Characterization Of The Common Eland (Taurotragus Oryx) Estrous Cycle, Parker M. Pennington Jan 2009

Characterization Of The Common Eland (Taurotragus Oryx) Estrous Cycle, Parker M. Pennington

LSU Master's Theses

Three oryx species and nine of eighteen antelope species across three tribes are considered endangered by the IUCN. Though the common eland (Taurotragus oryx) is not endangered, it lends itself well to the adaption of domestic assisted reproductive techniques due to its large size and calm temperament (Hansen et al., 1985). For these techniques to be used efficiently however, the details of the estrous cycle need to be defined within this and other species. Previously, Nowak (1999) proposed the eland estrous cycle to be ~21 days. In addition to cycle length, specifics of the estrous cycle have yet to be …

LSU Master's Theses

I took a journey home to Western New York and turned the camera’s lens on both my family and myself.

This thesis is a story about my family and me. I photographed my family to confront the tragic car accident that took my brother’s life and my mom’s sanity. I also acknowledged the present state of my family with these photographs by exploring the root of many of my fears and anxieties that stem from the tense and stressful atmosphere within my home as a result of this car accident.

Power Capabilities And Similarity Of Interests: A Test Of The Power Transition Theory, Garrett Alan Heckman Jan 2009

Power Capabilities And Similarity Of Interests: A Test Of The Power Transition Theory, Garrett Alan Heckman

LSU Master's Theses

The study of major power conflict frequently focuses on the role of the distribution of capabilities. Power transition theory argues that when the dominant state in the international system is overtaken in power capabililities by a dissatisfied challenger, the likelihood of conflict increases significantly. Despite theoretical and empirical support for the power transition theory, it neglects the possibility of increasing power capabilities externally. Alliances and other third parties may enter into a conflict on one side or the other, or remain neutral. A state will necessarily consider the likely actions of other parties before choosing to initiate conflict against its …

Prioritization Of Safety Countermeasures For The State Of Louisiana Using Fuzzy Inference Systems, Meisam Akbarzadeh Jan 2009

Prioritization Of Safety Countermeasures For The State Of Louisiana Using Fuzzy Inference Systems, Meisam Akbarzadeh

LSU Master's Theses

In this study a fuzzy inference system is proposed for prioritization of countermeasures aimed at improving safety in the state of Louisiana. Countermeasures are prioritized based on their collective performance on cost, expected crash reduction and the severity of the problem they address. These three decision parameters can have six permutations in terms of their relative importance in decision making. In order to make the prioritization procedure handier for decision makers, the inference system is capable of being run under all six possible cases. Current safety standards influence the importance attached to crash reduction performance and severity of the problem …

Comparisons Of Boosted Regression Tree, Glm And Gam Performance In The Standardization Of Yellowfin Tuna Catch-Rate Data From The Gulf Of Mexico Lonline [Sic] Fishery, Shane Abeare

LSU Master's Theses

Recent advances in statistical understanding have focused fisheries research attention on addressing the theoretical and statistical issues encountered in standardizing catch-rate data. Similarly, the present study evaluates the performance of boosted regression trees (BRT), the product of recent progress in machine learning technology, as a potential tool for catch-rate standardization. The BRT method provides a number of advantages over the traditional GLM and GAM approaches including, but not limited to: robust parameter estimates as a result of the integrated stochastic gradient boosting algorithm; model structure learned from data and not determined a priori, thereby avoiding assumptions required for model specification; …

A Decision Making Framework For Hurricane Evacuation And Sheltering, Jason Fennell Jan 2009

A Decision Making Framework For Hurricane Evacuation And Sheltering, Jason Fennell

LSU Master's Theses

There are few tools currently available to emergency managers to assist in making decisions about whether to evacuate, shelter locally, or shelter-in-place, and none of these tools explicitly consider risk to life safety. A methodology was developed to provide risk-based guidance for evacuation versus sheltering decision making. The hurricane hazards considered in the developed methodology are high winds, storm surge flooding and waves, and rainfall flooding. Vulnerability of buildings to these hazards and the associated risks to life safety are then determined. These results are compared to the hazards and risks associated with evacuation, particularly for medical special needs populations …

Do Laminated Sediment-Gravity-Flow Deposits On The Antarctic Peninsula Continental Shelf Record Ice Sheet Grounding Events?, Vincent Clyde Adams Jan 2009

Do Laminated Sediment-Gravity-Flow Deposits On The Antarctic Peninsula Continental Shelf Record Ice Sheet Grounding Events?, Vincent Clyde Adams

LSU Master's Theses

Barker and Camerlenghi (2002) proposed that drifts on the continental rise of the Antarctic Peninsula may record a high-resolution record of ice-sheet expansions on the adjacent continental shelf. In their view, laminated sediments were deposited during glacial periods, whereas during interglacial periods, sediment supply to drifts was negligible. As a consequence of low sediment supply, the tops of laminated sequences were bioturbated. Therefore, a bioturbated-laiminated couplet should represent a complete glacial cycle. Bioturbated and laminated (B-L) sediment couplets were compiled from cores at two drift sites obtained from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 178 Sites 1095, 1096, and 1101. If …

Supporting Decision Making In A Complex World, Jonathan Tall Jan 2009

Supporting Decision Making In A Complex World, Jonathan Tall

LSU Master's Theses

Recent research has questioned whether explicit thinking is necessary or even useful for complex decision making (Gladwell, 2005; Dijksterhuis & Nordgren, 2006; Newell, Wong, Cheung, & Rakow, in press). The present research approaches this issue by examining how different types of decision support facilitate/hinder performance in a diagnostic medical task. The results from 3 experiments indicate that providing an external memory aid improves performance in complex tasks. Additional support in the form of a coding procedure improved awareness of the magnitude of drug effects, but did not improve detection of negative side effects. The results suggest that while performance is …

Characterization Of Endoreplicated Nuclei In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Rasheed A. Ahmad Jan 2009

Characterization Of Endoreplicated Nuclei In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Rasheed A. Ahmad

LSU Master's Theses

A model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, duplicates its chromosomes without cell division, in a process known as endoreplication. The primary objective of this study was to identify genes and proteins that specifically accumulate in endoreplicated nuclei in Arabidopsis thaliana. Analysis of nuclei sorted by fluorescent activated cell sorter (FACS) revealed that ploidy levels and nuclear volume were positively correlated. However, the protein amounts among 2C, 4C, and 8C nuclei had no significant differences. This indicated a decrease of the protein concentration in endoreplicated nuclei. In contrast, the RNA amount in the 8C nuclei was 1.3- and 1.4-fold higher than that in …

Reflections On Pleasure: The Fourteenth-Century Alhambra, Amanda Sharon Foret Jan 2009

Reflections On Pleasure: The Fourteenth-Century Alhambra, Amanda Sharon Foret

LSU Master's Theses

The Nasrids were the last Islamic power on the Iberian Peninsula. They created a place of luxury and wealth in their hilltop fortress, the Alhambra, which is one of the best-preserved examples of medieval Islamic palace architecture. It was transformed in the thirteenth century into a palace-city and during most of its early history housed the most important figure in an Islamic society, the sultan. The Alhambra displays bare, natural elements on the exterior, while the interior mimics and references these natural elements in a grander fashion with gardens, fountains, beautiful vistas, sculpted porticos and lavish rooms. These interior spaces …

Objectives – To compare compression pressure (CP) of 6.5mm Acutrak Plus (AP) and 4.5mm AO cortical screws (AO) when placed in simulated lateral condylar fractures of variable thickness in cadaveric equine third metacarpal (MC3) bones, and to compare pullout force and strength of AP and AO screws when placed in a synthetic bone substitute. Results – The AO screw configurations generated significantly greater compressive pressure compared to the AP configurations. The ratio of mean CP for AP screws to AO screws at 20, 12, and 8-mm, were 21.6%, 26.2%, and 34.2% respectively. For the pullout study, the AP constructs generated …

Asynchronous Replication Of Metadata Across Multi-Master Servers In Distributed Data Storage Systems, Ismail Akturk Jan 2009

Asynchronous Replication Of Metadata Across Multi-Master Servers In Distributed Data Storage Systems, Ismail Akturk

LSU Master's Theses

In recent years, scientific applications have become increasingly data intensive. The increase in the size of data generated by scientific applications necessitates collaboration and sharing data among the nation's education and research institutions. To address this, distributed storage systems spanning multiple institutions over wide area networks have been developed. One of the important features of distributed storage systems is providing global unified name space across all participating institutions, which enables easy data sharing without the knowledge of actual physical location of data. This feature depends on the ``location metadata'' of all data sets in the system being available to all …

Modeling Gag Grouper (Mycteroperca Microlepis) In The Gulf Of Mexico: Exploring The Impact Of Marine Reserves On The Population Dynamics Of A Protogynous Grouper, Robert D. Ellis Jan 2009

Modeling Gag Grouper (Mycteroperca Microlepis) In The Gulf Of Mexico: Exploring The Impact Of Marine Reserves On The Population Dynamics Of A Protogynous Grouper, Robert D. Ellis

LSU Master's Theses

The gag grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis) population in the Gulf of Mexico supports both a commercial and recreational fishery but has experienced a decrease in the male to female sex ratio over the past thirty years. Protogynous fish populations naturally have a smaller male to female ratio than gonochoristic fish populations; however the decline in the gag population is such that sperm limitation may be occurring. In an effort to correct the decline in sex ratio, fishery managers have recently implemented two marine reserves designed specifically to protect gag spawning aggregations. Results from two population models (an age-structured model and an …

The Plame Game: Framing A Political Scandal, Misty Dawn Albrecht Jan 2009

The Plame Game: Framing A Political Scandal, Misty Dawn Albrecht

LSU Master's Theses

The media play an important role in society. They interpret political events, actions, policies, and scandals in a manner that citizens can understand. The media use frames to assist in interpretations and descriptions. They may create their own frames or use frames supplied by the political elites. Frames can also lead to biased coverage when used to omit details or present someone in a favorable or unfavorable manner. This study examines the frames the media used during the coverage of President George W. Bush’s first political scandal, the “Plame Game.” On July 14, 2003, Robert Novak exposed the identity of …

Everyday, Jill Tucker Moore Jan 2009

Everyday, Jill Tucker Moore

LSU Master's Theses

In our everyday lives we are bombarded with thousands, even millions, of images. Suffering information overload, we filter out the vast majority of these impressions – the person we pass on the street or sitting in the car next to us at a stop light. We only ‘see’ those people, places and things that ‘matter’, all else becomes ‘noise’; filtered into the background of consciousness – vaguely familiar, yet simultaneously foreign, creating a ‘manageable paradigm’ or construct of the world we inhabit. I take photographic portraits every day. Not of the ‘important’ in my life, but the nondescript, often overlooked …

Intellectual Ability In Children With Anxiety: A Replication And Exploration Of The Differences, Melissa S. Munson Jan 2009

Intellectual Ability In Children With Anxiety: A Replication And Exploration Of The Differences, Melissa S. Munson

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of anxiety on the intellectual functioning of children. Specifically, the current researchers sought to replicate previous findings that children with higher levels of anxiety have significantly lower scores on tests of intelligence. A second goal was to examine possible reasons for these deficits, including possible deficits in working memory and/or attention. Participants were divided into two groups with high and low anxiety, based on a self-report measure, though none of the children reported clinically problematic anxiety. The participants were 19 children (10 males, 9 females) who were recruited from the …

Secure Distributed Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks Via Encryption Of Sensor Decisions, Venkata Sriram Siddhardh Nadendla Jan 2009

Secure Distributed Detection In Wireless Sensor Networks Via Encryption Of Sensor Decisions, Venkata Sriram Siddhardh Nadendla

LSU Master's Theses

We consider the problem of binary hypothesis testing using a distributed wireless sensor network. Identical binary quantizers are used on the sensor's observations and the outputs are encrypted using a probabilistic cipher. The third party (enemy) fusion centers are unaware of the presence of the probabilistic encipher. We find the optimal (minimum-probability-of-error) fusion rule for the ally (friendly) fusion center subject to a lower bound on the the probability of error for the third-party fusion centers. To obtain the minimum probability of error, we first prove the quasi-convexity of error probability with respect to the sensor's threshold for a given …

The Direction We Grow, Reid Willis Jan 2009

The Direction We Grow, Reid Willis

LSU Master's Theses

The Direction We Grow is a composition for orchestra, solo soprano, and choir. It is a summation of the compositional knowledge I’ve accumulated throughout my undergraduate and graduate programs at LSU. The piece reflects my compositional style, which is characterized by rich melody and complex rhythm. With sweeping melodic motives, climactic builds, and percussive coloration, the piece incorporates characteristics of the Classical, Romantic, and Impressionistic musical periods. The piece is palindromic in structure. It builds upon a simple, celestial one-note motive and introduces new melodic patterns until it finally morphs into a steady, percussive section. The section builds to a …
