The purpose of this study was to develop a programmed text to teach the subject of professional ethics to music therapy students and professional music therapists. This study was undertaken in response to a mandate from the National Association for Music Therapy requiring the inclusion of professional ethics in the undergraduate music therapy curriculum. Data from four surveys were utilized in the development of the text. For the first survey, a questionnaire was sent to all university music therapy directors in the United States. Harmonic dictation materials available in the Ear-Training Laboratory at Louisiana State University were programmed for computer presentation in order to observe the effects of the computer medium in comparison to the traditional laboratory approach. In accordance with the Solomon Four-Group Design, the sixty-two second-semester freshman music theory students were assigned randomly to computer and tape groups. Half of each group was assigned at random to take a pretest which was designed by the experimenter. After six withdrawals from the course, a total research population of fity-six students remained. The musical achievement of students taught from the Memphis Curriculum Guide, based on the Orff and Kodaly philosophies of music education, was compared to that achieved by students taught from the basic program outlined in the Exploring Music songbook series. Students were chosen from the fourth and fifth grades in the Weaverville Elementary Schools, Weaverville, North Carolina, and materials used were chosen for these grade levels. The Music Achievement Tests, Tests 1, 2, and 3, by Richard Colwell were used for comparison of pretest and posttest means for the experimental and control groups on both grade levels. In August 1967, the first doctoral degree in music at Louisiana State University was conferred. Between August 1967 and May 1981, the doctoral degree program in the School of Music at LSU has shown considerable growth, in both number of degrees awarded and curricular offerings. The focus of this study was the evaluation, in terms of quality and effectiveness, of the doctoral music degree program at LSU through an analysis of the responses of its doctoral graduates. A questionnaire was mailed to all sixty-four doctoral degree recipients. Fifty-eight (90.6%) returned usable questionnaires for the study. Items included in the questionnaire …

The purpose of this project was to develop a sequence of computer-assisted instruction programs in the area of music fundamentals designed for the non-music major in an elementary music methods class. First, the sequence of concepts was defined; secondly, specific programs needed to enhance the understanding of the concepts were defined. A Xitan Z-80 microcomputer, with 32 K and cassette bulk storage, Hitachi 12-inch CRT video monitor, and an ASCII keyboard were the hardware employed in programming. System software included BASIC and assembly language. Programs were then tested for accuracy and logic by sample runs, often revised, and finally stored …
