Dependence Of Fishery Species On Salt Marshes: The Role Of Food And Refuge, Donald F. Boesch, R. Eugune Turner Dec 1984

Dependence Of Fishery Species On Salt Marshes: The Role Of Food And Refuge, Donald F. Boesch, R. Eugune Turner

Faculty Publications

Salt marshes are widely believed to serve as nurseries for many fishes and crustaceans of fishery value as a result of the high production of vascular plant detritus and the protection from predation offered by shallow, spatially complex habitats. Comparisons of the yields of species which reside in salt marsh habitats during critical life history stages (such as penaeid shrimp) with the area of such habitats and their greater densities in flooded marshes and associated tidal creeks support the premise that marshes enhance the yield of such species. A range of evidence, including the amount of detrital export from marshes, …

Raman Microprobe Determination Of Local Crystal Orientation In Laser Annealed Silicon, J. B. Hopkins, L. A. Farrow, G. J. Fisanick Dec 1984

Raman Microprobe Determination Of Local Crystal Orientation In Laser Annealed Silicon, J. B. Hopkins, L. A. Farrow, G. J. Fisanick

Faculty Publications

In this letter we discuss the application of polarization selective Raman microprobe spectroscopy to the detailed, nondestructive analysis of the local crystal orientation of a polycrystalline silicon sample grown over SiO 2 pads and laser annealed. Intensity measurements taken as a function of input polarization angle are fit to an expression derived from the Raman scattering selection rules to calculate the angles by which the crystal structure is twisted within the original substrate plane, as well as the degree of tipping of the crystal plane away from the plane of the Si substrate.

Effect Of Inoculum Density On Reproduction Of Reniform Nematode Rotylenchulus Reniformis And On Root Development Of Sweet Potato Cultivars, Alice Karikurubu Sep 1984

Effect Of Inoculum Density On Reproduction Of Reniform Nematode Rotylenchulus Reniformis And On Root Development Of Sweet Potato Cultivars, Alice Karikurubu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of inoculum density on reproduction of the reniform nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis, and on root development of sweet potato cultivars; W-152, Centennial, Porto Rico and Goldrush was studied under greenhouse conditions. The inoculum density had no significant effect on the root weight of the cultivars tested. The number of mature females on root systems was higher at the highest inoculum level and the number of eggs per female was significantly higher at lower densities. The number of eggs produced per root system at different inoculum densities was not significantly different on the cultivar Goldrush but was higher on the …

A Fluid Inclusion Study Of Diagenetic Mineral Phases, Upper Jurassic Smackover Formation, Southwest Arkansas And Northeast Texas, Terrence Clark O'Hearn Aug 1984

A Fluid Inclusion Study Of Diagenetic Mineral Phases, Upper Jurassic Smackover Formation, Southwest Arkansas And Northeast Texas, Terrence Clark O'Hearn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Homogenization and final melting temperature data from primary and secondary two-phase fluid inclusions within carbonate and sulfate mineral phases reflect the physical re-equilibration of pre-burial calcites and the precipitation of late diagenetic mineral phases during the burial of the upper Smackover (Upper Jurassic, Oxfordian) lime-grainstones in southwestern Arkansas and northeastern Texas. Homogenization temperatures range from 83.0° to 153.8°C (uncorrected for excess ambient formation pressures at time of trapping) . Final melting points range from -33.4° to -13.5°C. Statistically distinct temperature populations reveal the re-equilibration of pre-burial bladed calcite cements and parallel the subsequent paragenesis during burial of non-fabric-selective dolomite, zoned …

Five-Dimensional Quasispin And The Spectra Of Odd-Parity Yrast Configurations In The Ba Region, K. J. Weeks, J. P. Draayer, K. T. Hecht Feb 1984

Five-Dimensional Quasispin And The Spectra Of Odd-Parity Yrast Configurations In The Ba Region, K. J. Weeks, J. P. Draayer, K. T. Hecht

Faculty Publications

The 5-dimensional quasispin formalism is used to evaluate the (n, T)-dependent factors of the matrix elements of abnormal parity operators of relevance for yrast-band spectroscopy. The formalism allows the leading pseudo-SU(3) representation of the normal (N) parity part of a shell-model configuration to be coupled to low-seniority states of the abnormal (A) parity high-j intruder part of the configuration. To illustrate the importance of the nA, TA dependence of the (A) to (N) space-coupling matrix elements this model is applied to the negative-parity yrast spectra of 127La and 127Ba, using hamiltonian parameters which give a reasonable fit for 126Ba. The …
