English Immersion Program In Korea: Student Progress After Four Months Of Implementation., Jaiwon Jung Jan 2001

English Immersion Program In Korea: Student Progress After Four Months Of Implementation., Jaiwon Jung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Korea, efforts to teach a non-native language, such as English, to Korean students usually result in native speakers acquiring limited language abilities. As a result, the teaching of English has little effect upon making native speakers fluent in a non-native language. Many foreign language instructors in Korea attempt to find new teaching methods to improve the performance of students in foreign language proficiency. Among the various innovative approaches of the 20th century, research has shown that the immersion approach may be one of the most effective means. Thus this dissertation introduces the innovative immersion teaching methods for Korean school …

A Case Study Of The Developing Literacy Of African -American Learners Attending A Tutoring Program At An Urban African -American Church., Gayle Williams Duskin Jan 2000

A Case Study Of The Developing Literacy Of African -American Learners Attending A Tutoring Program At An Urban African -American Church., Gayle Williams Duskin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study describes the literate abilities of a group of upper level elementary African-American school children who participated in an urban, African-American, church-sponsored, after-school tutorial program. Using an ethnographic research method, I relied on field notes, audio-taped interviews, and writing samples to collect and analyze the data. The participants in the study were six subjects (five females and one male, ages 10 to 12) who were enrolled in the tutorial program. Over the course of seven months (October, 1997 to May, 1998), I observed all activities in which writing literacy took place at the tutorial program. From this observation three …

Texts And Talk: A Close Look At Gender In Literature Discussion Groups., Peggy Sue Rice Jan 1998

Texts And Talk: A Close Look At Gender In Literature Discussion Groups., Peggy Sue Rice

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated discourse according to gender-related patterns of eight sixth-grade students (four boys and four girls) as they discussed four realistic fiction short stories in peer-led discussion groups that alternated between same-sex and mixed-sex group compositions. Descriptive data were analyzed according to the constant comparative method of analysis. Quantitative analysis was used to determine discourse patterns in terms of frequency. Data were analyzed to answer the following questions: (1) Will the discourse patterns vary when the students discuss their responses in same-sex groups and mixed-sex groups? If so, in what ways will they vary? (2) Will gender differences be …

A Cross-Case Analysis Of Middle School Reading Teachers' Theoretical Orientations As They Relate To Classroom Practices., Shirley Theriot Fogleman Jan 1995

A Cross-Case Analysis Of Middle School Reading Teachers' Theoretical Orientations As They Relate To Classroom Practices., Shirley Theriot Fogleman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Each interaction between teachers and students is a reflection of the theory that these professionals, sometimes unknowingly, posit about what should be occurring in their classrooms. The purpose of this study is to explore the differences between middle school language arts teachers' beliefs about how children actually read a text, and how these teachers translate these beliefs into classroom practices. The beliefs we hold about reading comprehension are essential to our understanding about how we should instruct and assess our students in our classes. Leu and Kinzer (1988) refer to two beliefs' frameworks of comprehension in reading, based on the …

Toward Understanding Post-Structuralism And Curriculum., Wen-Song Hwu Jan 1993

Toward Understanding Post-Structuralism And Curriculum., Wen-Song Hwu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes extensions of post-structuralism in contemporary curriculum discourses. Post-structuralist thought is mainly associated with the seminal work of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Michel Serres. Post-structural criticism and analysis challenge prevailing structuralist approaches and question the fundamental assumptions upon which these approaches rest. A key assumption of structural approaches is that all phenomena are constituted by an underlying structure. In curriculum, these structural assumptions (often scientific) remain unacknowledged and thus are immunized against criticism; rather, they are incorporated into the preferred structural analyses, interpretations, and organizations promoted by the promise of order and rationality. …

Remedial English Ten Years After: Former Basic Writers In The Workplace., Eleanor Agnew Jan 1991

Remedial English Ten Years After: Former Basic Writers In The Workplace., Eleanor Agnew

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to find out whether writing skills were a handicap to job success for former basic writers who had graduated from college. A population of 197 former basic writers (FBW's) and 68 former strong writers (FSW's, used as a comparison) were surveyed and interviewed. Research questions included (1) What types of jobs do FBW's have, compared to FSW's, and how much do their feelings about writing affect their choices of major or job? (2) How much and how often do FBW's write at work compared to FSW's? (3) What forms of writing do FBW's do …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Input Type And Output Modification In English As A Second Language., Doris M. V Macdonald Jan 1991

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Input Type And Output Modification In English As A Second Language., Doris M. V Macdonald

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Proposals regarding the beneficial effects of elements of modified interaction such as clarification requests and confirmation checks on SLA have been taken up by a number of researchers who have found evidence for their existence in discourse involving NNSs. These investigators have assumed that the presence of such interactional features are beneficial to language learning, yet there is little empirical evidence to support a causal relationship between the presence of these discourse features and change in the performance of the learner toward target-language forms. Furthermore, the potential benefits of modified interactions have not been evaluated against other classroom practices. This …

A Study Of Metacognitive Skill As Influenced By Expressive Writing In College Introductory Algebra Classes., Naomi Barbara R Allen Jan 1991

A Study Of Metacognitive Skill As Influenced By Expressive Writing In College Introductory Algebra Classes., Naomi Barbara R Allen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The quality of mathematics education has become a major concern to mathematics educators. As a result, increased attention is being given to identifying the abilities that underlie competent performance. An outcome of this effort is an increasing belief that the development of metacognitive skills is an essential component of proficient mathematics performance. Writing, because it promotes reflective thinking, is believed to be the vehicle for this development. Writing in the mathematics classroom has previously received anecdotal support for its benefits to the learner and to the instructor, and limited quantitative benefits in problem-solving ability toward mathematics. This study examined the …

French-English Bilingual Education And Language Achievement Of Second Graders., Paula Marie Claverie Childress Jan 1980

French-English Bilingual Education And Language Achievement Of Second Graders., Paula Marie Claverie Childress

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not second grade students in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana changed differentially in reading and language achievement from regular classroom students as a result of participation in the French-English Bilingual Program. A second purpose was to ascertain whether students in the bilingual program achieved significantly in developing French language ability. Data was coded for the 278 students in the study. The statistical findings (tested at the .05 level) are summarized as follows: (1) Bilingual students did not change differentially in reading achievement from regular classroom students. (2) Females in the bilingual program …
