Purpose: To develop a process that can design an island block matrix that produces an intensity distribution (70-100%), which acceptably matches one planned for an intensity modulated (IM) bolus electron conformal therapy (ECT) patient. The intensity modulator concept is that electrons laterally scatter behind hexagonally-packed, small-diameter island blocks such that local intensity equals the fractional unblocked area.
Methods: A pencil beam algorithm (PBA) was used to calculate the modulated electron intensity created by varying diameter (d) of island blocks in a hexagonal array (separation r). Accuracy of the PBA model was assessed by comparing with Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. PBA …

The objective of this research was to determine differences in carcass evaluation, yield, and meat quality from representative fresh domestic (FSD), frozen domestic (FZD), and frozen imported Australian (FIA) goat carcass sides (n=30 from each source). The U.S. carcasses were split into sides and the right side frozen and stored for 6 weeks. Left sides were fabricated into standardized primal cuts. After frozen storage, right sides and FIA carcasses were thawed for 3 days at 4°C. Three experiments were conducted on the carcass traits and meat yields, quality differences in leg cut, and differences in loin and racks across freezing …

Histone H3K79 methylation has been shown to play roles in different DNA repair pathways. Histone H4 residues serine 64 to threonine 80 surround histone H3K79 residue. We have analyzed the effect of the mutations of the residues on UV sensitivity, H3K79 methylation, nucleotide excision repair, chromatin state and homologous recombination. We found that mutation of the residues 64 to 72 cause resistance to killing by UV whereas mutation of the residues 73 to 80 cause sensitivity to killing by UV compared to wild type. The use of beans in the human diet provides an excellent source of dietary fiber and has potential for lowering glycemic load. Prepared meals with high levels of dietary fiber and low glycemic loads were found to be rare in a market survey of nine stores with various price points in the greater Baton Rouge area. The majority of the prepared meals found fell into low or medium fiber categories with medium to high glycemic loads. This thesis presents an improved model for gas-liquid two-phase flow in churn and annular flow regimes for small- and large-diameter in vertical and near-vertical pipes. This new model assumes that a net liquid film moves upward along the pipe wall and gas phase moves upward, occupying the majority of the central part of the pipes, and forming a gas core, in both flow regimes. Approximately 2,300 petroleum platforms are currently operating in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), and are estimated to provide an additional 4 to 12 km2 of artificial reef habitat. The ecological role of platforms has often been overlooked and little is known about the effect of artificial light from the active platforms on surrounding fish communities. This is the first study to address the potential impacts of artificial light on the trophic ecology of fish communities surrounding offshore platforms through gut content (GCA) and stable isotope (SIA) analyses. Previous data suggest the metrical properties of a word may influence the time course of phonological encoding, particularly in adults who stutter. The purpose of the present study is to examine phonological and metrical encoding skills in fluent and non-fluent adults, in particular the medial stress-bearing vowel. Investigators used a silent phoneme monitoring paradigm to assess reaction times for all phonemes within nonword CVCCVC stimuli. This paradigm required participants to manually identify target phonemes within a nonword to further isolate the level of phonological encoding from other processes. Iron-sulfur ([Fe-S]) proteins are widely distributed in the biological systems. These proteins are involved in diverse fundamental life processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, ribosome biogenesis, DNA synthesis, and repair. Dysfunction of these proteins or their biogenesis has been implicated in causing cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and various cancers. Iron-sulfur proteins are highly sensitive to nitric oxide (NO) and readily form dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) upon exposure. Restoration of the iron-sulfur cluster in the NO-modified protein requires a two-step repair process. The first step is to remove DNICs from proteins. The second step is to re-assemble the iron-sulfur cluster in proteins. …

This report presents the reliability-based analysis of the calibration of resistance factors for the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of axially loaded drilled shafts. AASHTO’s 2012 LRFD Bridge Design Specifications recommends various resistance factors for the design of deep foundations; however, since these values are not specific to any one region, they are very conservative. For Louisiana or Mississippi, the adoption of such recommended resistance factors could substantially increase foundation sizes. In view of its mountainous terrain, peninsular shape, and status as an agglomeration of formerly separate landmasses, the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia, presents a fertile opportunity for examining biogeographical processes. Previous work on Sulawesi primates and amphibians suggested the existence of distinct areas of endemism (AoEs), but the relevance of these zones to a broader set of taxa has not been widely investigated, nor the reasons for their existence fully explored. Here, we use population genetic analyses of the endemic Sulawesi shrew, Crocidura elongata, to assess biogeographical partitioning according to the putative AoEs. Strobilurin fungicide resistance threatens rice production in southwestern Louisiana. Strobilurins are the often relied upon method of managing sheath blight development due to the lack of strong genetic resistance to this disease in the currently available rice germplasm. However, isolates of Rhizoctonia solani AG 1-IA causing sheath blight were reported resistant to azoxystrobin near Mowata, LA in 2011. To determine the geographic distribution and severity of azoxystrobin resistance, 40 commercial rice fields in southwestern Louisiana were sampled for isolates of R. solani. Inspection and rework are two important issues of quality control. In this research, an N-stage flowline is considered to make decisions on these two issues. When defective items are detected at the inspection station the items are either scrapped or reworked. A reworkable item may be repaired at the regular defect-creating workstation or at a dedicated off-line rework station. These operations are often called windowed image computations (or neighborhood operations). In this thesis, we examine the implementation of a windowed computation pipeline in an FPGA-based environment. Minority populations often have more negative attitudes toward the police than their White counterparts. This study explored the differences between Black college students’ attitudes towards the police in comparison to White college students. Using a sample of 1,108 students from a traditional flagship university and a Historically Black College University, the study sought to seek out differences in attitudes toward the police based on race, social work student status, and university history. Results indicated a significant difference between Black students’ attitudes toward the police when compared with their White student counterparts. Considerable attention has been given to the measureable differences that exist between different human populations in the size and shape of the pelvis, with Africans having a narrower pelvis than Europeans. By collecting data on sacral breadth from a South African skeletal population, this study (1) tests the hypothesis that African blacks possess a narrower sacrum, and by inference pelvis, than whites and (2) considers whether the size variation between blacks and whites is due to nutritional, historical and social differences, to a genetic basis related to climatic adaptation, or to both. High sodium intake has negative health implications on hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Brines used in chicken marination are composed of salt (NaCl), phosphates and seasonings. Potassium chloride (KCl) is the most common sodium replacer but its use is typically limited to less than 50% substitution due to its undesirable bitterness and metallic aftertaste. Patterns from hurricane damage give an indication that longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) is more windfirm than loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). Tree windfirmess has been attributed to many factors including species and material properties like wood strength and stiffness. Because longleaf pine wood is stronger and stiffer than loblolly pine wood, this study used static winching methodology to see if these properties account for differences in windfirmness by measuring bending force required to break stems (MMAX). Lignocellulosic biomass is a promising renewable resource for the production of biofuels and biochemicals. Energycane is considered a lignocellulosic biomass characterized by its high fiber content and cold tolerance. It can be planted on marginal land and does not need to compete with the food supply. Wet storage in combination with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or white-rot fungi was applied to energycane bagasse to preserve the lignocellulosic polymeric sugars (cellulose and hemicellulose) during short-term storage (60 days) and to make them accessible for conversion into biofuels and biochemicals. We present a framework for a recommender system for the Louisiana Poverty Initiative that identifies member organizations with common causes and aims to forge connections between these organizations. Our framework employs a combination of graph and text analyses of the organizations' Facebook pages. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practical adequacy of Duke’s (1994) rehearsal frame model as a “middle ground” perspective sequential outline of rehearsal events that lead to positive musical change. Observation and video recording of three accomplished high school band directors’ rehearsals generated data that allowed for a comparison between the model and actual practice.
