Thou Shall Not Steal: Assessing Demographic And Neighborhood Predictors Of Shoplifting Through The Lens Of Social Disorganization Theory, Christina Loftin

Theses and Dissertations

The crime of shoplifting has received limited scholarly attention despite millions of shoplifting arrests that occur every year. Our understanding of shoplifting is limited because of this. This study assesses whether offenders arrested for shoplifting that reside in socially disorganized neighborhoods differ from their counterparts from less socially disorganized neighborhoods. Using arrest data from the Meridian Police Department and secondary data from the 2018 American Community Survey, analyses revealed that arrestees from neighborhoods with high levels of poverty were more likely to shoplift from dollar stores, liquor stores, and convenience stores. Demographic findings revealed few gender differences in shoplifting among …

Does Yield Risk Differ Across Soil Types? Evidence From Mississippi Variety Trials, Amadeo Fosu Panyi Aug 2020

Does Yield Risk Differ Across Soil Types? Evidence From Mississippi Variety Trials, Amadeo Fosu Panyi

Theses and Dissertations

An extant amount of studies has evaluated the impact of soil crop yield. However, only few studies examined the influence of soil yield variability (higher moments). This research evaluates the impact of soil on yield and examines whether corn yield variability (risk) changes with soil types. The study uses the data from the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station annual corn variety trial from 2000-2018 and the PRISM climate group. The two-step Just-Pope (1978,1979) production function is employed. Pooled, random-effects, and fixed-effects models are estimated by OLS and FGLS for the mean equations. The dependent variables of the variance equations …

The Construction And Use Of An Economic Model For Prospective Forest Products Manufacturing Facilities In Mississippi, John William Griffin May 2020

The Construction And Use Of An Economic Model For Prospective Forest Products Manufacturing Facilities In Mississippi, John William Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, capital investment amounts into Mississippi’s forest products industry have been disproportionate compared with those in neighboring states. Reasons for this have been casually hypothesized, but the topic has not been researched in depth. An economic model has been developed that will aid stakeholders in examining and addressing this issue. The model utilizes county-level data related to southern yellow pine (SYP) lumber manufacturing in tandem with a linear programming solver to produce estimates of annual costs for a SYP sawmill built in any southeastern county. Early results suggest that Mississippi has been an underutilized location for investments in SYP lumber …
