Shangri-La: From Utopia To Wasteland?, Bo Li Dec 2016

Shangri-La: From Utopia To Wasteland?, Bo Li

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The rapid urbanization movement in China’s uplands and up-streams, home to ethnic groups, are problematic for ecological and cultural reasons. Shangri-La County in southwest China is one such destination that has experienced such environmental and sociocultural challenges. The scale and speed of urbanization that has occurred in Shangri-La has outpaced what local communities can adapt to. As a consequence, a significant regional wetland as well as a culturally important water burial site are in serious distress.

Chokho Pani: An Interface Between Religion And Environment In Darjeeling, Mahendra P. Lama, Roshan P. Rai Mr. Dec 2016

Chokho Pani: An Interface Between Religion And Environment In Darjeeling, Mahendra P. Lama, Roshan P. Rai Mr.

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This case study examines the relationship between everyday religion and resource management in the context of water resources in Darjeeling, India. It uses the notion and practice of chokho pani (pure and/or sacred water) as an interface between popular religious practices and the attempt to conserve water in Darjeeling township. Although the link between religion and environmental resource management is widely recognized, it remains a critical area of inquiry in the Himalaya. The complexity of water's social importance is vividly evident in Darjeeling. The town presents a rapidly urbanizing landscape with a diversity of peoples dependent upon a variety of …

Water Connection: Everyday Religion And Environments In Kathmandu Valley, Mukta S. Tamang Dec 2016

Water Connection: Everyday Religion And Environments In Kathmandu Valley, Mukta S. Tamang

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This case study aims to explore the relationship between ‘everyday religion’ and prospects for urban sustainability in the context of on-going changes -in Kathmandu. It argues that everyday religion plays a role in furnishing the incentive for urban residents to sustainably manage ‘culturalized nature’ in the city. In particular, I examine water, the practices surrounding its use, and how these practices connect various social realms. I suggest that water in Kathmandu valley plays an important role as a connector encompassing life and death, religion and environment, as well as politics and development.

Beyond Contradiction: Sacred-Profane Waters And The Dialectics Of Everyday Religion, Georgina Drew Dec 2016

Beyond Contradiction: Sacred-Profane Waters And The Dialectics Of Everyday Religion, Georgina Drew

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Studies of the relationship between religion and ecology are either highly enthusiastic about the ways that religious belief can motivate sound resource management or skeptical of the connection. Using an everyday religion approach, this text takes a middle ground to show that resources are variously interpreted in daily life and that religious orientations, while potentially supportive of environmentally sound action, are but one source of influence. Drawing from fieldwork, the discussion employs practice theory to look at how water resources in a Himalayan township are understood and the ways that notions of responsibility for sacred and profane waters are changing. …

Resource Use Decisions: A Framework For Studying Religion And Sustainable Environments, Mark Larrimore Dec 2016

Resource Use Decisions: A Framework For Studying Religion And Sustainable Environments, Mark Larrimore

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Analyses of everyday religion and sustainable environments in the Himalaya are not helped much by the blunt instruments of “world religions” approaches to religion and ecology. This article suggests that a better grounded understanding, especially helpful for policy-makers integrating case studies from widely varying regions, might be gained by bypassing debates about the nature of “religion” entirely. Inspired by discussions in the Everyday Religion and Sustainable Environments project, this article proposes a research framework with the deliberately mundane name resource use decisions. Attending to the reasons given, in various settings and to various stakeholders, for decisions regarding the cultivation and …

Gender Bias And Organ Transplantation In Nepal, Sarah Rasmussen, Pragya Paneru, Kalpana Shrestha, Pukar C. Shrestha Dec 2016

Gender Bias And Organ Transplantation In Nepal, Sarah Rasmussen, Pragya Paneru, Kalpana Shrestha, Pukar C. Shrestha

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Women in Nepal are less likely to receive proper, high quality medical care than their male relatives. Live-donor kidney transplantation provides a compelling example of such disparities, as 84% of recipients are male, 75% of donors are female and most kidneys are transferred from mother to son and from wife to husband. In the case of transplantation, women are not just denied healthcare, they are also responsible for the health of their male kin. Based on semi-structured ethnographic interviews with transplant patients, organ donors, dialysis patients and relatives, this paper elaborates on the social and economic factors that have created …

From Ruler To Healer: Changes In Religious Experience In The Western Himalayas, Asaf Sharabi, Hagar Shalev Dec 2016

From Ruler To Healer: Changes In Religious Experience In The Western Himalayas, Asaf Sharabi, Hagar Shalev

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Research literature on the Western Himalayas emphasizes the theistic control of local deities. In the framework of this ruling system, described by the concepts of 'Little Kingdom' and 'government by deity', local deities functioned as gods and kings. They practice their royalty through a concrete divinity notion, aided by human mediums. In this article we will indicate the beginning of a conceptual change in the perception of a local deity named Mahāsū. Although Mahāsū is still perceived as a ruler, his role has become largely symbolic. We maintain that this illustrates how local theistic conceptions adapt to changes in the …

New Languages Of Schooling: Ethnicity, Education And Equality In Nepal, Uma Pradhan Dec 2016

New Languages Of Schooling: Ethnicity, Education And Equality In Nepal, Uma Pradhan

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Mother-tongue education has remained a controversial issue in Nepal. Scholars, activists and policy-makers have, on the one hand, favored mother-tongue education from the standpoint of social justice. Against these views, others have identified this as predominantly groupist in its orientation and not helpful in an imagination of a unified national community. Taking this contention as a point of inquiry, this paper aims to explore the contested space of mother-tongue education to understand the ways in which people position themselves within the polarizing debates of ethnicity-based claims on education in Nepal. Drawing from the ethnographic fieldwork in mother-tongue education school, in …
