Faculty Senate Newsletter, September 2010, Louisiana State University And Agricultural & Mechanical College
LSU Faculty Senate Publications
Message from the President: The cloudy, demoralizing times in which we now work diminish interest even in silver linings, especially given that a shower of gold is what our University most needs. Nevertheless, the ensemble of crises that now bugles us into action provides an occasion for empirical as well as speculative consideration of shibboleths about the academic workplace. One easy observation is that the University continues to function and to do good work through the good efforts and intentions of good workers. Some may ask whether the Faculty Senate Monthly Newsletter ought only to focus on the higher education …

What Content Makes People Want To Use Sports Websites?, Cara Francesca De Carlo
LSU Master's Theses
This study looked at sports websites to see how the variables information, humor, entertainment, community, and credibility affected sports website users’ intentions to use and re-use sports websites. Three groups of 25 and one group of 30 participants each completed a website viewing activity and corresponding survey. There were four website viewing activities (one for each group). The activities led participants on tours of ESPN.com, Deadspin.com, Football Outsiders, and Yahoo! Sports. Furthermore, the tours were designed to expose participants to the variables (as defined under disposition theory and uses and gratifications). Likewise, the corresponding survey assessed participants’ intentions to use …
Application-Level Optimization Of End-To-End Data Transfer Throughput, Esma Yildirim
Application-Level Optimization Of End-To-End Data Transfer Throughput, Esma Yildirim
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
For large-scale distributed applications, effective use of available network throughput and optimization of data transfer speed is crucial for end-to-end application performance. Today, many regional and national optical networking initiatives such as LONI, ESnet and Teragrid provide high speed network connectivity to their users. However, majority of the users fail to obtain even a fraction of the theoretical speeds promised by these networks due to issues such as sub-optimal protocol tuning, disk bottleneck on the sending and/or receiving ends, and processor limitations. This implies that having high speed networks in place is important but not sufficient for the improvement of …
Similarities And Differences In Self-Disclosure And Friendship Development Between Fact-To-Face Communication And Facebook, Pavica Sheldon
Similarities And Differences In Self-Disclosure And Friendship Development Between Fact-To-Face Communication And Facebook, Pavica Sheldon
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This research identified the patterns of self-disclosure between face-to-face and Facebook friends’ interactions. A survey of 317 participants was conducted to compare the hypothesized relationships among social attraction, self-disclosure, predictability and trust in three types of relationships: recently added Facebook friend, exclusive Facebook friend, and an exclusive face-to-face friend. Data was analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM), multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), t-tests and correlations. Results indicated that individuals reporting high levels of social attraction also reported having greater self-disclosure with their latest added Facebook friend, exclusive Facebook friend and an exclusive face-to-face friend. This supports a theorem of Uncertainty …
The Influence Of A State Law Enforcement Training Academy On Future Performance Of Law Enforcement Officers In A Southeastern State Of The United States, Cary Allen Caro
The Influence Of A State Law Enforcement Training Academy On Future Performance Of Law Enforcement Officers In A Southeastern State Of The United States, Cary Allen Caro
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the influence of the state police law enforcement academy on the performance of commissioned officers in the field training officer (FTO) program in a state in the Southeastern region of the United States. The law enforcement training academy is paramount in preparing cadets for the roles, responsibilities, and activities that graduates assume independently in the field. As such, it is important to understand the value added to future performance in the field through adequate preparation in the training academy. This dissertation analyzes a sample of officers in the Southeastern region of the United States and explores the …
Users' Understandings Of The Virtual Economy In Social Virtual Worlds: Consumption And Entrepreneurship Of Virtual Goods, Yoonhyuk Jung
Users' Understandings Of The Virtual Economy In Social Virtual Worlds: Consumption And Entrepreneurship Of Virtual Goods, Yoonhyuk Jung
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Social virtual worlds (SVWs) such as Second Life have gained immense popularity during the last decade. Their popularity is reflected in the explosive growth of the in-world economy, which is mainly supported by users’ consumption of virtual goods and entrepreneurial behavior. Users’ economic behavior has increased the size of the virtual economy to reach over $1B in the United States in 2009 (Nicholson 2009). Given that virtual consumption and entrepreneurship have become an important part of everyday virtual life in SVWs, understanding these two types of economic activities is an essential aspect to understanding user behavior in SVWs. This research …
