Paying It Forward: Who Does This?, Elizabeth C. Alexander, Charles Braun
Paying It Forward: Who Does This?, Elizabeth C. Alexander, Charles Braun
Faculty Research Day
Paying it forward experiences sometimes make the news when an exceptionally long line of drive through customers decide to utilize upstream reciprocity, aka Pay It Forward (PIF), as in an example from December of 2012 at the Tim Horton’s in Winnipeg when 226 customers each individually paid for the order of the customer behind them in line (Tsvetkova and Macy 2014). But in most cases, the experience involves far fewer customers and is much less newsworthy. Nevertheless, paying it forward is a phenomenon that warrants investigating to understand the moti vations and attributes that contribute to the activity, possibly to …
Conditional Cash Transfer And Girl Child Survival In India, Nabaneeta Biswas
Conditional Cash Transfer And Girl Child Survival In India, Nabaneeta Biswas
Faculty Research Day
This paper examines the impact of a conditional cash transfer (CCT) program on girls’ early childhood survival in India. With a view to improve sex ratios and alleviate the status of girls, the Government of India launched the Dhan Lakshmi financial incentive scheme in 2008 in select districts of seven states. The program offers financial benefits to parents for raising daughters. Using district-level data from a large household survey, we analyze the program’s effect on sex ratios in the state of Punjab, which reports one of the most skewed sex ratios in the country. Results indicate a positive impact of …

Perceptions Of Specialties And Primary Care Careers: Findings From West Virginia Medical Student And Resident Focus Groups, April L. Vestal, Laura Boone, Robert Walker, A. Brianna Sheppard, Dakota Morris, Ashley J. Noland
Marshall Journal of Medicine
The purpose of this study was to improve the understanding of how perceptions of practicing specific medical specialties contribute to career decisions. Participants included medical students and residents from training programs in West Virginia. Focus groups were conducted between September 2013 and February 2015. Thematic content analysis of focus group interviews was used to identify phrases indicating perceptions of person- versus technique-oriented personality medical specialties.
“Self-focused” and “other-focused” themes emerged within person-oriented comments. Factors affecting “self”, including work/life balance and salary and practice environment, made certain specialties more appealing. Technique-oriented comments included working in a hospital setting, performing technical procedures, …

Transitioning From The Level Surface To Stairs In Children With And Without Down Syndrome: Motor Strategy And Anticipatory Locomotor Adjustments, Huaqing Liang, Xiang Ke, Jianhua Wu
Physical Therapy Faculty Research
Background: Children with Down syndrome (DS) show underdeveloped motor strategy and anticipatory locomotor adjustments (ALA) before crossing an obstacle. Stairs presents another important setting to study environment navigation and motor adaptation. Inclusion of external ankle load is often used to perturb the stability of a system and observe the emergence of new patterns.
Research question: How do stair height and external ankle load affect motor strategy and ALA in 5-to-11-year-old children with typical development (TD) and with DS when approaching the stairs?
Methods: Fourteen children with DS and 14 age- and sex-matched children with TD participated in the study. They …

Mikhail Bakhtin’S Heritage In Literature, Arts, And Psychology. Introduction, Slav N. Gratchev, Howard Mancing
Modern Languages Faculty Research
This volume celebrates hundred years of Bakhtin’s heritage: in September 13 of 1919 in the literary journal Den Iskusstva (The Day of the Art) was published the first work of Mikhail Bakhtin, Art and Answerability, the work that became his literary manifesto.
This book aims to examine the heritage of Mikhail Bakhtin in a variety of disciplines. To achieve this end, we drew upon colleagues from eight different countries across the world--United States, Canada, Spain, Great Britain, France, Russia, Chile, and Japan--in order to bring the widest variety of points of view on the subject. But we also wanted …

Surgery
Chronic liver disease has globally risen mainly due to a prevalent Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection rate and an epidemic of obesity. It is estimated by the year 2030, 2.2 billion people around the world will be overweight and 1.1 billion people will be obese. Diabetes and obesity are the main risk factors for the development of the metabolic syndrome and in the liver of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) which could progress to NASH related cirrhosis and liver malignancy. At present there is not effective therapy for NASH besides loss of weight and exercise. Furthermore, optimal management of HCC …

Attitudinal, Normative, And Resource Factors Affecting Psychologists’ Intentions To Adopt An Open Data Badge: An Empirical Analysis, Lindsey M. Harper, Youngseek Kim
Librarian Research
The purpose of this research is to investigate the attitudinal, normative, and resource factors affecting psychologists’ adoption of an open data badge. The theory of planned behavior was employed to demonstrate how these factors influence behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge. This research used a survey method to examine to what extent those attitudinal, normative, resource factors influence psychologists’ behavioral intentions to adopt an open data badge, and therefore engage in data sharing behaviors. A national survey (n = 341) across the field of psychology showed that perceived benefit and perceived risk had significant positive and negative relationships …

Rural Medical Student Opinions About Rural Practice: Does Choice Of College Make A Difference?, William J. Crump, Craig H. Ziegler, R. Steve Fricker
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Purpose
While many programs assume medical students who attended rural colleges are more likely to practice in smaller towns later, there are few studies to support this assumption. This study examines aspects of medical students’ opinions about rural living and rural practice based on where they attended college.
Method
Students with rural upbringing were identified and administered a previously published rural health opinion survey. The opinion survey was administered across three academic years, from 2015 to 2017, and included a total of three scales and nine subscales for analysis. Factor analysis was used to identify the nine subscales.

Knowledge And Risk Factors For Stroke Among Undergraduates In Southwestern Nigeria, Wasiu Olalekan Adebimpe
Knowledge And Risk Factors For Stroke Among Undergraduates In Southwestern Nigeria, Wasiu Olalekan Adebimpe
Marshall Journal of Medicine
The burden of non-communicable diseases due to stroke is increasing. Despite this, community based studies that could stimulate stroke primordial prevention among the population at risk are sparse. This study assessed community knowledge and risk factors to stroke among University undergraduates in Osogbo, southwestern Nigeria. A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among 420 male undergraduates selected through multi-stage sampling method. Research instruments were self-administered semi structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed using the SPSS software version 17.0. Four hundred and seven (96.9%) have heard about stroke. Good mean knowledge score of causes, symptoms, warning signs and risk factors of stroke …
