There is significant interest in the models for production of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Until now, the number of known short GRBs with multi-wavelength afterglows has been small. While the Fermi GRB Monitor detects many GRBs relative to the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, the large localization regions makes the search for counterparts difficult. With the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) recently achieving first light, it is now fruitful to use its combination of depth (m AB ∼20.6), field of view (≈47 square degrees), and survey cadence (every ∼3 days) to perform Target of Opportunity observations. We demonstrate this capability on GRB …

Results are reported from a search for low-multiplicity neutrino bursts in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. Such bursts could indicate the detection of a nearby core-collapse supernova explosion. The data were taken from Phase I (1999 November-2001 May), when the detector was filled with heavy water, and Phase II (2001 July-2003 August), when NaCl was added to the target. The search was a blind analysis in which the potential backgrounds were estimated and analysis cuts were developed to eliminate such backgrounds with 90% confidence before the data were examined. The search maintained a greater than 50% detection probability for standard supernovae …

Expectations And Experiences: Case Studies Of Four First-Year Teachers, Sandra B. Hebert Jan 2002

Expectations And Experiences: Case Studies Of Four First-Year Teachers, Sandra B. Hebert

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The current severe teacher shortage in the United States is exacerbated by the numbers of new teachers leaving the profession after only a year in the classroom. What do new teachers expect? How does the reality of their experience match up to their expectations? The purpose of this nine-month qualitative study was to look closely into the expectations and experiences of a small number of beginning teachers. The study focused on four young women's relations with their administrators, other teachers, and their students. The first-year teachers participating in the study included three elementary and one junior high teacher, all of whom …

The Emergence Of Lay Ecclesial Youth Ministry As A Profession Within The Roman Catholic Church., Charlotte Faye Mccorquodale Jan 2001

The Emergence Of Lay Ecclesial Youth Ministry As A Profession Within The Roman Catholic Church., Charlotte Faye Mccorquodale

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The astonishing growth of lay ecclesial ministry in the Roman Catholic Church began in the 1960's with the advent of the Second Vatican Council and with the emergence of a variety of specialized ministries one such ministry was to youth. The focus of this query was on the emergence of the profession of lay ecclesial youth ministry. The growth of the professional field of lay ecclesial ministry in the Roman Catholic Church can be seen in the writings of bishops, theologians, authors, national ministerial associations, and researchers as they address four major areas of concern. Those areas include: (1) the …

Worldly Rites: The Social And Political Significance Of Religious Services In Louisiana, 1803--1865., Julia Huston Nguyen Jan 2001

Worldly Rites: The Social And Political Significance Of Religious Services In Louisiana, 1803--1865., Julia Huston Nguyen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In antebellum and Civil War Louisiana, religious rituals contained more than spiritual meaning. They also carried social and political significance that can illustrate a great deal about that society. Sabbath services, holidays, revivals, baptisms, weddings, and funerals all reflected the values that Louisianans believed to be important. By looking at religion and the ways that residents of Louisiana experienced it, not only on a daily basis but also during the major milestones of life, one can come to a greater understanding of the ways in which they structured their society and interacted with it. Through an examination of Louisiana religion, …

Voluntary Accounting Policy Choices Of Lower -Level Firms In Multi -Firm Organizations., Allen Kenneth Hunt Jan 2001

Voluntary Accounting Policy Choices Of Lower -Level Firms In Multi -Firm Organizations., Allen Kenneth Hunt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the determinants of accounting choices for subsidiary firms in multi-firm organizations. A "subsidiary" is defined as either a company that is controlled (i.e., more than 50 percent ownership) by another corporation (its "parent") or is a firm under the parent company's influence (i.e., between 20 and 50 percent ownership). Previous studies focus exclusively on the parent company; hence little is known about making accounting procedure choices for subsidiaries. As a separate legal entity, a subsidiary's accounting policies should be of interest to its creditors, regulators, and noncontrolling minority-interest shareholders. The accounting procedure choices investigated are depreciation and …

This dissertation explores the political career and personal life of John Tyler from 1790 to 1840. Tyler, the tenth president of the United States, was born into an influential planter family that lived in the Tidewater region of Virginia. His father, for whom he was named, instilled in him a devotion to principle and political service and an appreciation for the role of Virginia in America's history. The elder Tyler, a prominent politician and judge, was also an admirer of Thomas Jefferson and an ardent republican. Tyler dedicated himself to a career in politics imbued with the belief that men …

Show Me The Money: An Analysis Of The Impact Of Voter Recognition On The Campaign Spending Effects Of House And Senate Candidates., Nicholas Chad Long Jan 2001

Show Me The Money: An Analysis Of The Impact Of Voter Recognition On The Campaign Spending Effects Of House And Senate Candidates., Nicholas Chad Long

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this dissertation is campaign spending in congressional elections. I examine the benefits that candidates receive from campaign expenditures. I think that challengers receive greater benefits from spending than incumbents, but that the extent of these benefits depends on the type of challenger. High-quality challengers are those that have previous experience in an important elective office, while low-quality challengers lack this experience. Because of this experience, high-quality challengers enjoy a higher level of recognition among the electorate than low-quality challengers. I think that the benefits that challengers receive from expenditures are inversely related to the level of recognition …

A Drifter Study Of Advection, Deformations, And Patch Variances With Application To Larval Transport And Dispersal In Barataria Bay, Louisiana., Terry L. Schaefer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Field studies were conducted to characterize flow fields and their effect on larval transport and retention within Barataria Bay, Louisiana. Drifter tracking and passive larval sampling was conducted monthly during the spring and summer months from 1994 through 1996. Fifteen drifter tracking sessions were conducted over full tidal cycles (diurnal). Drifter positions were determined approximately every thirty minutes using a GPS receiver. A spline interpolation was used to estimate drifter positions at synchronous five-minute intervals. An analytical methodology of Okubo and coworkers was used to compute deformations; and changes in patch variances from the drifter positions. Mean tidal advection and …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of various lobbying strategies for higher education in state legislatures as perceived by state government relations officers. The target population for the study was defined as individuals currently employed as state government relations officers for public institutions of higher education. Data were collected for this study by surveying government relations officers contacted through the 7th Annual State Relations Conference. The total number of usable responses was 109 (74%) of 147 surveyed from 36 states. The instrument utilized in this study was a researcher designed questionnaire that included a demographic …

The Impact Of Human Resource Expenditures And The Minimum Foundation Program's Level 3 Subsidy On Academic Productivity In Louisiana., John Paul Beaudoin Jan 2000

The Impact Of Human Resource Expenditures And The Minimum Foundation Program's Level 3 Subsidy On Academic Productivity In Louisiana., John Paul Beaudoin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the impact of instructional salaries with and without a state-sponsored, supply-side subsidy on the academic productivity of schools in Louisiana. The subsidy under investigation was the Level 3 allocation for instructional salaries outlined in Louisiana's Minimum Foundation Program (MFP) that provides fiscal support for educational costs to local school boards. An educational production function model within the general systems framework outlined by Rossmiller and Geske (1977) was used in this study. All selected variables were aggregated to the school-level, which served as the unit of analysis for the study. The study's final sample (n = 296) approximated …

Reformers In The Marketplace Of Ideas: Student Activism And American Democracy In Cold War Los Angeles., Kurt Edward Kemper Jan 2000

Reformers In The Marketplace Of Ideas: Student Activism And American Democracy In Cold War Los Angeles., Kurt Edward Kemper

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Contemporary opinion and much scholarship frequently interprets student activists from the 1960s and 1970s as radical critics of both American society and foreign policy, seeking revolutionary changes in both and caring little of the consequences to the existing order. In fact, conservative forces and values based on democratic capitalism drove student activism of the period. Students' core values of equality of opportunity, equality of and before the law, and faith in the democratic process motivated their activism not just towards civil rights and the war in Vietnam, but also towards issues of student funding and institutions, indicating that self-interest served …

"That Preacher's Going To Eat All The Chicken!": Power And Religion In Richard Wright., Tara Tanisha Green Jan 2000

"That Preacher's Going To Eat All The Chicken!": Power And Religion In Richard Wright., Tara Tanisha Green

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores the ways that Richard Wright's work reflects both history and his own personal experiences (memories) of the South. These two elements---history and memory---served to inspire Wright's, the writer's, imagination, and to fuel Wright's, a Black man's, anger and hostility. Wright's technique of (re)writing or mastering the images of Black males as they struggle in environments they perceive as hostile, is compounded by his feelings about religion. Although Wright rejected organized religions, whether Christian, tribal, or Communism, he, ironically, used the figurative language similar to that of sermons, including Biblical stories and symbols, to appeal to his readers …

The Effects Of Government Funding On Non -Profit Organizational Behavior., Melissa Scott Flournoy Jan 2000

The Effects Of Government Funding On Non -Profit Organizational Behavior., Melissa Scott Flournoy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses the problem of determining the effects of government funding on non-profit organizational behavior. The definition of a non-profit organization is a formal organization, privately incorporated but serving a public purpose, self-governing, voluntary to some degree and non-profit distributing (Salamon, 1993). The literature review demonstrates the increasing role of non-profit organizations as a means of social service delivery in the United States. As a result of policy changes and funding opportunities, non-profit organizations are increasingly providing services that were in the purview of government. The hypothesis for this study is that government funding positively affects the organizational behavior …

Effects Of Cobalt-60 Gamma Irradiation On The Malaysian Prawn Macrobrachium Rosenbergii., Nyanti Lee Jan 2000

Effects Of Cobalt-60 Gamma Irradiation On The Malaysian Prawn Macrobrachium Rosenbergii., Nyanti Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A major obstacle in culture of the Malaysian prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is the complex social structure whereby a few large males dominate the population and reduce production. The goal of this work was to induce reproductive sterility by use of gamma radiation as a means to increase production. Of the 62 publications related to the use of gamma radiation in aquatic species published between 1938 and 1996, 66% did not indicate performance of dosimetry (dosage verification). Samples were not rotated during irradiation in 98% of these studies, which introduces considerable variation in dose. A dosimetric study in this dissertation found …

Three Essays On Political Economy And International Trade., Far-Tsair Lai Jan 2000

Three Essays On Political Economy And International Trade., Far-Tsair Lai

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the standard common agency model of politics, the interest groups always lobby a single policy-making entity for policy favor. To deal with this unreality, I step in some issues about the trade policy making that is entangled with the multiplicity of public decision-makers. My study cooperates multi-agent and the common agency model to analyze the trade policy making under the political system that is controlled by a number of lawmakers. The analysis points out that the committee of symmetric lawmakers behaves like a single government but the equilibrium policy is not efficient. Because the presence of multiple players on …

Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung Jan 2000

Agricultural Trade Liberalization And Uneven Development: The Case Of South Korea., Heesun Chung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was concluded in 1993, was the principal global forum to discuss agricultural trade in an extensive way. In this last venue of the GATT, South Korean negotiators had to agree to open the nation's agricultural markets so as to assure manufacturing export access to international markets amidst heightening Pressure from surplus agricultural producers A broad range of economic studies have estimated that as an aftermath of the Uruguay Round, a majority of South Korean farmers, who are comparatively disadvantaged due to small-scale, labor-intensive farming, might be displaced. …

Locus Of Control, Religious Values, Work Values And Social Policy Choices., Carolyn Kasprzak Falkowski Jan 2000

Locus Of Control, Religious Values, Work Values And Social Policy Choices., Carolyn Kasprzak Falkowski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Individuals' religious beliefs were examined in terms of their effect on one's positions on various social issues. Beliefs regarding salvation were chosen as beliefs central to a Christian faith. Locus of control and Protestant work ethic were included as related concepts. A sample of Christian (primarily Protestant) seminary students was selected in this study in order to include individuals who are more likely to have actively considered both their theology and their beliefs on social policies. Most of the seminarians expressed a significantly internal locus of control and some acceptance of the concepts included in the Protestant work ethic. Most …

Country Of Origin, Date Of Entry, And English Speaking Ability As Predictors Of Immigrant Afdc And Ssi Usage., Rebel Mary Reavis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Immigration flows into the United States have changed over the last few decades. Before the 1960s, immigrants came mainly from European countries. Since the 1960s, immigrants coming from third world countries have increased while those from European countries have relatively decreased. This changing immigration pattern has sparked passionate debate over immigration policy and its role in adding members to welfare recipient rolls. Researchers have not come to an agreement on how to best examine immigrant welfare receipt. There is disagreement about immigrant status definitions, unit of analysis choices, and welfare measurements. These theoretical and methodological choices influence research results and, …

The Historical And Cultural Geography Of The Grange In Minnesota And Louisiana, 1870-1880., Linda Marie Thorstad Jan 1999

The Historical And Cultural Geography Of The Grange In Minnesota And Louisiana, 1870-1880., Linda Marie Thorstad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study uses historical and geographical inquiry to examine postbellum agrarian social, political and economic unrest that in 1868 led to the formation of the first national, secret and ritualistic, fraternal agricultural society known as the Grange. The Grange was created to unite farmers through cooperative buying and selling, to promote agricultural education, and to create a social organization that encouraged both women and men to acquire and refine leadership skills. It also sought to address concerns over monopolies and promoted state regulation of railroad rates. Although Grange membership peaked in 1875 and sharply declined through 1880, it forged the …

Understanding Congressional Responsiveness., Phillip Jude Ardoin Jan 1999

Understanding Congressional Responsiveness., Phillip Jude Ardoin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation addresses a simple question: Why are some members of congress very responsive to the ideological preferences of their constituency while others appear to ignore their constituency? Although numerous scholars have explored this issue, they have consistently: (1) limited their analyses to the influence of member characteristics while ignoring the potentially significant influence of constituent factors and (2) failed to test a single comprehensive model of congressional responsiveness that considers the full range of member and constituent factors hypothesized to influence variation in congressional responsiveness. This dissertation directly addresses these two problems by developing and testing a comprehensive model …

"A Perfect War": Politics And Parties In Louisiana, 1824--1861., John Michael Sacher Jan 1999

"A Perfect War": Politics And Parties In Louisiana, 1824--1861., John Michael Sacher

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

My dissertation explores Louisiana's political development from 1824 to 1861. Many antebellum state studies have been written, but none focus specifically on Louisiana. While sharing the rest of the South's commitment to slavery and cotton, Louisiana possessed atypical attributes including: a unique ethnic composition, a sugar cane crop dependent upon a protective tariff, and the presence of New Orleans, the South's foremost commercial city. Louisiana's antebellum political situation resulted from the interaction of these distinctive traits with the characteristics that Louisiana shared in common with the rest of the United States. The primary focus of this political narrative is the …

An Empirical Examination Of Maximum Entropy Estimation., Randall Charles Campbell Jan 1999

An Empirical Examination Of Maximum Entropy Estimation., Randall Charles Campbell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Maximum entropy estimation is a relatively new estimation technique in econometrics. We carry out several Monte Carlo experiments using real data as a basis in order to understand the properties of the maximum entropy estimator. We compare the maximum entropy and generalized maximum entropy estimators to traditional estimation techniques in linear regression, binary choice, and multinomial choice models. In addition, we discuss maximum entropy estimation in censored and truncated regression models. We find that the generalized maximum entropy estimator dominates the logit estimator and the multinomial logit estimator in Monte Carlo experiments. The generalized maximum entropy estimator in discrete choice …

Political Liberalization In Post -Communist Central Asia: A Comparative Study., Muhammad Islam Jan 1999

Political Liberalization In Post -Communist Central Asia: A Comparative Study., Muhammad Islam

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation seeks to explain variation in political liberalization among three post-communist Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. These countries share several common political outcomes such as the dominance of the executive and a high degree of statism. Yet they also witnessed significant variation in political liberalization within a short period of time after their independence in 1991. The fact that these countries share several common political, socioeconomic, cultural, and historical features makes the rise of this political variance more intriguing than the rise of the above, however, salient, common political outcomes among them within few years of their …

Analysis Of *Policy Alternatives In The Implementation Of A Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program For Agriculture., Hugo Cardona Castillo Jan 1999

Analysis Of *Policy Alternatives In The Implementation Of A Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program For Agriculture., Hugo Cardona Castillo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Agriculture has been singled out as one of the major nonpoint sources of water pollution. To identify alternative policy tools for the implementation of a non-regulatory approach to comply with the Coastal Nonpoint Pollution Control Program (CNPCP) required by The Coastal Zone Act Reauthorization Amendments of 1990, policy makers need to determine factors that may influence producers' willingness to adopt proposed Best Management Practices (BMPs). Neoclassical economic concepts of utility maximization on the part of agricultural producers constitutes the theoretical background in this study, but it is enhanced with the incorporation of a well proved set of theoretical tools based …

Albert Camus's Reconstruction Of Symbolic Reality: Exile, Judgment, And Kingdom., Peter Alan Petrakis Jan 1998

Albert Camus's Reconstruction Of Symbolic Reality: Exile, Judgment, And Kingdom., Peter Alan Petrakis

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Throughout his life, Albert Camus was deeply concerned with problems of language and representation. Often mislabeled an existentialist or philosopher of the absurd, his skepticism of modern rationality has been well recorded. Yet despite considerable scholarly attention, a satisfactory understanding of Camus's thoughts on language has not been achieved. This essay is an effort to rectify the situation by carefully exploring Camus's use and understanding of symbols. By first gleaning a theory of symbolization from the philosophical works of Ernst Cassirer, Eric Voegelin, and Paul Ricoeur, and then comparing it to Camus's writings on myth, symbols, and narrative, it is …

Tobacco Farming In The Age Of The Surgeon General's Warning: The Cultural Ecology And Structuration Of Burley Tobacco Production In Madison County, North Carolina., Catherine Marie Algeo Jan 1998

Tobacco Farming In The Age Of The Surgeon General's Warning: The Cultural Ecology And Structuration Of Burley Tobacco Production In Madison County, North Carolina., Catherine Marie Algeo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study analyzes the transformation of burley tobacco farming underway in the late twentieth century in light of social, political, and economic forces that make tobacco a contested crop. It focuses on one county in southern Appalachia, Madison County, North Carolina, where tobacco has been a cash crop for over a hundred years. A synthesis of the theoretical and methodological approaches of cultural ecology and structuration is proposed as a means of exploring the components of agricultural change within Appalachia at a continuum of scales from the local to the national, while contextualizing farming within its environmental and social settings. …

Indigenous Rights Movements, Land Conflicts, And Cultural Politics In Taiwan: A Case Study Of Li-Shan., Yi-Fong Chen Jan 1998

Indigenous Rights Movements, Land Conflicts, And Cultural Politics In Taiwan: A Case Study Of Li-Shan., Yi-Fong Chen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Land rights claims remain the major focus of world indigenous movements. Lands relate to the formation of indigenous identity, religious practices, and the material base for indigenous cultural survival. From a spatial/geographical perspective, this dissertation explores the influences of Taiwan's state policies on indigenous peoples, their cultures, identities, and human-land relationship. The Li-shan area, in central Taiwan, is the focus of the research due to the fact that the most severe land disputes are in this area, as well as longest history of economic interactions among indigenous peoples, the dominant Han people, and the State, in the postwar Taiwan. The …

Evangelical Communication: Reference Group Membership Influence On Message Interpretation And Public Opinion., Mary Diane Hollems Jan 1998

Evangelical Communication: Reference Group Membership Influence On Message Interpretation And Public Opinion., Mary Diane Hollems

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present dissertation was to examine the influence of reference group membership on message interpretation and whether one's interpretation then influences one's agreement with the message source and subsequent willingness to speak with the message source about the topic. In particular, this study looked at conservative Christian reference group membership and message interpretations about the topic of abortion. The independent variables of level of Christian fundamentalism, involvement in a Christian reference group, and socio-political conservatism were averaged to create a conservative fundamentalist composite score which was then used to split the sample at the median. Findings indicated …
