Since c.1860, the Paris Conservatoire has employed a succession of master artist/teachers of the silver Boehm flute. This tradition is so distinctive that the term "French Flute School" is used to refer to flute teachers and pupils of the Paris Conservatoire. Certain exponents of the French Flute School have written classic method books which have remained important to Boehm flute players throughout the world. The style and quality of flute literature changed significantly from the mid-nineteenth century to the present and when musical style changed so did demands on the performer. This dissertation is in two parts. The first part is a monograph which presents a history of the first fully professional orchestra in Miami. The Florida Philharmonic was founded in 1965 and ceased operations in 1982. Appendices provide lists of the programs which the orchestra performed. The second part is an original composition entitled Symphony No. 2. The marimba was ushered into the Western art world early this century. Thus, compositions written specifically for solo marimba are limited. One means of expanding the repertory is to transcribe for marimba. This study discusses the techniques of transcribing for solo marimba. It represents a synthesis of information drawn from examining, performing, and creating transcriptions for marimba. The introductory chapter covers related pertinent and prefatory topics such as a brief history of the marimba and its literature, the necessity for transcriptions, and the benefits and value of transcriptions and transcribing. This dissertation consists of two parts: an analysis of a composition entitled Enantiodromia by Greek composer Jani Christou as it relates to the general musical style of his late works, and an original composition by the author entitled Symphony No. 1 for full orchestra. The purpose of this study is to examine and discuss the traditional compositional elements in the pre-serial atonal music of Alban Berg. The dissertation is divided into eight chapters. Chapter One serves as an introduction, Chapters Two through Seven form the main body, and Chapter Eight contains a summary and conclusions. In the introductory chapter, the essential techniques for composing atonal music are described, as well as solutions to the problems of creating unity and cohesiveness without the organizational potential provided by tonality. The Development Of A Competency Based Approach For Teaching A College Level French Horn Techniques Course In A Homogeneous Setting., Kevin Michael Andry

The purpose of this study was to develop a competency-based approach to teaching a college-level horn techniques course in a homogeneous setting. Five students were taught horn techniques using the College Horn Techniques text written for the course. Students demonstrated the achievement of competency levels in three categories: cognitive, psychomotor, and pedagogical. Competencies were defined and explained in the text. Data were scores of four cognitive module quizzes, one cognitive final exam, a psychomotor performance exam, and two observation forms--Performance Evaluation Form and Pedagogical Evaluation Form. Additionally, an evaluation of the College Horn Techniques text was completed by each student. …
