A Cryogenic Double-Resonant Parabridge Motion Transducer For Resonant-Mass Gravitational Wave Detectors, O. D. Aguiar, W. W. Johnson, W. O. Hamilton

Faculty Publications

We designed, constructed, and tested at 4.2 K (using two different low phase noise electrical pump generators) a cryogenic double-resonant parabridge motion transducer made out of niobium, whose electrical output was amplified by a two-stage metal-semiconductor field-effect transistor cryogenic amplifier. Most of the experimental results agreed well with the theoretical models. We were able to adjust the two electrical bridge resonant frequencies at the pump frequency, allowing us to obtain an electromechanical coupling as high as 0.054, and we successfully measured the mechanical Brownian motion of this transducer. In one case, we observed a dip in the electrical noise spectrum …

Normal Matrices Over Hermitian Discrete Valuation Rings, William A. Adkins Nov 1991

Normal Matrices Over Hermitian Discrete Valuation Rings, William A. Adkins

Faculty Publications

A generalization of the classical spectral theorem for normal complex matrices is proved for matrices with entries from a class of discrete valuation rings which we have called hermitian. The hermitian discrete valuation rings include the convergent complex power series in one variable and the complex formal power series in one variable. Thus one obtains an algebraic proof of Rellich's theorem on diagnolizability of hermitian analytic matrices which is simultaneously valid for both the rings of convergent and formal power series. © 1991.

Theoretical Aspects Of Intense Field Harmonic Generation, Anne L. Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander Aug 1991

Theoretical Aspects Of Intense Field Harmonic Generation, Anne L. Huillier, Kenneth J. Schafer, Kenneth C. Kulander

Faculty Publications

We present theoretical studies of high-order harmonic generation in a rare-gas medium. The experimental results obtained at Saclay with a 1064 nm Nd-YAG laser in the 1013 W cm-2 intensity range are summarized. The harmonic emission strengths first decrease rather steeply for the first orders, then form a long plateau up to the 21st harmonic in xenon, or up to the 33rd harmonic in argon, before decreasing again rather abruptly. The theoretical description of these experiments consists first in the calculation of the photoemission spectra emitted by a single atom. The spectra are obtained by numerically integrating a time-dependent Schrôdinger …

Ternary Paving Matroids, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

Acketa has determined all binary paving matroids. This paper specifies all ternary paving matroids. There are precisely four minor-maximal 3-connected such matroids: S(5, 6, 12), PG(2, 3), the real affine cube, and one other 8-element self-dual matroid. © 1991.

A Molecular Blueprint For The Pore-Forming Structure Of Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels, Anne Grove, John M. Tomich, Mauricio Montal Aug 1991

A Molecular Blueprint For The Pore-Forming Structure Of Voltage-Gated Calcium Channels, Anne Grove, John M. Tomich, Mauricio Montal

Faculty Publications

A protein that imitates the sequence of a highly conserved segment predicted to line the pore of dihydropyridine-sensitive L-type calcium channels was designed and synthesized. Single-channel conductance properties were studied in planar lipid bilayers. The synthetic protein emulates the ionic conductance, ionic selectivity, and pharmacological properties of the authentic calcium channel, including the stereospecific action of agonist and antagonist enantiomers of the dihydropyridine BayK 8644. The identified sequence is identical in L-type calcium channels from skeletal muscle and isoforms of cardiac muscle, brain, and aorta. It is plausible that this structural motif represents the molecular blueprint for the pore-forming structure …

Non-Classical Derivation Of The Transport Theorems For Wave Fronts, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal

Faculty Publications

We establish a relationship between the derivatives of generalized functions and the transport theorems for moving surfaces of discontinuity. We study the motion of a propagating and deforming wave front which itself can have a moving discontinuity on its surface. With the help of the theory of generalized derivatives we present a general transport theorem which embodies the known results as special cases. © 1991.

Amplification Dynamics Of Human-Specific (Hs) Alu Family Members, Mark A. Batzer, Vandana A. Gudi, J. Carlos Mena, David W. Foltz, Rene J. Herrera, Prescott L. Deininger

Faculty Publications

We have investigated the distribution of several recently Inserted Alu family members within representatives of diverse human groups. Human population studies using 65 unrelated human DNA samples, as well as a familial study to test inheritance, showed that Individual Alu family members could be divided into three groups. The first group consisted of relatively older Alu family members which were monomorphic (homozygous) throughout the population tested (HS C3N1 and C4N6). The second group (HS C4N2, C4N5 and C4N8), apparently Inserted into other repetitive regions of the genome, resulting in inconclusive results in the PCR test used. However, it is clear …

Propagation Of Chaos And The Mckean-Vlasov Equation In Duals Of Nuclear Spaces, T. S. Chiang, G. Kallianpur, P. Sundar Jul 1991

Propagation Of Chaos And The Mckean-Vlasov Equation In Duals Of Nuclear Spaces, T. S. Chiang, G. Kallianpur, P. Sundar

Faculty Publications

An interacting system of n stochastic differential equations taking values in the dual of a countable Hilbertian nuclear space is considered. The limit (in probability) of the sequence of empirical measures determined by the above systems as n tends to ∞ is identified with the law of the unique solution of the McKean-Vlasov equation. An application of our result to interacting neurons is briefly discussed. The propagation of chaos result obtained in this paper is shown to contain and improve the well-known finite-dimensional results. © 1991 Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Tide Gauge Records, Water Level Rise, And Subsidence In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner Jun 1991

Tide Gauge Records, Water Level Rise, And Subsidence In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Long-term water level changes in the northern Gulf of Mexico were examined using tide gauge records for this century. Strong coherence exists between the annual mean water changes at Galveston, Texas, and (1) the relatively geologically-stable west coast of Florida, (2) global mean sea level, and 93) the subsiding Louisiana coast. Water levels at the Galveston gauge, one of the longest records (81 yr), have risen steadily, but not accelerated over the long-term. The apparent acceleration of water rise in the recent two decades is within the historical pattern, and is probably driven by regional or global, but not local …

Identification Of The Intermediate Allosteric Species In Human Hemoglobin Reveals A Molecular Code For Cooperative Switching, Margaret A. Daugherty, Madeline A. Shea, Jeremy A. Johnson, Vince J. Licata, George J. Turner, Gary K. Ackers

Faculty Publications

The 10 ligation species of human cyanomethemoglobin were previously found to distribute into three discrete cooperative free energy levels according to a combinatorial code (i.e., dependent on both the number and configuration of ligated subunits). Analysis of this distribution showed that the hemoglobin tetramer occupies a third allosteric state in addition to those of the unligated (T) and fully ligated (R) species. To determine the nature of the intermediate allosteric state, we have studied the effects of pH, temperature, and single-site mutations on its free energy of quaternary assembly, in parallel with corresponding data on the deoxy (T) and fully …

Some Extremal Connectivity Results For Matroids, Safwan Akkari, James Oxley Jan 1991

Some Extremal Connectivity Results For Matroids, Safwan Akkari, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let n be an integer exceeding one and M be a matroid having at least n + 2 elements. In this paper, we prove that every n-element subset X of E(M) is in an (n + 1)-element circuit if and only if (i) for every such subset, M X is disconnected, and (ii) for every subset Y with at most n elements, M Y is connected. Various extensions and consequences of this result are also derived including characterizations in terms of connectivity of the 4-point line and of Murty's Sylvester matroids. The former is a result of Seymour. © 1991.

On Minors Avoiding Elements In Matroids, James G. Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let ℱ be a collection of 3-connected matroids, none a proper minor of another, such that if M is a 3-connected matroid having a proper ℱ-minor and e is an element of M, then M has an ℱ-minor avoiding e. This paper proves that there are precisely two collections ℱ with this property: {U2,4} and {U2,4, M(K4)}. Several extensions of this result and some similar results for 2-connected matroids are also established. © 1991, Academic Press Limited. All rights reserved.

Role Of A Carboxyl-Terminal Helix In The Assembly, Interchain Interactions, And Stability Of Aspartate Transcarbamoylase, Cynthia B. Peterson, H. K. Schachman Jan 1991

Role Of A Carboxyl-Terminal Helix In The Assembly, Interchain Interactions, And Stability Of Aspartate Transcarbamoylase, Cynthia B. Peterson, H. K. Schachman

Faculty Publications

The six individual catalytic polypeptide chains within the two catalytic trimers of Escherichia coli aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase; EC 2.1.3.2) are folded into two discrete structural domains interconnected in part by helix 12, which comprises residues 285-305 and is located near the carboxyl terminus of the chain. The essential role of this helix in folding of the chains and their assembly into ATCase was demonstrated by introducing a stop codon at the position corresponding to amino acid 284, 291, or 299. Cells containing these mutations are pyrimidine auxotrophs lacking ATCase-like protein in cell extracts. In contrast, stable active enzyme is formed …

Measurement Of Acetate Concentrations In Marine Pore Waters By Using An Enzymatic Approach, G. M. King Jan 1991

Measurement Of Acetate Concentrations In Marine Pore Waters By Using An Enzymatic Approach, G. M. King

Faculty Publications

Acetate concentrations in marine and freshwater matrices were measured by an enzymatic technique which coupled the synthesis of acetyl coenzyme A to AMP production. The resulting AMP was assayed by a sensitive and relatively rapid high-pressure liquid chromatography method, using an aqueous, isocratic mobile phase for elution. The method was insensitive to the presence of seawater salts and required no sample prepurification or distillation. Propionate caused a minor, but statistically insignificant, interference when equimolar with acetate; butyrate caused no interference, even at relatively high concentrations. Detection limits for acetate were approximately 100 nM with a precision of about 5%. Pore …

Simplified Procedure For The Isolation Of Intact Chloroplasts From Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Sharon Matthews, Terry M. Bricker, James V. Moroney Jan 1991

Simplified Procedure For The Isolation Of Intact Chloroplasts From Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Catherine B. Mason, Sharon Matthews, Terry M. Bricker, James V. Moroney

Faculty Publications

A simple procedure that yields highly purified intact chloroplasts from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is described. This procedure involves breakage of cell wall-deficient cells by passing them through a narrow bore syringe needle. The intact chloroplasts are then purified from the crude homogenate by differential centrifugation and Percoll gradient centrifugation. This procedure generates relatively high yields of chloroplasts capable of CO2 fixation. These chloroplasts were characterized by electron microscopy, marker enzyme analysis, and ferricyanide exclusion. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that these chloroplasts retain their pyrenoids and eyespots. Scanning electron microscopy confirms that the characteristic cup shape of C. reinhardtii chloroplasts persists in …

The Soviet-American Gallium Experiment is the first experiment able to measure the dominant flux of low energy p-p solar neutrinos. Four extractions made during January to May 1990 from 30 tons of gallium have been counted and indicate that the flux is consistent with 0 SNU and is less than 72 SNU (68% CL) and less than 138 SNU (95% CL). This is to be compared with the flux of 132 SNU predicted by the Standard Solar Model. © 1991.

Distributional Solutions Of The Wiener-Hopf Integral And Integro-Differential Equations, R. Estrada, R. P. Kanwal

Faculty Publications

We present the theory and technique for obtaining the distributional solutions for the Wiener-Hopf integral and integro-differential equations. This is achieved by identifying a class of kernels for which these equations are well defined and are of the Fredholm type. Consequently, the associated operators and their images are of finite dimensions. Furthermore, we define the operators in such a way that the corresponding equations hold at the end points; otherwise, the equations are usually ill-behaved. We illustrate our analysis with the help of various examples. © 1991, Rocky Mountain Mathematics Consortium. All Rights Reserved.
