Let’S Talk: The Dual Process Model Of Supportive Communication In Peers, Erica Marie Szkody
Let’S Talk: The Dual Process Model Of Supportive Communication In Peers, Erica Marie Szkody
Theses and Dissertations
Supportive messages occur within most relationships. Researchers have found strong relationships between social support and various physical and psychological health outcomes, but the specific mechanisms at work have yet to be fully explored. Many factors contribute to whether a supportive interaction is processed as helpful or supportive by the recipient including relational factors, message content, past experiences, etc. For peer dyads, the context and supportive messages individuals provide their peer may inhibit or contribute to their perception of their peer’s supportive behavior. The current study examined the impact of contextual factors (such as family communication patterns and relationship quality) on …
An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of The Lived Experience Of Parental Caregivers For Children With Severe Epidermolysis Bullosa, Michael J. Valentine
An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of The Lived Experience Of Parental Caregivers For Children With Severe Epidermolysis Bullosa, Michael J. Valentine
Theses and Dissertations
Providing care to child with a chronic, rare diseases has been identified as a major life stressor with a myriad of negative physical and mental health consequences. These stresses have previously been found to create burden that may impair caregiving efforts and increase the risk of mortality for both the caregiver and affected child. Many rare diseases affect children. It is not known how caregiver burden and the source of stress varies by disease. Qualitative methods have been used to understand caregiver experience with the rare disease, epidermolysis bullosa (EB), but no such studies have occurred in the United States. …
Probing Site-Specific Twin Nucleation In Hexagonal Close Packed (Hcp) Materials With Nudged Elastic Band (Neb) Method, Deepesh Giri
Probing Site-Specific Twin Nucleation In Hexagonal Close Packed (Hcp) Materials With Nudged Elastic Band (Neb) Method, Deepesh Giri
Theses and Dissertations
Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Molecular Statics (MS) simulations have always proven to be powerful tools to study material behavior at the lowest length scale. However, one of the greatest challenges in material modelling is the effective upscaling of relevant material properties from atomic scale to continuum scale. One such challenge is how best to capture the role of twinning in higher scale plasticity. Capturing twin nucleation in fullield crystal plasticity is a long-standing problem in materials science. The challenge resides mainly in the biased regional lattice transformation associated with twin formation in defiance of its obedience to a threshold stress …
Effects Of Reed Sedge Peat On Lambs At Weaning With Regard To Stress And Apparent Nutrient Digestibility, Rhianwedd O. Price
Effects Of Reed Sedge Peat On Lambs At Weaning With Regard To Stress And Apparent Nutrient Digestibility, Rhianwedd O. Price
Theses and Dissertations
For this study 14 lambs were obtained, which were split into two groups; a control group (CON) and a group that was supplemented Reed Sedge Peat (RSP). We wanted to test whether RSP could decrease stress at weaning, increase immune response and also increase digestibility of the animal. Lambs were subjected to an ACTH challenge 48 hours post weaning. After weaning (d 28 of study) 10 of the lambs (5 CON; 5 RSP) also underwent a digestibility challenge. We found that there was no difference (P = 0.8764) within cortisol concentration during the weaning portion of the study between the …
The Effects Of Diet, Population, And Water Temperature On The Stress Response Of Angled Largemouth Bass Micropterus Salmoides, Colin P. Dinken
The Effects Of Diet, Population, And Water Temperature On The Stress Response Of Angled Largemouth Bass Micropterus Salmoides, Colin P. Dinken
Theses and Dissertations
Angling practices subject Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides to multiple stressors, causing homeostatic physiological disturbances. The combined effects of ambient and live well temperature on stress responses from exercise have not been thoroughly examined. Large numbers of fish required for stress experiments can be produced by intensive culture, but hatchery fish may differ physiologically from wild fish due to dietary carbohydrates. Therefore, the effects of diet, population, and temperature on stress response and health were examined. Stress responses were similar among fish fed formulated and live diets and liver health improved within 4-6 weeks. Although cortisol responses of hatchery and wild …
A New Perspective On Giving-Up Density Experiments And The Landscape Of Fear, Jordan D. Mcmahon
A New Perspective On Giving-Up Density Experiments And The Landscape Of Fear, Jordan D. Mcmahon
Theses and Dissertations
Non-consumptive effects that predators have on prey are important to ecosystems. The perceived risk of predation can alter feeding behavior. Giving-up density (GUD) experiments have been a foundational method to evaluate perceived predation risk, but rely on the assumption that food preferences are absolute. However, nutritional preferences are context dependent and can change with risk. In my first chapter, I used spiders and grasshoppers to test the hypothesis that covariance in nutritional preferences and risk may confound the interpretation of GUD experiments. My results demonstrate that predation risk and nutritional preferences covary and can confound interpretation of GUD experiments. In …
An Application Of Roger Ulrich's Methods: Designing A Healing Garden For African American Women Living In Low-Income Public Housing, Juriel Annishia Rogers
An Application Of Roger Ulrich's Methods: Designing A Healing Garden For African American Women Living In Low-Income Public Housing, Juriel Annishia Rogers
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this preference study is to identify the effects that the presence of a healing garden may have, on the perceived stress of African American women living in in low-income public housing. Literature states that women who live in public housing experience higher rates of malnutrition, fatigue, susceptibility to infection, and premature death (Adler et al., 1994; Whelch and Kneipp, 2005). Few of these studies address healing gardens as solutions. The explanation of behavior while visiting a healing garden in this study will help to identify particular aspects of gardens that are perceived as therapeutic. This research compared …
Finite Element Study On The Influence Of Bone-Implant Interface Condition On Femoral Fracture After Cementless Total Hip Replacement, Caleb Onuh Yenusah
Finite Element Study On The Influence Of Bone-Implant Interface Condition On Femoral Fracture After Cementless Total Hip Replacement, Caleb Onuh Yenusah
Theses and Dissertations
Finite element analysis was performed on an implanted femur, using loads of daily living activities, performed by total hip replacement patients. A probabilistic bone fatigue failure model was utilized to analysis the risk of post-operative femoral fracture in different patient groups, depending on bone fatigue strength for young and elderly patients, and activity levels for normal and active patients. Different bone-implant interface conditions were considered: after surgery, osseointegrated, fibrous tissue covering, and loose. For young patients, the probability of failure is less than 4% for all cases. While in elderly patients, high of 28.2% and 57.9% are reported for normal …
Emotion Regulation As A Moderator Between Coping And Perceived Stress With Middle School Students In Rural Areas, Jabari Markeon Sellers
Emotion Regulation As A Moderator Between Coping And Perceived Stress With Middle School Students In Rural Areas, Jabari Markeon Sellers
Theses and Dissertations
As students mature the types and frequency of stressors increase with age. Notably, middle school can be a stressful transition period that includes new peer relationships and hormonal changes, along with an increased probability of experiencing bullying and suicide ideation. Stress has been shown to have negative effects in psychological and physiological functioning among adolescents (Brietzke et al., 2012; De Young, Kenardy, & Cobham, 2011; Green et al., 2010). Effective coping skills can help to buffer these issues, giving adolescents a repertoire of tools to use. Along with that, proper emotional regulation has been shown decrease the negative effects of …
The Effects Of Stress On Physiology And Meat Quality In Cultured Channel Catfish, Mike Ciaramella
The Effects Of Stress On Physiology And Meat Quality In Cultured Channel Catfish, Mike Ciaramella
Theses and Dissertations
Stress during fish culture can impact growth, physiology and fillet quality. Maintenance of high quality seafood is important to ensure the production of a highly marketable product. The present study assessed how sequential stressors affect the physical, physiological, sensory and quality characteristics of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) fillets. Temperature (25°C or 33°C) and dissolved oxygen (DO, ~2 mg/L or >5 mg/L) were maintained for four weeks, followed by socking and transport stress for a total of 12 treatments. After each stage of stress (environment, socking and transport), physical (length, weight and feed consumption), physiological (hematocrit, plasma cortisol, pH, glucose, lactate, …
Effect Of Carbohydrate Supplement On Cardiovascular And Metabolic Responses To Dual Concurrent Stressors, Matthew John Mcallister
Effect Of Carbohydrate Supplement On Cardiovascular And Metabolic Responses To Dual Concurrent Stressors, Matthew John Mcallister
Theses and Dissertations
Chronic psychological and physiological stress is linked to a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Potentially dangerous cardiovascular responses (e.g., exacerbated cortisol production) can occur with high levels of stress and chronic hypercortisolemia is associated with CVD. The ingestion of carbohydrate (CHO) prior to physical stress may attenuate cortisol responses to stress. The purpose of this project was to investigate the potential effect of CHO ingestion on cortisol production and responses to concurrent stress challenges. Sixteen apparently healthy non-smoking men 21-30 years old participated in a randomized, cross-over, double blind, placebo controlled trial. Participants were tested on four separate sessions. …
Stress Responses And Attachment Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Food, Dongryeoul Bae
Stress Responses And Attachment Of Listeria Monocytogenes In Food, Dongryeoul Bae
Theses and Dissertations
The rates of the US hospitalization and mortality caused by Listeria monocytogenes was estimated to be the highest of 31 food-borne pathogens including Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, and Clostridium. This pathogen has an ability to survive under extreme conditions widely found in the natural environment and food. Among 13 serovars L. monocytogenes serovar 4b, 1/2a and 1/2b are mainly associated with human listeriosis outbreaks. The deadliest outbreaks of human listeriosis and massive product recalls in multi-states were associated with ready-to-eat (RTE) food products such as mexican-style cheese, turkey deli meat, cabbage, and cantaloupes contaminated with the bacterium. Thus, contamination of …
Bovine Respiratory Disease: Understanding How Stress Modulates Immune And Growth Parameters When Cattle Are Challenged With Respiratory Pathogens (Viral And Bacterial), Shollie Falkenberg
Bovine Respiratory Disease: Understanding How Stress Modulates Immune And Growth Parameters When Cattle Are Challenged With Respiratory Pathogens (Viral And Bacterial), Shollie Falkenberg
Theses and Dissertations
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex is a multiactorial disease syndrome that results from various individual contributions and interactions of pathogen, host, and environmental/management factors. Despite the efforts in research, prevention and treatment, BRD remains a leading cause of economic loss in the cattle industry. While advances in therapeutics and new vaccines have been developed over the past 20 – 25 years, the incidence of respiratory disease does not appear to be on the decline, rather it is appears to be increasing. While bacterial and viral pathogens, and various stressors associated with BRD have been characterized, there are no animal models …
A Phenomenological Model For Dynamic Recrystallization, Jason Mark Simmons
A Phenomenological Model For Dynamic Recrystallization, Jason Mark Simmons
Theses and Dissertations
The present study develops a phenomenological adaptation to an internal state variable (ISV) model that incorporates the influence of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in a material’s evolving microstructure and flow stress response. During metal forming and joining processes that promote internal heat distributions and large strains, microstructural processes often occur that result in a transformation of the evolving microstructure away from the base distribution. In an effort to lower the stored energy accumulated in the material’s lattice and grain structure, the deformed material may undergo a type of dynamic recovery process, such as DRX. In this study, the ISV model’s flow …
Morphological And Physiological Changes In Laying Hens In Various Stages Of Non-Feed Withdrawal Molt, Ann Laster Mcdonald
Morphological And Physiological Changes In Laying Hens In Various Stages Of Non-Feed Withdrawal Molt, Ann Laster Mcdonald
Theses and Dissertations
Molting is a natural occurrence in the Avian species that can include a period of fasting. Animal rights groups view the longepted standard industry practice as inhumane. Based on influences from these groups and the recommendation of its scientific committee, United Egg Producers (UEP) requires members of its Animal Care Certified Program use a noneed withdrawal molting program, even though the morphological and physiological effects of this method have not been studied in depth and the existing literature provides contradictory results. Research regarding how to induce a noneed withdrawal molt has been performed using feed that is nutrient deficient or …
The Relationship Of Diet, Stress, Intestinal Nitric Oxide Production, And Intestinal Microflora In Chickens, Monticha Putsakum
The Relationship Of Diet, Stress, Intestinal Nitric Oxide Production, And Intestinal Microflora In Chickens, Monticha Putsakum
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this study were first, to investigate the effect of stress and ascorbic acid (AA) supplement during stress on intestinal microflora of broilers and layers, and secondly, to determine nitric oxide (NO) production in intestinal tract of broilers during stress, when supplemented with L-arginine, and NO production in cecal bacteria. The intestinal microflora from broilers and layers were analyzed for bacterial populations during stress and when supplemented with ascorbic acid. In both studies, stress response was induced by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) via a mini osmotic pump for 7 days, and intestinal samples were collected before and after stress …
