Heuristic Solutions For Loading In Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Bharatendu Srivastava, Wun-Hwa Chen
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Production planning in flexible manufacturing system deals with the efficient organization of the production resources in order to meet a given production schedule. It is a complex problem and typically leads to several hierarchical subproblems that need to be solved sequentially or simultaneously. Loading is one of the planning subproblems that has to addressed. It involves assigning the necessary operations and tools among the various machines in some optimal fashion to achieve the production of all selected part types. In this paper, we first formulate the loading problem as a 0-1 mixed integer program and then propose heuristic procedures based …

A Highly Sensitive Plant Hybrid Protein Assay System Based On The Spm Promoter And Tnpa Protein For Detection And Analysis Of Transcription Activation Domains, Michael Schläppi, Ramesh Raina, Nina V. Fedoroff
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
TnpA is a multifunctional DNA binding protein encoded by the maize Suppressor-mutator (Spm) transposable element. TnpA is required for transposition and is a repressor of the unmethylated Spm promoter. While analyzing protein domains using a yeast GAL4-based hybrid system in transiently transformed tobacco cells, we found that TnpA represses the >10-fold transcriptional activation observed when the GAL4 DNA-binding domain is used alone. By contrast, compared to the backgroundless TnpA DNA-binding domain alone, 33- to 45-fold activation of the Spm promoter was observed when the VP16 activation domain was fused to it. TnpA-binding sites, but no TATA box, …

A Comparison Of The Ovulation Method With The Cue Ovulation Predictor In Determining The Fertile Period, Richard Fehring
A Comparison Of The Ovulation Method With The Cue Ovulation Predictor In Determining The Fertile Period, Richard Fehring
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this study was to compare the CUE Ovulation Predictor with the ovulation method in determining the fertile period. Eleven regularly ovulating women measured their salivary and vaginal electrical resistance (ER) with the CUE, observed their cervical-vaginal mucus, and measured their urine for a luteinizing hormone (LH) surge on a daily basis. Data from 21 menstrual cycles showed no statistical difference (T= 0.33, p= 0.63) between the CUE fertile period, which ranged from 5 to 10 days (mean = 6.7 days, SD = 1.6), and the fertile period of the ovulation method, which ranged from 4 to 9 …
The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral: Development In An Anglican Approach To Christian Unity, Robert B. Slocum
The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral: Development In An Anglican Approach To Christian Unity, Robert B. Slocum
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
The Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral has served as the primary reference point and working document of the Anglican Communion for ecumenical Christian reunion. It identifies four essential elements for Christian unity in terms of scriptures, creeds, sacraments, and the Historic Episcopate. The Quadrilateral is based on the ecumenical thought and leadership of William Reed Huntington, an Episcopal priest who proposed the Quadrilateral in his book The Church.Idea:/In Essay toward Unity (1870) and who was the moving force behind approval of the Quadrilateral by the House of Bishops of the 1886 General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church. It was subsequently approved with …
Childhood Memory And A History Of Different Forms Of Abuse, Timothy Melchert
Childhood Memory And A History Of Different Forms Of Abuse, Timothy Melchert
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
A widespread professional and public controversy has recently emerged regarding recovered memories of child sexual abuse, but the prevalence and nature of these memories have received limited empirical examination. This study (N = 553 nonclinical participants) found that very similar proportions of those with histories of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse reported that they had periods without memory of their abuse (21%, 18%, and 18%, respectively). The responses of approximately one half of these participants suggested that they lacked conscious access to their abuse memories, whereas the responses from the others suggested that they had conscious access to their …

Identification And Characterization Of The Thrombin Binding Sites On Fibrin, David A. Meh, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson
Identification And Characterization Of The Thrombin Binding Sites On Fibrin, David A. Meh, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Thrombin binds to fibrin at two classes of non-substrate sites, one of high affinity and the other of low affinity. We investigated the location of these thrombin binding sites by assessing the binding of thrombin to fibrin lacking or containing γ′ chains, which are fibrinogen γ chain variants that contain a highly anionic carboxyl-terminal sequence. We found the high affinity thrombin binding site to be located exclusively in D domains on γ′ chains (Ka, 4.9 × 106−1; n, 1.05 per γ′ chain), whereas the low affinity thrombin binding site was in the fibrin E …

Plasma Factor Xiii Binds Specifically To Fibrinogen Molecules Containing Γ‘ Chains, Kevin R. Siebenlist, David A. Meh, Michael W. Mosesson
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The difference between peak 1 and peak 2 fibrinogen lies in their γ chains. Peak 1 molecules contain 2 γA chains; peak 2 molecules contain 1 γA and 1 γ‘ chain, the latter of which contains a 20 amino acid extension (γ‘ 408−427) replacing the carboxyl-terminal 4 amino acids of the γA chain (γA 408−411). While the existence of γ‘ chains in plasma fibrinogen molecules has been known for many years, their function remains unknown. When fibrinogen is purified from plasma, the factor XIII zymogen (A2B2) copurifies with it and is found only in the peak …

The media must expand their pedagogical role beyond natural and technological disasters and begin providing basic airplane safety behavior information.
Relationships Of Job And Family Involvement, Family Social Support, And Work–Family Conflict With Job And Life Satisfaction, Gary A. Adams, Lynda A. King, Daniel W. King
Relationships Of Job And Family Involvement, Family Social Support, And Work–Family Conflict With Job And Life Satisfaction, Gary A. Adams, Lynda A. King, Daniel W. King
Management Faculty Research and Publications
A model of the relationship between work and family that incorporates variables from both the work-family conflict and social support literatures was developed and empirically tested. This model related bidirectional work-family conflict, family instrumental and emotional social support, and job and family involvement to job and life satisfaction. Data came from 163 workers who were living with at least 1 family member. Results suggested that relationships between work and family can have an important effect on job and life satisfaction and that the level of involvement the worker assigns to work and family roles is associated with this relationship. The …
Reserve Requirements, Currency Substitution, And Seigniorage In The Transition To European Monetary Union, Joseph Daniels, David Van Hoose
Reserve Requirements, Currency Substitution, And Seigniorage In The Transition To European Monetary Union, Joseph Daniels, David Van Hoose
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This article considers a transition toward European monetary union that combines increased substitution of currencies and greater monetary, financial, and fiscal policy coordination. It explores how such a transition would affect national inflation and interest rates and required reserve ratios when governments depend in part on seigniorage funding for public expenditures. We find that greater coordination of policies would lead to lower inflation and interest rates but higher reserve-requirement ratios. Because higher reserve-requirement ratios could place European banks at a competitive disadvantage, we conclude that the interaction between reserve requirements and seigniorage concerns makes it less likely that the gradualist …
Parametric Analysis Using The Finite Element Method To Investigate Prosthetic Interface Stresses For Persons With Trans-Tibial Amputation, Barbara Silver-Thorn, Dudley S. Childress
Parametric Analysis Using The Finite Element Method To Investigate Prosthetic Interface Stresses For Persons With Trans-Tibial Amputation, Barbara Silver-Thorn, Dudley S. Childress
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A finite element (FE) model of the below-knee residual limb and prosthetic socket was created to investigate the effects of parameter variations on the interface stress distribution during static stance. This model was based upon geometric approximations of anthropometric residual limb geometry. The model was not specific to an individual with amputation, but could be scaled to approximate the limb of a particular subject. Parametric analyses were conducted to investigate the effects of prosthetic socket design and residual limb geometry on the residual limb/prosthetic socket interface stresses. Behavioral trends were illustrated via sensitivity analysis.
The results of the parametric analyses …
Determinants Of Economic Development Incentives Offered By States: A Test Of The Arms Race Hypothesis, Mark A. Jenn, Farrokh Nourzad
Determinants Of Economic Development Incentives Offered By States: A Test Of The Arms Race Hypothesis, Mark A. Jenn, Farrokh Nourzad
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This paper tests the "arms race" hypothesis, which postulates that states tend to increase their incentive offerings to new firms if such incentive programs are in use in other states that are perceived to be direct competitors. Using a pooled time-series/cross-section sample of twelve states covering the period from 1969 through 1985 and a model that controls for the effects of various economic and political factors, we find strong support for the "arms race" hypothesis. This result is robust to the alternative specifications of the incentive offerings and different measures of the degree of competition among states.

Testing Models Of Counselor Development With A Measure Of Counseling Self-Efficacy, Timothy Melchert, Victoria L. Hays, Lynn M. Wiljanen, Ann K. Kolocek
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Models of counselor development have become very popular, but empirical research has found differences primarily between beginning graduate students and doctoral interns, in the research described here, a counseling self-efficacy instrument was developed and was used to test hypotheses based on self-efficacy theory and models of counselor development, both of which would make similar predictions about increases in counseling self-efficacy resulting from clinical training and experience. The findings include strong reliability and validity evidence for the instrument and several significantly different groups of participants that correspond roughly to the groups hypothesized in stage models of counselor development.

Over the last decade, numerous experimental and numerical analyses have been conducted to investigate the stress distribution between the residual limb and prosthetic socket of persons with lower limb amputation. The objectives of these analyses have been to improve our understanding of the residual limb/prosthetic socket system, to evaluate the influence of prosthetic design parameters and alignment variations on the interface stress distribution, and to evaluate prosthetic fit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize these experimental investigations and identify associated limitations. In addition, this paper presents an overview of various computer models used to investigate the residual limb …

The Impact Of Personal And Location Characteristics Upon Elderly Interstate Migration, David E. Clark, Thomas A. Knapp, Nancy E. White
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of locational and individual characteristics upon interstate retiree migration, particularly in state-level public policy variables. Data regarding the characteristics of individual movers are drawn from the 1990 US. Census of Population and Housing 5% Public Use Microdata Sample. The household data are merged with location-specific attributes including both natural amenities and local fiscal variables. Three specifications of the model are estimated. The “push” model analyzes the impact of origin characteristics upon migration between states, while the “pull” model demonstrates the influence of destination characteristics upon interstate migration. The final specification …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this study was to determine the transformation temperatures for the austenitic, martensitic, and rhombohedral (R) structure phases in representative as-received commercial nitinol (NiTi) orthodontic wire alloys, to reconcile discrepancies among recent publications. Specimens were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) over a temperature range from approximately −170° C to 100° C, with a scanning rate of 10° C per minute. Two different pathways, with the intermediate R structure either absent or present, were observed for the transformation from martensitic to austenitic NiTi, whereas the reverse transformation from austenitic to martensitic NiTi always included the R structure. The …

Explication Of The Construct Of Shared Care And The Prevention Of Pressure Ulcers In Home Health Care, Margaret Sebern
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this investigation was to render a more complete understanding of subjective perceptions of pressure ulcers from the perspective of family dyads, and to study the effect of these subjective experiences on preventive behaviors and pressure ulcer outcomes. A naturalistic inquiry, combined with objective measures, was used. Twenty-one dyads participated in four in-depth interviews to explore how they mentally represented and responded to the risk of pressure ulcers. Through the process of concept development, a lay representation of pressure ulcers was developed. This process produced a new concept, identified as “shared care,” that explained how the dyads interaction …

Cross-linking of fibrinogen at its COOH-terminal gamma chain cross-linking site occurs in the presence of factor XIIIa due to self-association at a constitutive D domain site ("gammaXL"). We investigated the contribution of COOH-terminal regions of fibrinogen Aalpha chains to the gammaXL site by comparing the gamma chain cross-linking rate of intact fibrinogen (fraction I-2) with that of plasma fraction I-9, plasmic fraction I-9D, and plasmic fragment D1, which lack COOH-terminal Aalpha chain regions comprising approximately 100, approximately 390, and 413 residues, respectively. The cross-linking rates were I-2 > I-9 > 1-9D = D1, and indicated that the terminal 100 or more Aalpha …

Exploring The Boundaries Of Pediatric Practice: Nurse Stories Related To Relationships, Joan P. Totka
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Pediatric nurses struggle to find the right level of involvement with children and families. The purpose of this study was to illuminate nurses' struggles and insights as they learned to find the interpersonal boundaries of their own practice. The phenomenological method of Heideggerian hermeneutics was used to analyze data from audiotaped and transcribed single interviews of five pediatric nurses. The analysis of the transcriptions involved multiple stages of interpretation using a research team. The themes that emerged from the data were: (a) pediatric nurse as family caregiver: (b) finding the right level of care: over-involvement vs. crossing the line; (c) …

Evidence For Intramolecular Cross-Linked Aα·Γ Chain Heterodimers In Plasma Fibrinogen, Kevin R. Siebenlist, Michael W. Mosesson
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
A peptide band of ∼105 kDa migrating near the γ dimer position of disulfide bond reduced human plasma fibrinogen prepared from fresh single donor or outdated plasma was identified by SDS−PAGE. The band, amounting to ∼2% of the total Aα/γ chain population, was thrombin and plasmin sensitive and reacted with antibodies to Aα or γ chains but not with antibodies to Bβ chains, plasminogen, or factor XIII. Amino acid sequencing revealed a double sequence corresponding to that of Aα and γ chains, indicating that the band consists of covalently cross-linked Aα·γ chain heterodimers. Aα·γ heterodimers were identified as a component …

Spenser And The Historical Revolution: Briton Moniments And The Problem Of Roman Britain, John E. Curran Jr.
English Faculty Research and Publications
Curran argues that, since Roman Britain is a key to understanding the historiographical debates of Edmund Spenser's time, the Roman Britain section of Briton Moniments in "The Faerie Queene" needs to be examined. It is here that Spenser acknowledged the direction historiography was taking, and saw how this new trend altered the relation between history and glory.
