"Can You Tell Me Who My People Are?" Ethnic Identity Among The Hispanic-Indian People Of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Mary B. Van Rheenen Aug 1987

"Can You Tell Me Who My People Are?" Ethnic Identity Among The Hispanic-Indian People Of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Mary B. Van Rheenen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the puzzle of ethnic identity for the Hispanic-Indian people of Sabine Parish. Because their unique history precludes the clear-cut ethnic identification available to immigrant American groups, the community shares the awkward social position of both the remnant Native American groups and mixed-blood communities collectively known as American Isolates. The issue of group identity for members of the Zwolle-Ebarb community has been further confounded by the internal and external stigmas attached to aspects of the group's origins as well as the negative image associated with the group's home territory. After the people have been identified historically and genealogically, …

Floating Marshes In Louisiana: Substrate And Hydrolic Characterization, Christopher M. Swarzenski Aug 1987

Floating Marshes In Louisiana: Substrate And Hydrolic Characterization, Christopher M. Swarzenski

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Substrate characteristics and vertical mat movement were determined for maidencane (Panicum hemitomon), bulltongue(Sagittaria falcata) and wire-grass (Spartina patens) dominated marshes located progressively closer to the Gulf of Mexico in Barataria Basin, Louisiana, at Lake Boeuf, Lake Salvador and Bayou des Rigolettes, respectively. The near-surface substrate of the marshes at Lake Boeuf and Lake Salvador was characterized by high mean organic matter content (> 90%, >80%, gig dry weight x 100) and low mean mineral densities (0.007, 0.013 glee) respectively. Mean dry bulk density at these two marshes was low (0.065, 0.068 glee, respectively). Mean dry bulk densities were highest at …

Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages From Mexican Continental Shelves, Maria De La Luz Mata Apr 1987

Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages From Mexican Continental Shelves, Maria De La Luz Mata

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The recent benthic foraminifera 1 fauna of the continental margins of Mexico (Gulf of Campeche and Gulf of Tehuantepec) was studied. Surficial sediment samples (lOcc) were collected using a Shipeck dredge and were stained with Sudan Black "B" in order to differentiate the living fauna from the death assemblage. In the 41 samples from the Gulf of Campeche, 279 species were found in the total assemblage in water depths ranging from 9 to 586 m. In the 22 samples in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, 132 species were identified from the total assemblage in water depths of 20 to 180 m. …

The Relation Between Selected Student Characteristics And Activity Patterns In A Required High School Physical Education Class., Karen Martha Greenockle

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study described the activity patterns of students in a high school fitness class and explored the structural relations between particular student characteristics and their coded exercise behavior. Exercise behavior was systematically coded during an 8-week jogging unit in 10 high school physical education classes. Additional measures of distance covered, heart rate, perceived exertion, percent of days participated, and fitness level were also collected. Although percent of time spent jogging was low (18%), with no significant gains made in cardiovascular fitness, the amount of time spent jogging, the distance covered, and fitness level were all significantly correlated (r $>$.48, …

Planning And Interactive Decision-Making In Expert Elementary Physical Education Teachers., Deborah J. Howell Jan 1987

Planning And Interactive Decision-Making In Expert Elementary Physical Education Teachers., Deborah J. Howell

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This paper describes the planning and interactive decision making used by expert elementary physical education teachers as they developed and taught a 5 day unit on basketball dribbling. Secondly, it explores the relation between teachers' planning productivity (number of statements made) and student achievement. Expert elementary physical education teachers (N = 11) provided information regarding their thought processes during planning and interactive decision making. Planning sessions were conducted prior to each lesson with teachers using the "think aloud" technique. All instructional lessons were videotaped. Following each of the first three lessons, teachers were shown a videotape of the lesson and …

The Relation Between Daily Stress And Health., Glenn Neil Jones Jan 1987

The Relation Between Daily Stress And Health., Glenn Neil Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The role of stress in the development and exacerbation of physical symptoms has long been a topic of interest. The present investigation attempted to establish if there is an association between the irritants and demands of everyday life--termed minor stressors--and health. In order to investigate the influence of minor stressors on health, it appears necessary (for a number of reasons discussed in the text) to account for the influence of major life events on health and on minor stressors. Both major and minor stressful events were assessed using two approaches: simple frequency counts, and a subjective weighting approach which attempts …

High Energy Proton-Emulsion Nucleus Interactions., Louis Matthew Barbier Jan 1987

High Energy Proton-Emulsion Nucleus Interactions., Louis Matthew Barbier

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This paper presents the results of an experiment in which nuclear emulsions were exposed to the 800 GeV proton beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This is the highest energy proton beam presently available for a fixed target experiment. This research provides a systematic, high statistics study of proton-nucleus interactions and yields new information on multiplicities, target fragmentation, and particle correlations. The results are used to evaluate theoretical particle production models. Extrapolations to nucleus-nucleus collisions are made on the basis of these models. Both single particle and two particle distributions have been analyzed. The multiplicity distribution of produced particles can …

An Experimental Investigation Into Carbon-Dioxide-Induced Organic Deposition., Josh Chia-Hsine Fu Jan 1987

An Experimental Investigation Into Carbon-Dioxide-Induced Organic Deposition., Josh Chia-Hsine Fu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Wettability change (or a relative permeability effect) has long been considered a mechanism for enhanced oil recovery. Reports show that adsorption of petroleum heavy ends, mainly asphaltenes and resins, onto a rock surface can alter its wettability. Reports also show that high concentrations of CO$\sb2$ will induce the formation of a solid phase in CO$\sb2$/crude mixtures. However, the propensity of a reservoir system for CO$\sb2$-induced hydrocarbon precipitation and how this deposition affects the rock wettability has not been yet investigated. Once variables such as oil composition, pressure, temperature, brine chemistry, and surface mineralogy are adequately defined it becomes possible to …

The Danish Cadastral Survey Of St. Croix, 1733-1754 (Virgin Islands)., Daniel Price Hopkins Jan 1987

The Danish Cadastral Survey Of St. Croix, 1733-1754 (Virgin Islands)., Daniel Price Hopkins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents the history of the original cadastral survey of St. Croix by the Danish West India and Guinea Company in the early eighteenth century. St. Croix, the largest of the United States Virgin Islands, is distinguished by a remarkably regular and rectangular pattern of roads and properties, which appears to have had no parallel in the Lesser Antilles or Denmark. This is a case study of how colonial administrators approached the problem of the orderly alienation and demarcation of previously undivided land. The study is based mainly on original manuscript Company records in the Danish State Archive in …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Cobalt(Ii) Thiolates And Cobalt(Ii) - Substituted Metallothioneins., Barbara Ann Dixon Jan 1987

Spectroscopic Studies Of Cobalt(Ii) Thiolates And Cobalt(Ii) - Substituted Metallothioneins., Barbara Ann Dixon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Metallothioneins (MT) are widely occurring proteins characterized by low molecular weights and extremely high metal and sulfur content. Mammalian forms usually contain seven diamagnetic metal ions such as Zn(II) and/or Cd(II) and 20 cysteine residues. An understanding of the physiological role(s) of MT requires the elucidation of the nature and type of metal clusters, and the mechanism of assembly in MT. The stepwise incorporation of Co(II) ions into apo-metallothionein-2 from rabbit liver has been monitored by UV-visible absorption, low temperature magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), and EPR spectroscopies. Interpretation of the results has been facilitated by parallel spectroscopic studies of synthetic …

Ray Theoretical Traveltime Inversion Of Seismic Data In Two-Dimensional Plane Dipping Layers., Yeadong Kim Jan 1987

Ray Theoretical Traveltime Inversion Of Seismic Data In Two-Dimensional Plane Dipping Layers., Yeadong Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A ray theoretical traveltime inversion method in two dimensional arbitrarily dipping layers has been developed and applied to synthetic and real field data. The method is based on Durbaum's formula and may be applied to single-fold as well as CMP raw data. The advantage of Durbaum's formula is that we can estimate dipping angles as well as accurate velocities in dipping layers. In addition, the number of traces which can be utilized for velocity estimations is drastically increased. Also, a statistical method can be used to estimate normal incident times (t$\sb{\rm o}$) and the take-off angles at the surface (B$\sb{\rm …

An Economic And Statistical Analysis Of Selected Structural Characteristics Of Louisiana Agricultural Sector And Its Impact On Resource Situations., Stephen Leong Jan 1987

An Economic And Statistical Analysis Of Selected Structural Characteristics Of Louisiana Agricultural Sector And Its Impact On Resource Situations., Stephen Leong

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study focuses on the importance of structural change in the farm sector and its interactive relationship with the nonfarm sector. This relationship was exemplified through an overview and trend analysis of the structural change and resource adjustments that have occurred in the farming areas in Louisiana between 1959 and 1982. Extrapolative forecasting techniques, such as trend extrapolation, Markov Process, negative exponential and age cohort analysis, were used to project changes in farm numbers to the year 2000. The results show declining farm numbers and the continuation of present trends. Large and medium size farms will increase while small and …

Numerical simulation plays an important role in the design, analysis and fabrication of semiconductor devices. In this work, a computer program is developed to obtain a one-dimensional steady-state constant temperature current-voltage characteristics of diodes and bipolar transistors fabricated from materials having position dependent material properties such as band-gap, electron affinity, permittivity and the density of states functions. The general formulation of the problem allows for an unambiguous choice of reference potential. The modular form of the program allows for the choice of appropriate recombination processes for each of the materials used in the structure. The program can adjust the step …

Three-Dimensional Turbulent Flowfield In A Turbine Stirred Tank., Sheng-Yang Ju Jan 1987

Three-Dimensional Turbulent Flowfield In A Turbine Stirred Tank., Sheng-Yang Ju

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Solutions of conservation equations for the three-dimensional turbulent flowfield in agitated vessels were developed. Results showed that the Navier-Stokes equations with the nonisotropic k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model described the three-dimensional velocity profiles and turbulence kinetic energy and its dissipation rate for the flowfield. The nonisotropic model considered the rotational effect on turbulence with a turbulent-Richardson-number term and accounted for the important baffling effects through the nonisotropy of the viscosity. The solutions were validated with the experimental data for velocities and turbulence parameters. An isotropic k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model for rotational flow was also used. This modified isotropic k-$\varepsilon$ model proved to be …

Malaysian Prawn (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii) Production Studies In Polyculture Schemes With Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus)., Mark Steven Lamon Jan 1987

Malaysian Prawn (Macrobrachium Rosenbergii) Production Studies In Polyculture Schemes With Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus)., Mark Steven Lamon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three Malaysian prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii)/channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) polyculture studies were conducted from May 1984 through October 1986. In the first study prawn stocking size and density on catfish and prawn production were examined. In 1984 catfish, x = 24 g, were stocked at 9,884/ha. Prawns, x = 0.04 g, were stocked at 4,942, 9,884 and 14,826/ha. After 144 days catfish average weights, survival and yields were $<$340 g, $<$78% and $<$2,000 kg/ha, respectively. Prawn weight, survival and yields ranged from 34-54 g, 47-61% and 165-344 kg/ha, respectively. In 1985 catfish, x = 33 g, were stocked at 7,410/ha and prawns, x = 0.15 and 0.70 g, were stocked at 1984 densities. After 137 days catfish average weight, survival and yields were 427 g, 86% and 2,726 kg/ha, respectively. Prawn weight, survival and yields ranged from 48-73 g, 41-88% and 110-471 kg/ha, respectively. Positive economic net returns were achieved with 0.15 g prawns stocked at 14,826/ha and 0.70 g prawns stocked at 9,884 or 14,826/ha. In a second study prawn bottom location preference and movement were determined in ponds. Males were more frequently observed in the deep ends of ponds and near the ponds' perimeters, and females were observed more frequently in the shallow ends and in the middles of ponds. Prawn movement did not differ between day and night, averaging 1.1 m/hr. Two-funnel crawfish traps and box traps with slit entrances, 12 and 24 hr set times, and white light and commercial crawfish bait attractants were evaluated for capturing prawns. Traps were not effective at capturing prawns regardless of set time or attractant. In the third study catfish and prawn mean lengths and weights from cast-netted and seined samples were compared to a complete population census taken after 48, 92 and 139 days of growth. Ponds were stocked with catfish at 7,410/ha and prawns at 1984 study levels. Cast-netted samples under-estimated and seined samples over-estimated catfish size. Cast-netted and seined sample prawn means did not differ from each other or population parameters. Catfish and prawn size variation increased over time. Catfish and prawn survival decreased during the first 48 days and then remained constant throughout the rest of the grow-out period.

The Effects Of Semantic Mapping Instruction On The Text-External Inferences Of College Developmental Readers., Debbie Guice Longman Jan 1987

The Effects Of Semantic Mapping Instruction On The Text-External Inferences Of College Developmental Readers., Debbie Guice Longman

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In reading, text-external inferences are made when the reader integrates schemata with text information. Because inference generation occurs within the reader, background knowledge and reading skill affect inferential comprehension. This research consists of two studies to determine, first, whether college developmental and non-developmental readers activate prior knowledge when reading and making inferences (Experiment One) and, second, if direct instruction in semantic mapping increases activation of prior knowledge by developmental readers. The results of Experiment One indicated non-developmental readers with high prior knowledge use prior knowledge more than developmental subjects and that developmental subjects with high prior knowledge use that knowledge …

Applications Of Silicon Compounds In The Synthesis Of Insect Pheromone Analogs., Oanh Thi Vu Nguyen Jan 1987

Applications Of Silicon Compounds In The Synthesis Of Insect Pheromone Analogs., Oanh Thi Vu Nguyen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pheromones are highly active chemical messengers which are secreted by a member of an animal species and elicit a definite behavior in other members of the same species. The study of insect pheromones has recently attracted great attention because of their purely scientific interest and their favorable prospects for the control of pest insects. The study in this dissertation aims at the elucidation of some important aspects of the mechanism of perception of insect pheromones, which is based on the fact that the cyclic analogs of the natural pheromone have partially fixed conformations, whereas the straight-chain natural pheromone is more …

Resort Evolution Along The Gulf Of Mexico Littoral: Historical, Morphological, And Environmental Aspects., Klaus J. Meyer-Arendt Jan 1987

Resort Evolution Along The Gulf Of Mexico Littoral: Historical, Morphological, And Environmental Aspects., Klaus J. Meyer-Arendt

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The development histories of eight coastal resorts along the Gulf of Mexico littoral (Fort Myers Beach, Pensacola Beach, Dauphin Island, Grand Isle, Galveston Island, South Padre Island, Tecolutia, and Progreso) are documented to evaluate variability of temporal, spatial, and environmental aspects of resort development. Temporally, a modified S-curve model of resort evolution is offered to describe the historical development of seaside resorts, and stages of exploration, infrastructural development, and settlement expansion precede each resort's levelling off stage. The upper level of development, or level of maturation, varies among the sites, primarily as a function of demand. Resorts in high demand …

A hierarchical control structure was used. Free standing implementations of a cell controller, a workstation controller, and programmable device interfaces were designed. The system is data driven, and was designed to use the manufacturing databases that exist in the computer integrated manufacturing environment. Operation of the cell controller and its interaction with the rest of the system was demonstrated in real-time by simulating the computer integrated manufacturing environment on …

Salinity Effects On The Development And Larval Tolerance Of Five Species Of Echinoderms., Richard Allen Roller Jan 1987

Salinity Effects On The Development And Larval Tolerance Of Five Species Of Echinoderms., Richard Allen Roller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Salinity effects on the developmental rates, larval tolerances and various metabolic processes of five species of echinoderms were investigated. Development of Lytechinus variegatus (Lamarck), Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O. F. Muller, 1776), Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Stimpson, 1857), Strongylocentrotus pallidus (G. O. Sars, 1871), and Pisaster ochraceus (Brandt, 1835) larvae were observed. Developmental rates and larval survival to metamorphosis of S. droebachiensis and S. pallidus varied directly with salinity and were well within the observed salinity tolerance and distributional limits for the adults. For each species, embryos and larvae at lower salinities (20, 22.5, and $25\sp{o}\!/\!\sb{oo})$ tended to develop more slowly than those at …

Regulation Of Dextransucrase Secretion By Proton Motive Force In Leuconostoc Mesenteroides., David Roland Otts Jan 1987

Regulation Of Dextransucrase Secretion By Proton Motive Force In Leuconostoc Mesenteroides., David Roland Otts

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between proton motive force and the secretion of the enzyme dextransucrase (E.C. 2.4.1.5) in Leuconostoc mesenteroides was investigated. The transmembrane pH gradient was determined by measurement of the uptake of radiolabeled benzoate or methylamine while the membrane potential was determined by measurement of the uptake of radiolabeled tetraphenylphosphonium bromide. Leuconostoc mesenteroides was able to maintain a constant proton motive force of $-130$ mV when grown in fermenters at constant pH while a value of $-140$ mV was determined from concentrated cell suspensions. The contribution of the membrane potential and transmembrane pH gradient to the proton motive force varied …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The first experimental observation of laser induced fluorescence from the furan cation, C$\sb4$H$\sb4$O$\sp+$, is reported. The ion is formed in a supersonic free jet expansion via a two photon photoionization involving the 193 nm output of an ArF excimer laser. The B $\to$ X electronic transition is probed and vibrational assignments are presented for both states. Comparisons to the infrared, raman, multiphoton ionization, and photoelectron spectrum of the parent molecule are made. The term value, T$\sb{00}$, for the B $\to$ X electronic transition is located at 24,675 cm$\sp{-1}$, which differs drastically with previously reported values from both experimental and theoretical …

Polypeptides: Conformational Transition And Complex Formation With Catechins And Procyanidins., Luanne Faith Tilstra Jan 1987

Polypeptides: Conformational Transition And Complex Formation With Catechins And Procyanidins., Luanne Faith Tilstra

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Theoretical explanations of the $\alpha$-helix to coil transition which employ rotational isomeric state calculations are reviewed. Recent advances in this field include the development of similar fundamentals for the intramolecular antiparallel $\beta$-sheet to coil transition. This dissertation adds to the current body of knowledge by outlining a formularization to calculate the mean square end-to-end distance, $\langle{\rm r}\sp2\rangle\sb{\rm o},$ of a homopolypeptide for the transition from random coil to intramolecular antiparallel $\beta$-sheet conformation. The formularization is translated into a computer program in the C language and values of $\langle{\rm r}\sp2\rangle\sb{\rm o}$ are calculated for a number of different statistical weights. These …

Repricing Made-To-Order Production Programs., Mehmet Murat Tarimcilar Jan 1987

Repricing Made-To-Order Production Programs., Mehmet Murat Tarimcilar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Planned procurement quantities in made-to-order production programs are often altered after production has started. Cost analysts are concerned about providing cost estimates for alternatives to ongoing programs. This research develops a new model for repricing made-to-order production programs. It is an effort to integrate a theoretically developed production phase prediction model into a comprehensive repricing model. The production model is defined by a cost function that employs the impact of two cost determinants, production rate and learning. It is supported by economic theory and is consistent with our knowledge of made-to-order production process. The theoretical model links the direct costs …

Estimation Of Direct And Maternal Additive And Heterotic Genetic Effects For Preweaning Traits In Beef Cattle., Chi Lawrence Tawah

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Progency records from 4 generations of a rotational crossbreeding experiment were fitted to a regression equation to obtain estimates of direct and maternal additive (Ig, Mg) and heterotic (Ih, Mh) genetic effects of preweaning traits for Angus (A), Brahman (B), Charolais (C), Hereford (H) breeds and their combinations. These estimates were fitted to prediction equations to compare preweaning performance of breed groups under different mating systems. Heterosis estimates were used to compute expected heterosis for each rotational cross. The C had the largest Ig estimate for BWT (5.2 kg), ADG (.074 kg/d) and WWT (22.1 kg) while H had the …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Republican Speeches In The 1856 Presidential Election Campaign., Linda Jean Webster Jan 1987

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Republican Speeches In The 1856 Presidential Election Campaign., Linda Jean Webster

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Republican party organized its first presidential campaign in 1856. The party was composed of men from a wide variety of political backgrounds, primarily from free soil and anti-slavery groups. The rhetoric of this first Republican campaign represented the efforts of these individual speakers to reconcile their free soil arguments with the official party platform. Although the party was loosely organized and poorly funded, many respected orators participated in the campaign. As background for the rhetorical analysis, the major political and historical events of the decade are identified in the first two chapters. Bleeding Kansas, abolitionism, and the reorganization of …
