In comparison with other percussion instruments, the marimba made a belated entrance into the musical world of the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine the history and development of the marimba ensemble in the United States and to determine its current status in collegiate percussion programs. This study begins by tracing the history of the marimba from its origins in Indonesia and Africa to its migration to the Americas during the early days of the slave trade. The purpose of this report was to formulate a methodical approach to the teaching of guitar skills needed for the effective use of the guitar by music educators and music therapists. In both these professions, the guitar is used in an accompanimental capacity and also is taught as an applied instrument. Presently, there is an ever-increasing supply of instruction books available which fulfill many different needs and explore various styles of guitar playing. Purpose of the Study. The purpose of this study was to determine the status of the public secondary school band programs in Louisiana for the 1984-1985 school year. Procedures. Data were gathered by means of questionnaires sent to the directors of all public high school band programs. Information sought was divided into three major sections: (1) Teacher Profile, (2) The Band Program, and (3) Finance and Budget. Responses were obtained from 51.7 percent of the total population, and the data were tabulated and presented with comparison of the findings. Findings. George Whitefield Chadwick was one of the most prominent composers in America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His organ works included didactic works called "studies," several short pieces, and two large concert works, both in variation form. These pieces are suitable for teaching, for service playing, and for recitals. The purpose of this study was to collect data on outreach, scholarship, and financial assistance programs of community schools of the arts. The National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, Inc. requires that organizations seeking full institutional membership offer scholarships and financial assistance programs for students. In addition, outreach program offerings are recommended and encouraged by the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, Inc. A questionnaire was mailed to one-hundred member schools of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, Inc. Sixty-four (64%) questionnaires were used in data analysis.
