Investigation Of Flow Patterns In Various Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Thomas Joseph Martin Jr Nov 1989

Investigation Of Flow Patterns In Various Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Thomas Joseph Martin Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The theoretical hydraulic retention time of wastewater treatment plants is often used to predict the efficiency of treatment and to calculate operational parameters. However, these values are related to the actual hydraulic retention time. When there is a large discrepancy between the actual and predicted values, the actual hydraulic retention time can be determined by marking a parcel of wastewater and recording its passage through the system. This investigation utilized rhodamine WT, a fluorescent dye, to track the movement of wastewater through a stabilization lagoon and a rock-reed filter. The loss of rhodamine WT to sorption, biodegradation and photodegradation was …

Musical Theory And Practice In The Stage, Film, And Non-Theatre Collaborative Works Of Bertolt Brecht And Hanns Eisler, 1930-1956, Philip Lee Craik May 1989

Musical Theory And Practice In The Stage, Film, And Non-Theatre Collaborative Works Of Bertolt Brecht And Hanns Eisler, 1930-1956, Philip Lee Craik

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The collaborative works of Bertolt Brecht and Hanns Eisler are based on a conscious aesthetic rising out of the application of the principles of dialectical materialism to all aspects of dramatic writing, musical composition, and theatre production. Although Brecht had definite opinions about the use of music in his own epic theatre productions, it was not until he met Eisler that he discovered a philosophical basis for those opinions in the writings of Hegel and Marx. The early collaborative work of these two was shaped by their association with the German Workers' Music Movement which took an active part in …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The goal of the current study was to gain knowledge of the impact that dietary compliance has on quality of life for end-stage renal disease patients receiving chronic in-center hemodialysis. As a result of this type of research, health care professionals may better understand the individual and collective influence that various aspects of dietary compliance have on quality of life. This knowledge may be helpful in making future recommendations about the necessity of the dietary regimen. This study investigated the relation between three commonly employed physiological parameters of dietary compliance (blood urea nitrogen, potassium, and intersession weight gain) and four …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Effects Of Quality Factors On The Price Of Rough Rice In Louisiana., John Frederick Denison Jan 1989

An Empirical Analysis Of The Effects Of Quality Factors On The Price Of Rough Rice In Louisiana., John Frederick Denison

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation analyzes the effects of quality factors on prices paid producers for long and medium grain rough rice in Louisiana. Rough rice prices, and other information surrounding quality, were collected for the study for the 1986/87 and 1987/88 marketing years from the Louisiana Farm Bureau Marketing Association in Crowley, Louisiana. The relationship between the price of rough rice, and its quality attributes or characteristics, was analyzed in a hedonic price framework. A conceptual model for the Louisiana rough rice market was constructed, and estimated premiums and discounts reported for a set of quality factors believed to influence producer prices. …

Effects Of Cocaine Use And Withdrawal On Clinical Memory And New Learning., Madeline Uddo-Crane

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This project was conceptualized as an exploratory examination of the neuropsychological sequelae of cocaine abuse, specifically the drug's effect on new learning and memory. The experimental groups were composed of 30 veterans enrolled in a drug treatment program for cocaine abuse. This group was divided equally by route of administration, i.e., group one included 15 individuals whose preferred route of administration was intravenous injection; group two included 15 individuals whose preferred route of administration was smoking. The comparison group consisted of 15 individuals enlisted in the National Guard. The groups were essentially homogeneous, with a mean age of 34.6 ($SD$ …

Dispersion And Physiological Ecology Of Mosquito Adults In Louisiana Ricelands., Alan Richard Holck Jan 1989

Dispersion And Physiological Ecology Of Mosquito Adults In Louisiana Ricelands., Alan Richard Holck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A sampling technique for estimating the size of adult mosquito populations in vegetation was developed. Regression analysis was used to obtain absolute density estimates from sweep net. Diurnal population size estimates of Louisiana riceland mosquitoes were made on a 35.6-square km site 5 km south of Kaplan, LA. Four mosquito species were present: Psorophora columbiae, Anopheles quadrimaculatus, An. crucians and Culex salinarius. Mosquito species were highly stratified in their distribution. Psorophora columbiae was primarily observed in pastures with livestock and in rice fields. Both Anophelines were found only in structures. Culex salinarius did not exhibit habitat preference. Anopheles quadrimaculatus exhibited …

Toward The Inclusion Of Environmental Factors In The Concept And Measure Of National Income., George Edward Foy Jr Jan 1989

Toward The Inclusion Of Environmental Factors In The Concept And Measure Of National Income., George Edward Foy Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation uses Sir John Hicks' concept of income as a guide to integrate environmental factors into the concept and measure of national income. Chapter 1 introduces Hicks' concept of income as the maximum amount which one can consume in a given period and still be as well off at the end of the period as he was at the beginning. This basic idea of sustainability requires accounting for the net depletion of all capital consumed in current production. Chapter 2 documents recent trends in natural resource use to demonstrate that exclusion of the depreciation of environmental capital from NNP …

Barotropic Shelf Circulation Forced By An Isolated Oceanic Disturbance., Xinyu He Jan 1989

Barotropic Shelf Circulation Forced By An Isolated Oceanic Disturbance., Xinyu He

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A 'slowly varying' and 'isolated' oceanic disturbance may locally drive the shelf circulation. This situation is analytically studied using a linear, steady-state, barotropic model. The solution has a dipolar structure over the shelf. This is consistent with an integral theorem of zero net relative angular momentum on the f-plane with a sloping topography, derived herein. It is found that the forced circulation patterns are controlled by the alongshore scale of the disturbance, magnitude of bottom stress, and geometry of the shelf. In particular, by generating significant relative vorticity due to the ageostrophic motion, the friction strongly influences the center position, …

Effects Of Communicative Reading Strategies On The Literacy Behaviors Of Third-Grade Poor Readers., Sue Neames Hernandez Jan 1989

Effects Of Communicative Reading Strategies On The Literacy Behaviors Of Third-Grade Poor Readers., Sue Neames Hernandez

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Communicative Reading Strategies, an integrated approach to remedial reading instruction, on the reading, writing, and oral language proficiency of poor readers. Twenty eight third graders with poor reading and language abilities were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Communicative Reading Strategies (CRS) were employed with the experimental group. CRS treats reading as an integrated language process. Techniques were used such as: (1) providing orienting information, (2) clarifying the author's intention, (3) reducing the linguistic complexity of the text, (4) reiterating and conjoining ideas into complex propositions, and (5) …

Nonresonant Multiphoton Ionization Of Alkaline Earth Atoms In Intense Laser Fields., Dal-Woo Kim Jan 1989

Nonresonant Multiphoton Ionization Of Alkaline Earth Atoms In Intense Laser Fields., Dal-Woo Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

When an atomic beam interacts with a high intensity laser beam, ionization occurs even if the photon energy is less than the threshold level for ionization of the atom. In this thesis, nonresonant multiphoton ionization of alkaline-earth atoms is examined experimentally. Since alkaline-earth atoms have doubly excited states just above and sometimes below the first ionization threshold level and are easily ionized with relatively low intensity, they are ideally suited for studying the role of electron correlations in multiphoton ionization. This motivated a careful and detailed investigation of the correlation of electrons and the multiphoton ionization mechanism. A spectroscopic study …

Agrobacterium Tumefaciens - Mediated Transfer Of Plant Dna For Gene Expression Analysis., Woo Sung Lee Jan 1989

Agrobacterium Tumefaciens - Mediated Transfer Of Plant Dna For Gene Expression Analysis., Woo Sung Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Agrobacterium tumefaciens causes crown gall tumor primarily in dicotyledonous plants. The infection mechanism reveals that a portion of bacterial DNA (T-DNA) is transferred into the plant nuclear genome. This transformation system is widely utilized in plant genetic engineering and plant molecular biology. In this dissertation, two experiments were carried out. First, the copy number, physical structure and F1 segregations of T-DNA copies were analyzed, attempting to understand the mode of T-DNA integration into the plant genome. While the mechanism of Agrobacterium response to plant signals and generation and transfer of T-DNA intermediates through actions of virulence genes is generally understood, …

The Impact Of Options Listing On The Information Content Of Annual Earnings Announcement., Tinwah Richard Lau Jan 1989

The Impact Of Options Listing On The Information Content Of Annual Earnings Announcement., Tinwah Richard Lau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine whether options listing induces additional information acquisition and processing and hence causes a commensurate reduction in the information content of annual earnings announcements. The U-statistic is used to measure the information content of annual earnings announcements. The dissertation tests the options listing effects on four different designs: (i) all exchange (NYSE/AMEX) firms, (ii) large exchange firms versus small exchange firms, (iii) positive unexpected earnings firms versus negative unexpected earnings firms, and (iv) all over-the-counter firms. The research found that, after options listing, the U-statistic of the exchange firms decreases significantly during the …

Genotype-By-Environment Interactions, Stability Across Environments, And Tolerance To Low Soil Fertility Of Wheat In Louisiana., Jalaluddin Jan 1989

Genotype-By-Environment Interactions, Stability Across Environments, And Tolerance To Low Soil Fertility Of Wheat In Louisiana., Jalaluddin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Genotypic stability of performance across environments in general, or across levels of a specific environmental factor in particular, is an important concern of plant breeders. The objectives of this research were to examine the relationships and repeatability of the commonly used stability statistics, the relative merits of these statistics in the stability analyses of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield and test weight, and the relationship of genotypic tolerance to low soil-fertility with yield stability. Yield and test weight data of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station (LAES) winter wheat performance trials from 37 year-location combinations were used in the stability analyses. …

Re-Inventing The Public Sphere: Critical Theory, Social Responsibility, Schools, And The Press., John Pace Konopak Jan 1989

Re-Inventing The Public Sphere: Critical Theory, Social Responsibility, Schools, And The Press., John Pace Konopak

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the contemporary discourses of journalism and pedagogy from the standpoint of critical theory to assess the impact of technocratic rationality and instrumental logic on the practices of communication and education. It is premised on the observation that, spurred by the imperatives of trans-national capital accumulation, privatization inimical to democratic interests has begun to colonize public education. The study represents an effort to reactivate a concept and rhetoric of "social responsibility" that would animate a project of reclaiming cultural space to be occupied by a "public sphere," in a struggle analagous to that waged against feudalism and monarchical …

Modeling Flat Flames Burning Chlorinated Methanes In A Methane/Air Environment., Gary Peyton Miller Jan 1989

Modeling Flat Flames Burning Chlorinated Methanes In A Methane/Air Environment., Gary Peyton Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A numerical model was developed to simulate flat flames burning chlorinated methanes in a methane/air environment. The model uses a reaction mechanism containing 341 reactions and 58 species. A time-stepping solution with linearized source terms and a strict convergence criteria had to be developed to allow for convergence of the conservation equations. Simulations of ten flames were made, five simulations of dichloromethane/methane/air flames, and five simulations of carbon tetrachloride/methane/air flames. For each fuel type, simulations were performed at a constant molar Cl/H ratio of 0.3 for a stoichiometric flame, a fuel-rich flame, and a fuel-lean flame. The other simulations were …

Gongora's "Soledades" As A Problem Of Language And Meaning In Seventeenth Century Spain., Ted Eustace Mcvay Jr Jan 1989

Gongora's "Soledades" As A Problem Of Language And Meaning In Seventeenth Century Spain., Ted Eustace Mcvay Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The exploration of the epistemological assumptions necessary for the interpretation of Luis de Gongora's "Soledades" is an area of critical attention that has gone virtually neglected since his 1927 "rehabilitation." This study offers an approach to understanding the long, difficult poem and the bitter critical reaction against it in the context of the seventeenth-century shift of predominant epistemologies discussed by Michel Foucault in The Order of Things. An approach that focuses on how the world is known is most appropriate to a study of the "Soledades" for several reasons, one being that those writers who attacked the poem did so …

Density Theorems For Reciprocity Equivalences., Thomas Carrere Palfrey Jan 1989

Density Theorems For Reciprocity Equivalences., Thomas Carrere Palfrey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The author studies reciprocity equivalence and the wild set of a reciprocity equivalence. He proves that if two algebraic number fields K and L are reciprocity equivalent then there exists a reciprocity equivalence between them with an infinite wild set. In particular, there always exists a self-equivalence with an infinite wild set on any algebraic number field. Even though a wild set of an equivalence can be infinite, he proves that its Dirichlet density is always zero. The structure of a reciprocity equivalence is examined. He proves that the bijection on primes determines the group isomorphism on global square classes …

An Examination Of The Effect Of Financial Risk On The Manager's Choice Of Accounting Methods., Linda Marie Nichols Jan 1989

An Examination Of The Effect Of Financial Risk On The Manager's Choice Of Accounting Methods., Linda Marie Nichols

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the effect of the firm's level of financial risk on management's preference for full-cost or successful-efforts accounting in the oil and gas industry. Agency theory predicts that firms with increasing levels of financial risk have an incentive to switch to an accounting method which tends to increase net tangible assets and which creates more stable earnings in order to avoid technical default on loan covenants. Therefore, it is expected that successful-efforts firms with increasing levels of financial risk will tend to switch to use the full-cost accounting method. Past studies have used leverage as a surrogate for …

Theories Of Economic Regulation And The Development Of The Doctrine Of "Conspiracies In Restraint Of Trade" In The Labor Market., Edd Sidney Noell Jan 1989

Theories Of Economic Regulation And The Development Of The Doctrine Of "Conspiracies In Restraint Of Trade" In The Labor Market., Edd Sidney Noell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the development of the doctrine of "conspiracies in restraint of trade" in the labor market by means of an application of two models of economic regulation. As heuristic devices, these models are utilized to explain the formation of English and American labor law in three different eras. The market failure model posits that labor market regulators seek to remedy unequal bargaining power and asymmetric information so as to achieve economic efficiency. This model's 'liberty and virtue' component emphasizes the normative end of character formation. According to the interest group model, organized labor …

A Catalyst For Change: The Libretti Of Jean -Philippe Rameau's 'Tragedies En Musique', (1733-1764)., Jonathan Philip Joseph Radvan Jan 1989

A Catalyst For Change: The Libretti Of Jean -Philippe Rameau's 'Tragedies En Musique', (1733-1764)., Jonathan Philip Joseph Radvan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Jean-Philippe Rameau was the most celebrated composer of opera and the foremost music theorist in eighteenth century France and great attention has justly been given to his musical and theoretical works, but there has been no corresponding study, such as this one, of the libretti of his operas, which depart from the precepts of neo-classical drama and reflect a new sentimental age. The librettists of the tragic operas of Rameau introduced many innovations to the tragic genre, hitherto forbidden by the rigid canons of neo-classicism. They were free to do so because opera was a relatively new genre which could …

Cognitive And Affective Outcomes Of Varying Levels Of Structured Collaboration In A Computer-Based Learning Environment., Judith Lavine Repman Jan 1989

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated cognitive and affective outcomes resulting from the use of varying levels of structured peer collaboration (unstructured, structured, and structured with training) in a computer-based learning environment. The study was designed to apply research findings showing a positive relationship between giving explanations and achievement into classroom practice. The sample consisted of 190 students enrolled in nine sections of seventh grade social studies at two middle schools in East Baton Rouge Parish, LA. The schools were selected because they contained large percentages of students at-risk of school failure. Intact classes were randomly assigned to receive one of the three …

Avian Influenza Viruses In Coastal Louisiana Waterfowl: Host And Environmental Factors Affecting Prevalence And Viral Persistence., David Edward Stallknecht Jan 1989

Avian Influenza Viruses In Coastal Louisiana Waterfowl: Host And Environmental Factors Affecting Prevalence And Viral Persistence., David Edward Stallknecht

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Cloacal and tracheal swabs were collected from 1,389 hunter-killed ducks in Cameron Parish, Louisiana during the 1986 and 1987 waterfowl seasons. These included 605 blue-winged teal (Anas discors), 75 mottled ducks (A. fulvigula), 375 gadwalls (A. strepera) and 334 green-winged teal (A. crecca). Twenty-eight avian influenza viruses (AIVs) were isolated. Prevalence estimates of AIV in ducks during September, November and December/January were 3.1%, 2.1%, and 0.4%, respectively. Differences in prevalence were detected by season ($P$ =.044) and age class ($P$ =.036). Two isolations from resident mottled ducks indicate local transmission of AIV on these wintering areas. Much subtype diversity was …

The Macroeconomic Effects Of Fiscal And Monetary Impulses And Of Financial Crisis In The United States During The Interwar Period., Prosper Raynold

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation employs vector autoregressive techniques to improve our empirical understanding of fiscal and monetary policy and the effects of financial crisis in the interwar period. The issues investigated include: (a) the validity of the Ricardian equivalence and debt monetization hypotheses; (b) the effect of changes in the money supply on output, prices, and interest rates; (c) the impact of changes in average marginal tax rates and government expenditures on the macroeconomy; and (d) the effects of disruptions in financial intermediation and deterioration in the quality of private balance sheets on the macroeconomy. Two vector autoregressive models are estimated and …

Floral Ontogeny Of Mimosoid Legumes., Jose Israel Ramirez-Domenech Jan 1989

Floral Ontogeny Of Mimosoid Legumes., Jose Israel Ramirez-Domenech

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Comparative floral ontogeny in mimosoid legumes was analyzed among representative genera in three major tribes Mimoseae, Acacieae and Ingeae. Details on floral and inflorescence ontogeny in one mimosoid species is described and illustrated for Mimosa strigillosa Torr. & Gray. Three features studied developmentally include: variation in number of parts, patterns of arrangement and inflorescence architecture. Suppression occurs along inflorescences that develop synchronously, when basal flowers are retarded. Tetramerous flowers are considered a reduction or suppression from basic pentamerous flower. Divergent patterns in order of sepal initiation and stamen initiation and proliferation are found during early ontogeny. Four patterns found in …

Rice Bran Stabilization By Improved Internal And External Heating Methods., Jiaxun Tao Jan 1989

Rice Bran Stabilization By Improved Internal And External Heating Methods., Jiaxun Tao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Rice bran stabilization was conducted by internal (microwave), external (oven drying and steam retorting) heating and non-heating ($\sp{60}$Co irradiation) treatments to improve currently used methods. Two commercial rice varieties cultivated in Louisiana, one long grain (Lemont) and a medium grain (Nato), were milled to collect bran samples. The bran was analyzed for its proximate composition and various physical and thermal characteristics. The proximate composition for long and medium grain bran, respectively, was: moisture, 11.2% and 10.8%; protein, 16.07% and 16.20%; fat, 19.20% and 21.97%; crude fiber, 8.49% and 8.41%; ash, 9.23% and 9.46%; and nitrogen-free extract, 47.01% and 44.07%.
