Handel's English Oratorio Arias Based On Biblical Sources: An Annotated Catalogue. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Randall Richardson

The oratorios of George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) contain many outstanding arias. The typical aria is ordinarily diatonic and is a combination of symmetrical and asymmetrical phrase-lengths. Although sharing the same basic musical style, these arias are often quite different. Their ranges extend from the interval of a minor seventh to two octaves and sixty-six percent of them are set in forms other than da capo. In addition, the oratorio arias display a diversity of orchestration ranging from continuo arias to those that call for as many as eighteen different instruments. This dissertation consists of two parts, both of which share a common link through their inspiration from Hinduism. Part I is an analysis of Hovhaness's Symphony No. 19 (Vishnu). Part II is an original composition in three movements for orchestra entitled Kshetrajna. Hovhaness's Symphony No. 19 (Vishnu), composed between July and August, 1966, in Luzern, Switzerland, is a single movement work of tripartite structure, for symphony orchestra. The title, Vishnu, refers to the second person of the Hindu trinity, whose name is a remarkable metaphor for the explosive energies and sustaining forces of the universe. Rudimental drumming gained significance in America during the period of the Revolution. Ever since the late eighteenth-century and through the nineteenth-century, it was used exclusively in the military. This study traces the migration of drum rudiments and their use in military settings from Great Britain to America. The contributions of the Swiss drummers and the incorporation of their drum music into American rudimental drumming are also examined. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of self-evaluation by beginning wind instrumental students of defined musical and behavioral objectives. Specific areas in which effects were studied included attitude, physical playing fundamentals, and musical/technical skill development. Attitudes examined included students' attitude toward (a) school, (b) band, (c) instrument, (d) practice, (e) band director, and (f) self. Behavioral/musical objectives examined included (a) tone; pitch; rhythm notes (technical accuracy); and playing position (posture, embouchure, hand position); and (b) "practiced at home.". Before initiation of the study, all students completed an attitude questionnaire and played excerpts from their class work. …

Tonal Methods Of Cyclic Unification In Haydn's Mature Keyboard Sonatas., Stuart David Foster

The purpose of this monograph is to explore the diverse types of harmonic relationships among movements in the mature keyboard sonatas of Joseph Haydn. The mature sonatas are defined as those written ca. 1765 and later, of which there are thirty-five. This study draws examples from seventeen of these sonatas in which intermovement harmonic relationships make significant contributions to the overall unity of the sonata. In discussing questions of unity in Haydns music, most scholars have concentrated on thematic or motivic similarities, which are perhaps the most obvious unifying features. An investigation of the Georgian poetry settings of Michael Head (1900-1976) constitutes the central purpose of this study. To that purpose the Georgian settings are documented, and the stylistic procedures explored. In addition, Head's complete solo song output has been catalogued. This study is divided into five chapters and one appendix. Chapter I furnishes introductory information about the study. Chapter II defines Georgian poetry. Chapter III explores the stylistic features apparent in the works of two influential predecessors in the field of the English solo art song, Roger Quilter and Peter Warlock. The nine Etudes-Tableaux, op. 39 (1916-17) for piano solo are the last important works written by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) before his exile from Russia in 1917. The use of the word "Tableaux" in the title suggests an association with pictures, paintings, or scenes. Although the composer often wrote under the external influence of extra-musical sources, he rarely revealed them. This study examines the musical and extra-musical imagery which influenced Rachmaninoff's compositional style as observed in op. 39, the most important elements being the Dies irae from the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead, Russian chant, bell sonorities, and paintings by …

The coloratura "mad scene" was an outstanding feature found in several nineteenth-century operas. Significant in its display of the performer's talent, it requires the ultimate combination of vocal virtuosity and dramatic expression. Each scene exhibits the numerous individual musical characteristics of its specific composer. This study will seek to define and illustrate some of these characteristics as found in the following six scenes: (1) "Al dolce guidami," Anna Bolena (1830), Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848); (2) "Ah!
