The Compliance-Seeking Process From The Perspective Of The Respondent: The Role Of Goals In Responses To Requests., Barbara L. Woods

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined compliance seeking from the perspective of recipients of direct requests with respect to types of responses, goals, liking, and locus of control. A total of 211 employed adults completed a survey that included responses to hypothetical request scenarios involving liked and disliked co-workers, measures of goals factors, and a measure of locus of control. Six types of responses were identified: simple agreement, elaborated agreement, simple refusal, refusal with reasons, request more information, and postpone decision. Participants reported a tendency to agree with requests, regardless of liking. Factor analyses revealed three-factor models for the liked and disliked conditions. …

Relational Aftermath: Accounts Of Marital Dissolution To Social Network Members., Linda Malone Pledger

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Relationship dissolution is a complex process that involves more than the act of termination. The process affects and is affected by an individual's communication with members of the social network. The attributions made by the individual to account for the dissolution constitute an attempt at failure management. This study was undertaken to determine how the strategies used to manage the failure event of divorce vary according to social network groups, gender, and expectation of approval. One hundred eleven divorced individuals completed questionnaires soliciting recollection of accounts made to family, friends, and acquaintances regarding their divorce. The Christian Preacher As Poet: A Method For Exposition Of Narrative Portions Of Scripture Based On Aristotle's "Poetics"., William Sherman Phillips Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the thesis of this study that Aristotle's Poetics provides the basis for a method of exposition that is "distinctively appropriate" for preaching upon the narrative portions of Scripture. The relationship between Aristotelian poetics and narrative exposition of Scripture is examined in terms of the following two questions: (1) How does Aristotelian poetics meet the expository or interpretive need for narrative exposition of Scripture? (2) How does Aristotelian poetics meet the exhortatory or applicative need for narrative exposition of Scripture? The following arguments are made: (1) Aristotelian poetics provides the basis for a method of narrative exposition that unifies …

Literature As Phenomenon: Attribution Theory And The Act Of Performance (Oral, Interpretation, Pre-Formance, Newcomb, Bakhtin)., John Walthall Creagh Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Attribution theory seeks to explain the ways in which humans ascribe causes to everyday events, especially the observed behavior of other human beings. This study seeks to apply the basic patterns of social attribution to the act of "pre-formance"--the aesthetic act in which a performer engages the voice of a literary text and, through rehearsals involving attribuiton, embodies that voice for some audience. Theodore Newcomb's "symmetry theory," a model that contains the essential features of human attribution, is discussed within the philosophical perspective of phenomenology, and the transformed model is used as the basis for a new theory of the …

Speechwriting In Rhetorical Criticism: An Extension Of Theory As Applied To The Johnson Administration., Suzanne Elizabeth Condray Jan 1980

Speechwriting In Rhetorical Criticism: An Extension Of Theory As Applied To The Johnson Administration., Suzanne Elizabeth Condray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Speechwriting practices have long been associated with rhetorical history. American presidents have employed the speechwriter's assistance since the beginning of this nation. From the dawn of radio, presidential speechwriting practices have grown to the extent that most presidents rely heavily on the writer to prepare the bulk of their messages. While many political speakers have grown to depend on the speechwriter to assist him in preparing the ideas or language of his message, rhetorical critics have largely ignored the writer's influence on the message and his impact on the preparation process. The purpose of this study is fourfold. First of …
