Characterization Of Fatty Acid Composition Of Bull Sperm With Varied Cryotolerance, Holly Evans Dec 2019

Characterization Of Fatty Acid Composition Of Bull Sperm With Varied Cryotolerance, Holly Evans

Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this study were to determine fatty acid composition and acrosome status from bull sperm with different freezabilities (n = 12). We hypothesized that lipid fractions had differentiated fatty acid compositions and such differences influence sperm freezability and the sperm acrosome. Fatty acids were extracted from fresh frozen sperm and fractionated by solid-phase extraction. Thirtyour fatty acids were quantified. Saturated fatty acids were predominant, accounting for 71 to 80% of fatty acids in both fractions. Differences in composition between fractions existed (P < 0.001). Branched chain fatty acid concentrations (15 to 18 µg) were almost twice that of polyunsaturated fatty acid concentrations found in the polar fractions (8 to 9 µg; P < 0.001). Sperm with differentiated freezabilities had few differences in 22:0, 18:1 cis 9, and 14:0 13-methyl fatty acids (P ≤ 0.011). Analyses of acrosome status of sperm revealed that acrosomes were affected differently among bulls.

This study compares two experiential learning programs’ influence on the ethnocultural empathy development among college students at Mississippi College, a private, religious-affiliated university to explore how this empathy increases community service. 38 students were asked to complete the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy (Wang et al. 2003) and were interviewed about their …

Understanding Large Strain Deformation Behavior Of Physically Assembled Triblock [Aba] Copolymer Gels In B-Selective Solvents, Satish Mishra Dec 2019

Understanding Large Strain Deformation Behavior Of Physically Assembled Triblock [Aba] Copolymer Gels In B-Selective Solvents, Satish Mishra

Theses and Dissertations

Physically assembled gels are widely applicable in the food industry, biomedical devices, drug delivery, and soft robotics due to their tunable mechanical properties and thermoreversibility. The mechanical responses of these gels originate from their microstructure. Therefore, factors affecting the gel microstructure like polymer molecular weight, solvent quality, and polymer concentration play a significant role in determining their mechanical behavior. Gel microstructure also changes during the deformations resulting in a deviation from the structure-property relationship established for the low deformations. During large deformations, other factors like stress relaxation, poroelasticity, and polymer chain entanglement contribute significantly to the gel response. This complexity …

The Effects Of Impure Water Sources On The Early-Age Properties Of Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cements, Wendy Long Dec 2019

The Effects Of Impure Water Sources On The Early-Age Properties Of Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cements, Wendy Long

Theses and Dissertations

One of the benefits of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cements is that these materials gain strength rapidly, where strength development is often measured in hours instead of days. This property makes these materials desirable for use in temporary, non-reinforced repairs of roadways, airfields, and navigable locks. The rapid repair of these infrastructure elements is critical to transporting supplies into regions devastated by disaster. In these austere environments, potable water may not be available in sufficient quantities to make vital repairs, and the use of impure water in the production of CSA cement-based concrete would be advantageous. However, the hydration products formed …

Enhanced Controllers For Voltage-Sourced Converters Interfaced With Weak Ac Power Grids, Sushil Silwal Dec 2019

Enhanced Controllers For Voltage-Sourced Converters Interfaced With Weak Ac Power Grids, Sushil Silwal

Theses and Dissertations

Many distributed energy resource (DER) systems are remotely located and are often interfaced at low or medium voltage levels through power electronics converters such as voltage-sourced converters (VSC). Therefore, a weak-grid situation is encountered where the voltage and frequency at the point of DER coupling can experience fluctuations. A power converter designed to operate in normal and strong grid conditions may not perform satisfactorily during such weak and distorted grid conditions. Hence, considering the full dynamics of the system during weak-grid conditions in the design of converter control is indispensable to ensure the stability of the DER and the grid. …

Family Firm Selection: A Relational Perspective, William Elliot Tabor Dec 2019

Family Firm Selection: A Relational Perspective, William Elliot Tabor

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the hiring of nonfamily employees in family firms. Research to date has emphasized the challenges family firms confront in attracting and selecting quality nonfamily human capital. This literature has emphasized the limitations these firms face due to the information asymmetries common to the hiring process. However, this research has not considered the advantages available to family firms through their social network. Drawing on agency theory, I hypothesize that owner referral utilization mediates the relationship between family essence and firm performance because their use lessens the agency conflicts between owners and nonfamily members. Utilizing a sample of …

Tcb Minimizing Model Of Computation (Tmmc), Naila Bushra Dec 2019

Tcb Minimizing Model Of Computation (Tmmc), Naila Bushra

Theses and Dissertations

The integrity of information systems is predicated on the integrity of processes that manipulate data. Processes are conventionally executed using the conventional von Neumann (VN) architecture. The VN computation model is plagued by a large trusted computing base (TCB), due to the need to include memory and input/output devices inside the TCB. This situation is becoming increasingly unjustifiable due to the steady addition of complex features such as platform virtualization, hyper-threading, etc. In this research work, we propose a new model of computation - TCB minimizing model of computation (TMMC) - which explicitly seeks to minimize the TCB, viz., hardware …
