Protection Of The New York City Water Supply Land Development Threats And The Programs To Control Them, Werner Mueller
Protection Of The New York City Water Supply Land Development Threats And The Programs To Control Them, Werner Mueller
Theses
The Surface Water Treatment Rule under the Safe Drinking Water Act requires that all surface water sources used for drinking water must be filtered, unless the purveyor can demonstrate that the water is of such high quality that filtration is not required. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) operates the New York City water supply system and is taking actions to ensure that the water supplied from the Catskill -- Delaware system remains of high enough quality to maintain an avoidance of filtration determination granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). New watershed rules and regulations have …
Chemical Volatilization Of Heavy Metals For Waste Separation And Real Time Metals Analysis, Mohammad Nasr Ul-Alam
Chemical Volatilization Of Heavy Metals For Waste Separation And Real Time Metals Analysis, Mohammad Nasr Ul-Alam
Theses
One of the major challenges in environmental analysis concerns the rapid and sensitive detection of metals emitted from combustion stacks. An interesting concept for real time analysis is to convert airborne metal oxide particles in a flow reactor into relatively volatile compounds of a single class, and then analyze in the gas phase. In this project, kinetics of chemical volatilization reaction between Sb2O3 and HCl was investigated. To achieve this a laboratory volatilization flow reactor was built and data was collected for the volatilization reaction in terms of conversion, inlet and outlet concentrations and flow rates. A …
Variable Gain Control Of Brushless Dc Motor Control With Low Resolution Sensors, Chung-Hsiang Wang
Variable Gain Control Of Brushless Dc Motor Control With Low Resolution Sensors, Chung-Hsiang Wang
Theses
In this work, feasibility of using low cost, low resolution sensor for high performance brushless dc (BLDC) motor speed control is investigated. Conventional control, using a tachometer or high resolution encoder, suffers from drawbacks such as high cost, large physical volume, and high sensor processing bandwidth. On the other hand, sensorless BLDC motor, appealing in its hardware simplicity, does not provide sufficient fast performance. Using a standard low resolution sensor, such as a hall sensor or commutation encoder, a compromise between cost and performance can be obtained. However, the use of a low resolution sensor does pose a challenge to …

Transforming Nature Of Place And Route 280, Peteris Ratas
Theses
This thesis studies the nature of place, which is a specific, identified location in space, in the conditions of driving in a car on a highway. This study opposes the common opinion that highways destroy identity of a specific location and they have only utilitarian role. This thesis wants to prove that on Route 280 exist a possibility for an identity of a location and that the highway is a place, but the traditional dimensions of a place are modified by high-speed travel in a car. It will analyze actual observations on Route 280.
Traditionally, space was inhabited at slow …

Study Of The Effects Of Deuterium Implantation Upon The Performance Of Thin-Oxide Cmos Devices, Sumit Kishore
Study Of The Effects Of Deuterium Implantation Upon The Performance Of Thin-Oxide Cmos Devices, Sumit Kishore
Theses
The use of ultra thin oxide films in modem semiconductor devices makes them increasingly susceptible to damage due to the hot carrier damage. Deuterium in place of hydrogen was introduced by ion implantation at the silicon oxide-silicon interface during fabrication to satisfy the dangling bonds. Deuterium was implanted at energies of 15, 25 and 35 keV and at a dose of 1x1014/cm2. Some of the wafers were subjected to N2O annealing following gate oxide growth. It was demonstrated that ion implantation is an effective means of introduction of deuterium. Deuterium implantation brings about a …

Interventions Of Water Jet Technology On Skin Surgery, Kittipat Vichyavichien
Interventions Of Water Jet Technology On Skin Surgery, Kittipat Vichyavichien
Theses
The perfect and precise surgical cut, similar to today's laser one, is very important in many surgeries, especially in dissection and to recanaize arterial occlusive lessions. Causing no coagulation is one of the advantages of water jet because it generates no heat. It also provides omni-directional cutting capabilities at very high speeds, resulting edge quality that is usually superior to other existing conventional cutting processes. Debris is always carried away from incisions by jet stream and less damaged tissue, than mechanical incisions. In addition, water jet exerts minimal contact pressure on the tissue being cut due to the small diameter …
Alcoholism : Medicalization By The Masses In Post-Prohibition America, Stephen Raymond Patnode
Alcoholism : Medicalization By The Masses In Post-Prohibition America, Stephen Raymond Patnode
Theses
The medicalization of America is typically presented as a top-down, doctor-driven phenomenon. I argue that in the case of alcoholism, this model leaves out the community-level social activism of individuals who were identifying themselves as members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Any description of the popularization of the disease concept of alcoholism that does not take into account the efforts of these individuals is missing a key element. My thesis attempts to incorporate these individuals into the historical narrative.
If we are to focus on the efforts of Alcoholics Anonymous in framing alcoholism as a disease, the 1930s represent a crucial turning …
Mutual Interference Investigation Of Cebus And X-10 Powerline Signaling, Sajid Pallithotungal
Mutual Interference Investigation Of Cebus And X-10 Powerline Signaling, Sajid Pallithotungal
Theses
Powerline control signaling using CEBus has great potential towards inexpensive home automation. CEBus transmits at 10 kBps using spread spectrum in the 100-400 kHz band while X-l0 sends 60 Bps using bursts of 120 kHz carrier on the power line. However, these two signals may destructively interfere when present simultaneously. X-10 is narrow band and interferes with the CEBus spread spectrum signal. This thesis looks into the mutual interference patterns of Power Line CEBus communication in the presence of X-l0 module signaling and visa versa. The investigation encompasses a series of tests and measurements on a Power Line CEBus-X10 test …

Applications Of A Microtrap For On-Line Monitoring Of Volatile Organics, Chaohua Feng
Dissertations
Microtrap is made by packing a narrow metal tubing with adsorbents. The advantage of a microtrap is that it can be heated and cooled in the order of seconds. It has been used previously as a concentration cum injection device for on-line gas chromatography and also monitoring non-methane organic carbon in air emissions. In this research breakthrough and desorption characteristics of the microtrap were studied. A two-stage microtrap system was developed to reduce breakthrough while making sharp injection for GC separation. Microtrap was also used as a concentrator cum injector in on-line mass spectrometry. Finally, a microtrap based, continuous non-methane …
Development Of Membrane Extraction Systems For Measuring Trace Level Organic Compounds In Water, Xuemei Guo
Development Of Membrane Extraction Systems For Measuring Trace Level Organic Compounds In Water, Xuemei Guo
Dissertations
The presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ground and surface water resources poses a threat to public health. The measurement of these trace level contaminants in water is of significant importance. Conventional methods for analysis of trace volatile organic compounds in water include purge and trap, head space analysis, and solid phase microextraction (SPME). While these are excellent laboratory techniques, none of them can be used for continuous, on-line monitoring of water streams. Membrane separation of organic compounds from water provides an exciting possibility for on-line extraction and analysis. In previous investigations, water continuously flowed on the feed side …
Chemical Reactions And Mass Transport In Emulsion Liquid Membrane, Huifang Fan
Chemical Reactions And Mass Transport In Emulsion Liquid Membrane, Huifang Fan
Dissertations
Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) systems are an important technique for wastewater cleanup. For this purpose, emulsion globules are dispersed in wastewater (external phase), each emulsion globule consisting of many tiny aqueous droplets (internal phase) enclosed in oil (membrane phase). Hazardous chemicals in the wastewater are transported into the internal droplets by mass transfer mechanisms.
Since Li first invented an ELM system in the 1960s, much research effort has been devoted to experimentally finding the optimal conditions for ELM recovery of various chemicals. Such studies would have benefited greatly from the guidance of mathematical models, especially those that provide analytical predictions. …
Long Term Risks Associated With Brownfield Containments, Shailesh Shirish Chirputkar
Long Term Risks Associated With Brownfield Containments, Shailesh Shirish Chirputkar
Dissertations
The sites at which the development is hindered by real or perceived contamination are called as Brownfield sites. It is a common trend in industry to develop these types of sites with surface and peripheral containments. It might prove unwise to develop the sites in this manner from a long term perspective without considering the associated risk. Because of this, a model has been proposed for long term risk assessments of brownfield containments.
Objectives of this study were to develop a contaminant transport model for flow of contaminants towards the surface and peripheral containments inside the site, a model for …

Utilization Of Processed Fly Ash In Mortar, Walairat Bumrongjaroen
Dissertations
Grinding process is introduced to provide fine particles of coal fly ash that enhances the strength gain of cement mortars. It is discovered that grinding can make all the studied fly ashes more suitable for concrete use at higher replacement value than previously anticipated even when the effect of high carbon content is considered.
In this study, new mechanisms for strength gain of fly ash mortars are proposed. They are dispersion and nucleation, which are results from the presence of fly ash in the cement mortar. These effects are shown to enhance the hydration of cement. The pozzolanic action of …
Developing Techniques For Enhancing Comprehensibility Of Controlled Medical Terminologies, Huanying Gu
Developing Techniques For Enhancing Comprehensibility Of Controlled Medical Terminologies, Huanying Gu
Dissertations
A controlled medical terminology (CMT) is a collection of concepts (or terms) that are used in the medical domain. Typically, a CMT also contains attributes of those concepts and/or relationships between those concepts. Electronic CMTs are extremely useful and important for communication between and integration of independent information systems in healthcare, because data in this area is highly fragmented. A single query in this area might involve several databases, e.g., a clinical database, a pharmacy database, a radiology database, and a lab test database.
Unfortunately, the extensive sizes of CMTs, often containing tens of thousands of concepts and hundreds of …
