The Effects Of Relaxation And Laughter On The Perceived Intensity And Affect Of Pain Tolerance., Simon Davies Jan 1989

The Effects Of Relaxation And Laughter On The Perceived Intensity And Affect Of Pain Tolerance., Simon Davies

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study described the effect of relaxation and laughter on the perceived intensity and affect of pain induced by a cold water pressor test. Equal numbers of female athletic and non-athletic subjects (N = 36) were selected from varsity athletes and undergraduates at Louisiana State University. All subjects were pre-tested on their tolerance to a cold water pressor test. Responses on visual analogue scales for perceived pain intensity (I) and affect (A), and submersion time were recorded. The volunteer subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups: relaxation-inducing, laughter-inducing, or control. Following a 20 minute exposure to the audio …

Interpretation Of Solid State Deuterium Nmr Spectroscopic Parameters., Kermin Guo Jan 1989

Interpretation Of Solid State Deuterium Nmr Spectroscopic Parameters., Kermin Guo

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Solid-state deuterium NMR spectroscopic parameters including the deuterium quadrupole coupling constant and asymmetry parameter are interpreted in both theoretical and experimental aspects. Ab initio molecular orbital calculations were performed on the alkali metal hydrides, toluene, thymine, acetic acid dimer, and phenylacetic acid molecules with different conformations. In the alkali metal hydrides, the electric field gradient at the hydrogen atom site was calculated in three model systems: terminal metal hydride, bridging metal hydride, and dihydrogen adducts. The effect of metal hydride geometry on the deuterium quadrupole coupling constant was examined. The results can be used in the assignment and interpretation of …

Overestimation Of Basis Set Superposition Error In Molecular Dimer Correlation Potential Energy Calculations., Jia-An Yang Jan 1989

Overestimation Of Basis Set Superposition Error In Molecular Dimer Correlation Potential Energy Calculations., Jia-An Yang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is important to remove the basis set superposition error (BSSE) from the intermolecular potential energy calculations with the counterpoise (CP) correction especially for weak intermolecular interactions. However, it has been still questioned whether the counterpoise (CP) correction overestimates the real BSSE. To answer this question is the purpose of this research. In this study, the overestimation of basis set superposition error (BSSE) by the counterpoise (CP) method has been analyzed by an approach called "localized orbital pair correlation". This approach is able to eliminate the overestimation of basis set superposition error (BSSE) for the second order potential energies. Prototype …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Biological And Synthetic Tetranuclear Iron-Sulfur Clusters., Yvonne Amalia Onate Jan 1989

Spectroscopic Studies Of Biological And Synthetic Tetranuclear Iron-Sulfur Clusters., Yvonne Amalia Onate

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Room-temperature UV-visible adsorption, low-temperature magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopies have been used to characterize the electronic, magnetic and structural properties of the (4Fe-4S) centers in Azotobacter vinelandii Fe proteins from Mo- and V-nitrogenases (Av2 and Av2$\sp\prime$, respectively), and Bacillus subtilis glutamine phosphoribosylpyrophosphate amidotransferase. These studies have characterized the S = 1/2 and S = 3/2 forms of the (4Fe-4S) $\sp{1+}$ cluster in native Av2 and Av2$\sp\prime$ in the presence and absence of the protein unfold agent urea, glassing solvents, such as ethylene glycol and glycerol, and nucleotides, such as ATP. The results …
