A Reconciled Estimation Of The State Of Cryospheric Components In The Southern Andes And California Using Geospatial Techniques, Pushkar Inamdar Dec 2017

A Reconciled Estimation Of The State Of Cryospheric Components In The Southern Andes And California Using Geospatial Techniques, Pushkar Inamdar

Theses and Dissertations

Glaciers are the essential source of fresh water not only to human sustenance, but it is also vital for all lifeforms on earth. Glaciers are also key components in understanding rapid changes in climate. This makes understanding of glacier mass, extent, and overall state essential. In this dissertation, the objective was to analyze the state of snow and ice masses in the mid (California) and low latitude (Chile/Argentina) western American regions using geospatial technology. This study also analyzed the effects of anomalies in snow mass on the regional agricultural practices in California’s Central Valley. In the Southern Andes, the digital …

Application Of Coastal And Marine Ecological Classification Standard (Cmecs) To Remotely Operated Vehicle (Rov) Video Data For Enhanced Geospatial Analysis Of Deep Sea Environments, Caitlin A. Ruby May 2017

Application Of Coastal And Marine Ecological Classification Standard (Cmecs) To Remotely Operated Vehicle (Rov) Video Data For Enhanced Geospatial Analysis Of Deep Sea Environments, Caitlin A. Ruby

Theses and Dissertations

The Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) provides a comprehensive framework of common terminology for organizing physical, chemical, biological, and geological information about marine ecosystems. Federally endorsed as a dynamic content standard, all federally funded data must be compliant by 2018; however, applying CMECS to deep sea datasets and underwater video have not been extensively examined. The presented research demonstrates the extent to which CMECS can be applied to deep sea benthic habitats, assesses the feasibility of applying CMECS to remotely operated vehicle (ROV) video data in near-real-time, and establishes best practices for mapping environmental aspects and observed deep …

Gis-Based Evaluation Of Landslide Susceptibility For Eastern Tennessee, Sara Ann Smith May 2017

Gis-Based Evaluation Of Landslide Susceptibility For Eastern Tennessee, Sara Ann Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The Appalachian Mountains in eastern Tennessee are known for landslides, and landslides are reported to cause millions of dollars of damage. To aid in the estimation of future susceptibility, geographic information systems was used to perform a logistic regression, to identify landslides in eastern Tennessee. Landslide model results validated using Kold cross validation. The model results suggest that the environmental variables slope, soil, landcover/vegetation, and distance to roads were significant factors related to landslide susceptibility. The susceptibility map showed that 86.8% of urban areas in eastern Tennessee were at highest susceptibility for landslides, possibly due to lower amounts of landcover. …
