Hydrological Connectivity Between A Geographically Isolated Wetland And The Upper Floridan Aquifer, Nicholas Priehs Apr 2022

Hydrological Connectivity Between A Geographically Isolated Wetland And The Upper Floridan Aquifer, Nicholas Priehs

LSU Master's Theses

The Upper Floridan Aquifer is the primary source of freshwater for the majority of the southeastern United States. Increased stress on the Upper Floridan Aquifer due to irrigation has resulted in questions about the sustainability of the aquifer. Baker County, Georgia, has a high density of geographically isolated wetlands and of center pivot irrigation wells that are used to meet the demand for irrigation water. These wetlands respond to changes in precipitation and evapotranspiration, in the water level in surface streams, and in the water level of the Upper Floridan Aquifer. Understanding how the response of the wetlands has changed …

Evaluating Substrate Stratification Practices For Enhanced Water Resource Management In Nursery Production, Kristopher S. Criscione Nov 2021

Evaluating Substrate Stratification Practices For Enhanced Water Resource Management In Nursery Production, Kristopher S. Criscione

LSU Master's Theses

The nursery and greenhouse industries have continued to increase in production and sales over the past two decades. This increase in horticultural production necessitates a greater demand for finite natural resources, specifically water. Sustainable water resource management will be critical to the success and continual growth of the nursery industry. Strategic irrigation scheduling and innovative substrate management practices can improve nursery resource efficiency. Soilless substrates were originally utilized by the industry to increase substrate air-filled porosity, to ensure adequately drained container systems. Thus, the implementation of these soilless substrates can lead to an inefficient use of water and fertilizer. Substrate …

Three Essays On Irrigation Water Management In Louisiana Crop Production, Tej Kumar Gautam Mar 2019

Three Essays On Irrigation Water Management In Louisiana Crop Production, Tej Kumar Gautam

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Competition for water resources among agricultural, municipal, and industrial sectors is increasing even in a traditionally water rich state like Louisiana. Irrigation water management is likely to be a critical issue in Louisiana in the near future. We conducted state-wide farm surveys to collect information regarding irrigation practices and concerns from Louisiana farmers during the crop years 2015 and 2016.

We analyzed three different issues associated with irrigation water management in Louisiana crop production. These analyses are presented in the form of three different essays. The first essay identifies the determinants of irrigation technology adoption and crop acreage allocation by …

Economic Impacts Of Groundwater Salinity In Louisiana, Rajan Dhakal Oct 2018

Economic Impacts Of Groundwater Salinity In Louisiana, Rajan Dhakal

LSU Master's Theses

In the United States, nearly 60 million acres of land is affected by water and soil salinity problems that pose a serious threat to the long-term economic and environmental viability of the agricultural sector. Understanding the economic impacts of soil salinity in agricultural lands is essential for planning farming practices in several salinity affected regions. This study presents a two-stage approach to assess the damage from salinity in two major aquifers in Louisiana. In the first stage, looking at the trend of rise in salt content within these aquifers, I predict the future level of salinity by assuming three different …

Influence Of Fertilizer Source And Irrigation Regimen On Containerized Production Of Coleus (Plectranthus Scutellarioides (L.) Codd) 'Solar Sunrise' And Management Of Bermudagrass (Cynodon Dactylon (L.) Pers. X C. Transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) 'Tifway', Kayla Renee Sanders Jan 2016

X C. Transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) 'Tifway', Kayla Renee Sanders

LSU Master's Theses

Fertilizer nutrient losses through leachate and runoff from excessive irrigation in nursery container production and turfgrass management can be high and have negative environmental impacts. The objective of this research was to examine the influence of fertilizer source and irrigation regimen on nutrient losses during nursery container production and turfgrass management. During the container production of coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides (L.) Codd) 'Solar Sunrise', four fertilizer treatments: an unfertilized control; a controlled-release (CRF); a water-soluble (WSF); and a combination of 10% WSF and 90% CRF, were incorporated into a pine bark substrate at 0.30 kg N and P·m-3 in 3.7-L containers …

Emergent Irrigation Agriculture And Settlement Patterns In The Lower Nepeña Valley, North-Central Coast Of Peru, Caitlyn Yoshiko Mcnabb Jan 2013

Emergent Irrigation Agriculture And Settlement Patterns In The Lower Nepeña Valley, North-Central Coast Of Peru, Caitlyn Yoshiko Mcnabb

LSU Master's Theses

The Andes is one of many regions thought to have developed as a pristine hydraulic state; thus the region serves as a testing ground for theories on the development of irrigation. Since Wittfogel (1957) proposed a correlation between irrigation and the development of pristine states, the relationships between social organization, political power, and coordinated subsistence strategies have been hotly debated. This research will examine the role of irrigation in the transition to early urban settlements in the Nepeña Valley, on the north-central coast of Peru. I especially focus on the nature of political structure and social organization, examining the validity …

Use Of Effluent Volumes To Control Leaching In Nursery Container Crops With Tipping Bucket Sensors, Maureen Thiessen Jan 2012

Use Of Effluent Volumes To Control Leaching In Nursery Container Crops With Tipping Bucket Sensors, Maureen Thiessen

LSU Master's Theses

Overirrigating container crops can lead to increased nutrient leaching and negatively impact water quality. Leaching is implemented to reduce substrate salinity. “Leaching fraction” (effluent volume/irrigation volume) has been described by best management practices to monitor irrigation efficiency. Recommendations and methods for controlling leaching fraction can greatly vary. Therefore, two studies were conducted to test the accuracy of attaining targeted leaching fractions compared to the accuracy of leaching targeted percentages of container capacity. In the first study, the effects of container size and substrate moisture content were tested on each method. Three container sizes of pine bark substrate at three moisture …

Level Basin Approaches To Improve Water Management In Surface Irrigation For Northeast Louisiana, Luis R. Ocampo Briceno Jan 2007

Level Basin Approaches To Improve Water Management In Surface Irrigation For Northeast Louisiana, Luis R. Ocampo Briceno

LSU Master's Theses

In the state of Louisiana surface irrigation is widely used due to the low start-up cost, typically high rainfall, and soil conditions. Irrigation scheduling is an important practice to achieve water use efficiency in agriculture. The objectives of this study were to compare three different methods to determine crop evapotranspiration (ETc) for soybeans in addition to, evaluate a computer based irrigation scheduling program using real scale fields. Weather variables, soil moisture and irrigation water use collected during the summer months of 2005 and 2006 at a production agriculture farm in northeast Louisiana were studied. The ETc estimates obtained using atmometers …
