 Software, Karen Draeger

Honors Capstones

It was my goal to learn how to use the Lotus 1-2-3 software by using Steven C. Ross's book Understanding and Using Lotus 1-2-3. I chose to learn a spreadsheet operation because of its versatility. Spreadsheet programs are now found in a wide range of applications. They allow the manipulation of complex groups of numbers which makes equations and formulas much less threatening. Spreadsheets can turn hours of hand calculations into seconds of machine time, which allows the investigation of many different possibilities. I chose specifically to learn Lotus 1-2-3 because of its popularity both in the academic field and …

The Technology Of A Ballistic Missle Defense And Its Effect On Strategic Thought, Eric E. Frisch Jan 1987

The Technology Of A Ballistic Missle Defense And Its Effect On Strategic Thought, Eric E. Frisch

Honors Capstones

This paper will examine the Strategic Defense Initiative, or “Star Wars” ballistic missile defense. It will examine the proposed multilayered system, its strengths and weaknesses, and conclude with a discussion of the impact SDI has had on strategic thought. It will try to answer the fundamental question of whether the proposed BMD (ballistic missile defense) will create a more secure and stable world for the United States and its allies, or one less so filled with “new hazards to the security of all.”

20th Century Dust Jacket Design : Formulation Of Design And Production, Anne Schedler Jan 1987

20th Century Dust Jacket Design : Formulation Of Design And Production, Anne Schedler

Honors Capstones

Designing and preparing the jacket for NIU Press’ Roosevelt Confronts Hitler proved to be very interesting, involving discussion with and approval from 2 editors, the press director and the senior designer. At the outset the project was defined as purely typographical, requiring that the visuals remain somewhat ambiguous or non-specific. The reasoning here was that the book’s content focused on the socio-economic reasons that brought the U.S. into World War II, and viewed the morality, personality and other more traditionally glorified factors to be purely secondary. As the work progressed, the use of strong complimentary colors, contrasting type weights and …

A Guide To Niu Computer Facilities, Sandra Denise Saylor Jan 1987

A Guide To Niu Computer Facilities, Sandra Denise Saylor

Honors Capstones

Northern Illinois University provides an extremely modern and diverse computing environment for its students, faculty, and staff. Computer facilities on campus include an on-site Amdahl mainframe computer, IBM and Harris minicomputers, and IBM, Apple, Kaypro, and Corona microcomputers. The diverse computer facilities at NIU help meet the computing needs of thousands of people, from almost every academic and administrative department on campus. But for those individuals new to the campus, this diversity often makes it difficult to determine exactly what facilities exist on campus, which of these facilities they can and should access, and how they can learn to access …

Communication Ideals And Practices In The Family : How Parents Listen To Children, Christine G. Moudry Jan 1987

Communication Ideals And Practices In The Family : How Parents Listen To Children, Christine G. Moudry

Honors Capstones

How do parents listen to their children? What listening behaviors are practiced in the family? What is the ideal communication between parents and children? An examination of the research and the instructional material for parents on listening to children reveals some general findings in this area. The majority of the literature focuses on the ideal listening behaviors for parents, rather than the listening behaviors that are actually taking place.

Optical Density Gradients Measured On A Liquid-Liquid Interface, Judith M. Luebke Jan 1987

Optical Density Gradients Measured On A Liquid-Liquid Interface, Judith M. Luebke

Honors Capstones

There are two areas in analytical chemistry which have yet to be studied extensively. These areas are the study of macromolecules and the study of surfaces. This thesis discusses research done on an interfacial surface to discover how the interface reacts when potential charge is applied to it. The thesis presents a new optical method modification used to study the rate of diffusion in two mutually immiscible liquids. The liquids require electrolytes in them to make the study possible. The results indicate that the rate is concentration as well as current dependent.

Synthesis Of Sulfonamide Derivatives For Ispf Inhibition, Eric G. Nickel Jan 1987

Synthesis Of Sulfonamide Derivatives For Ispf Inhibition, Eric G. Nickel

Honors Capstones

All isomers of the DPP's prepared in the reports cited were characterized by melting points and UV spectral information. The DDP's prepared in this study are in agreement with the MP's and UV data of the all trans isomers previously characterized. The method used by Kuhn and Winterstein, however, did not list any yields for the higher order polyenes, and the process itself is rather involved for producing a series of DPP. Also, a detailed study of chemical doping with respect to the changes in the UV spectra and conductivity of these polyenes has never been examined.

Synthetic And Structural Investigations Of Neutral Solvent/Crown Ether Interactions And F-Element/Crown Ether Complexation, Eric John Voss Jan 1987

Synthetic And Structural Investigations Of Neutral Solvent/Crown Ether Interactions And F-Element/Crown Ether Complexation, Eric John Voss

Honors Capstones

In my senior honors research project, the study of neutral solvent/crown ether interactions and f-element/crown ether complexes, I have been investigating the conditions under which water molecules may be excluded from a late lanthanide ion's primary coordination sphere by complexation of a crown ether ligand. Our group has found water molecules to be strongly retained when using hydrated f-element salts. When the chloride ion is utilized, as in much of our current work, the water molecules stabilize the metal ion by coordination, the chloride ions by hydrogen bonding, and they hydrogen bond the crown ether, as in [M(OH₂)₈]Cl₃·15-crown-5 (M = …

Real Estate And The 1986 Tax Reform Act, Brian W. Baugh Jan 1987

Real Estate And The 1986 Tax Reform Act, Brian W. Baugh

Honors Capstones

The 1986 Tax Reform Act has made sweeping changed in the nation's tax code. While the Code has been totally revamped, the investors of real estate seem to be the main target of the Act. Changes in capital gain treatment, depreciation, limits on passive loss deductions, limits on investment interest deductions, and the extension of the at-risk rules to real estate have dealt a severe blow to the real estate investor. Thus through the Act Congress has virtually eliminated the real estate tax shelter. Moreover, while the Act has immediate effects on real estate, the enormous revamping will probably effect …

Sources For The Idiosyncrasies Of The Carpet Pages In The Lindisfarne Gospel, Nanette R. Dube Jan 1987

Sources For The Idiosyncrasies Of The Carpet Pages In The Lindisfarne Gospel, Nanette R. Dube

Honors Capstones

The carpet pages in the Insular gospel manuscripts have always been renowned for their great beauty and intricacies that appeal visually and aesthetically. But what has become more and more apparent is their intentional appeal to the intellect as well as the eye. The decoration in the gospels consists of embellishment of the text, figure renditions, and full pages of abstract design, known as carpet pages. These jewel like illuminations were indisputable proof to the early christians in Great Britain of the splendor and majesty of God's word. However, to the learned man who was current with the travels in …

Image Advertising : The Art Of Corporate Self-Expression, Elaine M. Decho

Honors Capstones

As if they did not already have enough to worry about, corporate managers in recent years have been called on to make decisions in an area that is too seldom covered by their experience and training, and area that seems remote from the profit-and-loss picture. Many companies are asking themselves, "How are we being perceived among our various publics? How can we improve our visibility and image? What should that image even be?" ... Call it image advertising or public relations, corporate identity is what every company wants yet so few are willing to work at full time.

Leaving On A Deregulated Jet Plane, Maybe, Mary Ann Dick Jan 1987

Leaving On A Deregulated Jet Plane, Maybe, Mary Ann Dick

Honors Capstones

In the past few years, there have been major changes in the airline industry. These changes have come about because of the deregulation act of 1978. The industry had been regulated almost since its inception. In 1938 the Civil Aeronautics Board was established to economically regulate the industry. CAB had control over authorizing new carriers, new routes, and fares. Since deregulation, the carriers have control over setting their own fares, and there are no longer barriers to entry or exit. In looking at effects of deregulation it is important to first get an understanding of the theory of market organization …

The Effect Of The Tax Reform Act Of 1986 On Itemized Deductions, Aarin Fine

Honors Capstones

On October 22, 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Tax Reform Act of 1986. The act is a historical document that makes the most sweeping changes to the Internal Revenue Code since its inception in 1913. In effect, the Act will rewrite the Internal Revenue Code and will affect each and every individual who pays a Federal income tax. The purpose of the Act is trifold. First, the act aims to make the tax system simpler by eliminating certain deductions and reducing the need for recordkeeping. Second, the Act aims to make the tax system fairer, whereby individuals …

The History Of Banking And Of The Regulations Of The Banking Industry, Charles Sullivan Jan 1987

The History Of Banking And Of The Regulations Of The Banking Industry, Charles Sullivan

Honors Capstones

Throughout history, the United States economy has undergone periods of regulation followed by periods of deregulation. Within the past decade we have witnessed deregulation in the airline industry, the trucking industry, the railroad industry, and perhaps most recently the deregulation of the financial industry. The deregulation of the financial industry in the form of the DEPOSITORY INSTITUTIONS DEREGULATION AND MONETARY CONTROL ACT OF 1980 and the GARN-ST. GERMAIN DEPOSITORY INSTITUTION ACT OF 1982 have been considered landmark legislations in this, the period of deregulation. The reason for such importance being placed on these two particular pieces of legislation is due …

The Parliamentary Debates And Controversy Surrounding Oliver Cromwell's Statue : England's Shifting Sentiments Toward Cromwell's Reputation 1658-1900, Jeffrey L. Boelk

Honors Capstones

With his death on 3 September 1658, Oliver Cromwell’s reputation began a stormy journey. During the Restoration, it reached its nadir, but slowly rose with political, economic, and social changes in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The elevation of Cromwell’s reputation notably accelerated in the early nineteenth century. In the early 1840s, an effigy of Cromwell was proposed to be placed in the precincts of the newly-built Houses of Parliament at Westminster Hall. The Parliamentary and public controversy that ensued sporadically until the early 1900s was fierce and acrimonious. The stiffest opposition to the statue’s erection came, not surprisingly, from …

A Comparison Of Attitudes And Goals Of Eligible Students : Joiners Versus Non-Joiners, Sharon L. Sawdo

Honors Capstones

An excerpt from the 1986-87 Northern Illinois University Honors Program Handbook states the philosophy of the NIU Honors Program. The philosophy suggests that the program is directed toward highly capable students with inquiring minds who wish to work independently on projects of their own design and who value the ability to interact with faculty in creating these independent projects. In past years, however, the Honors staff and faculty have questioned whether the philosophy they promote is in agreement with the philosophy of the highly capable students with whom they work. Are students with “high intellectual potential and demonstrated ability” interested …
