The Role Of The Filifactor Alocis Hypothetical Protein Fa1654 In Oxidative Stress Resistance, Malissa Makaylia Mangar
The Role Of The Filifactor Alocis Hypothetical Protein Fa1654 In Oxidative Stress Resistance, Malissa Makaylia Mangar
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The survival/adaptation of Fillifactor alocis, a fastidious gram positive asaccharolytic anaerobe in the inflammatory environment of the periodontal pocket, requires an ability to overcome oxidative stress. Moreover, emerging observations suggest its pathogenic characteristics are highlighted by its capacity to survive in the oxidative-stress microenvironment of the periodontal pocket and its likely ability to modulate the microbial community dynamics. There is still a significant gap in our understanding of F. alocis mechanism of oxidative stress resistance and its impact on the virulence and pathogenicity of the microbial biofilm. The pathogenicity of F. alocis may be impacted by its response to oxidative …
Maxillary Central Incisor Rr In Hispanic And Non-Hispanic White Patients With Rme, Madison Healy
Maxillary Central Incisor Rr In Hispanic And Non-Hispanic White Patients With Rme, Madison Healy
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: Apical root resorption is one of the most common adverse effects of orthodontic treatment. Forces used during orthodontic tooth movement can cause permanent loss of apical surfaces of teeth and although most reported cases of root resorption are asymptomatic, the process is irreversible and often unpredictable. Thus, it is of clinical interest to investigate which patients may be at greatest risk.
Purpose: This study utilized Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) to evaluate whether rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in Hispanic patients increased the severity of orthodontically induced apical root resorption.
Materials and Methods: Pre-treatment (T1) and post-treatment …

Extraction Vs. Non-Extraction: Comparing Orthodontic Root Resorption, Benjamin Rush
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: Orthodontically induced apical root resorption (OIARR) can be a risk to orthodontic treatment. Advancements in imaging warrant further investigation into potential causes and solutions are worthwhile. Purpose: This study compared incidence and severity of OIARR in incisors during orthodontic treatment with and without bicuspid extractions. Materials and Methods: This study included 63 patients (504 teeth). DICOM CBCT images were imported into OsiriX MD software (version 10.0.3) for tooth length measurements from coronal and sagittal views in all incisors and incisal angulation for central incisors. Difference in tooth length from incisal edge to root apex from pre-treatment and post-treatment measurements …

Titanium Particles Within Mucosa During Non-Surgical Implant Debridement, Holvin Louie
Titanium Particles Within Mucosa During Non-Surgical Implant Debridement, Holvin Louie
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Titanium implants affected by peri-implantitis lesions are often treated non-surgically with various instruments, which may produce titanium particles that can become lodged within the peri-implant mucosa. Thus, a foreign body reaction may ensue. The aim is to assess the embedment of titanium particles into soft tissues from titanium implants via a stainless-steel ultrasonic scaler (SSU) versus a titanium hand scaler (TH). Sand-blasted, large grit, acid-etched surface-treated titanium implants were implanted into pig legs after creating peri-implantitis defects. Each implant was subjected to only one instrument type. Sequential strokes were conducted followed by thorough irrigation with sterile water. Soft tissue curettage …
Accuracy Of Implant Placement Comparing A Tissue Level Static Guide Vs. Dynamic Navigation Using The X-Mark Protocol On Edentulous Mandibles: A Laboratory Study, Nicholas Poovey
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: With the use of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM), along with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), clinicians can have a static surgical guide fabricated to aid in the placement of implants. Dynamic navigation forgoes the step of fabricating a static surgical guide. A new software and protocol have been created for dynamic navigation surgery. Data for the accuracy of this protocol on fully edentulous arches is limited and therefore leads us to this study.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the accuracy of implant placement in an edentulous ridge using static tissue level surgical guides …
A Study In Fresh Human Cadaver Heads Examining The Incidence Of Maxillary Sinus Membrane Perforation During Crestal Sinus Elevation Comparing Osteotomes To Osseodensification Drills., Thaer Alqadoumi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: Crestal sinus membrane elevation technique is a surgical procedure that helps gain vertical bone volume when there is a pneumatization of the maxillary sinus. Due to some visual limitations inherent to the procedure, the potential for maxillary sinus membrane perforations and subsequent complications exists. A crestal sinus lift using osseodensification drills has been used lately but there are not many studies to support the protocol. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the incidence of sinus membrane perforation during Osseodensification compared to the incidence of bone added crestal sinus elevation using osteotomes (BAOSFE). The secondary aim …

The Effect Of Diet On The Variation Of Blood And Urine Heavy Metal Biomarkers Among National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (Nhanes) Subjects: A Secondary Data Analysis, Devineé Lingo, Alyssa Perri
Loma Linda University Research Reports
Background: Heavy metals are non-essential elements that provide no biological benefit to the human body. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium are toxic to humans even in trace amounts. Humans are exposed to various heavy metals through ingestion of contaminated food and water supplies. Heavy metals can accumulate in body organs and displace essential minerals leading to detrimental health effects such as neurological, endocrine, and immune dysfunction, that can result in long-term damage.
Objective: The purpose of this graduate student research study was to examine the effect of diet on the variation of blood and urine lead, …

Non-Accidental Trauma: Nature Of Subsequent Encounters And Related Outcomes, Marina Bassili
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Physical abuse results in a wide array of adverse outcomes, and victims of child abuse often require long-term, intensive care depending on the scope and severity of their trauma. The present study is an extension of a study which examined the services provided in the hospital to children with physical abuse that resulted in hospitalization (Kazandjian, et. al., 2016). It will examine the nature of subsequent hospital encounters in pediatric victims of Non-Accidental Trauma (NAT) at the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital (LLUCH). Researchers will investigate the short-term and long-term physical, neurological, cognitive/developmental, behavioral, and social emotional effects experienced by …
Validity Of The Perceptual Ability Test, Brandon Schmid
Validity Of The Perceptual Ability Test, Brandon Schmid
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The Perceptual Ability Test (PAT), a subtest of the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), has been used for many years by US Dental Schools to evaluate the perceptual ability of incoming applicants of their program. Perceptual ability is broadly defined as the ability to accurately process and interpret visual sensory information. Perceptual Ability skills are important in the field of Dentistry, as they are critical to the applied use of various dental tools and in surgical skills. It is assumed that performance on the PAT is predictive of dental students’ surgical skill development. However, multiple studies have found that the PAT …

Medical And Parental Predictors Of Self-Efficacy In Pediatric Chronic Illness, Naina Mahtani
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Self-efficacy, defined as the belief in one’s ability to succeed, is particularly important in youth struggling with chronic illness (CI) given its association with poorer adherence and worse prognosis. Parental factors such as income and marital status, and youth factors such as number of hospitalizations have been examined as contributing to self-efficacy in children. The aim of the current study was to assess the extent to which these variables predict self-efficacy in a sample of youth 8-17 suffering from CI. Data were collected from 217 families with a child with a CI aged 8-17, being seen by a medical provider …

Comparison Of Heat Generated During Twist Drilling Protocol By Guided And Non-Guided Implant Surgery, Joshua Lee
Comparison Of Heat Generated During Twist Drilling Protocol By Guided And Non-Guided Implant Surgery, Joshua Lee
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: Guided implant surgery is becoming more prevalent among clinicians and is crucial for cases in which there are concerns about the proximity of the implant to vital anatomical structures, esthetic concerns, and the amount/quality of bone available. Surgical guides help with the angulation and positioning of the implant through the use of a CBCT scan and digital intraoral impression. However, there are some drawbacks with guided surgery. Heat that is generated during the osteotomy is one of the issues that has been of concern. The guide acts as a shield against the water irrigation from reaching the osteotomy …
