The Effect Of A Social-Emotional-Behavioral Framework On Middle School Student Achievement: A Causal-Comparative Study, Meredith Nicole Ford Jordan Dec 2019

The Effect Of A Social-Emotional-Behavioral Framework On Middle School Student Achievement: A Causal-Comparative Study, Meredith Nicole Ford Jordan

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

With heightened accountability requirements, schools are under pressure to produce academic results while addressing behavioral challenges. The implementation of social-emotional-behavioral frameworks has improved behavioral outcomes in students, but the impact on academic outcomes has yet to be answered. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the full implementation of a social-emotional-behavioral framework produces the desired academic outcome results and growth on state-standards achievement tests in students with disabilities at the middle school level. Ninety-two Virginia middle schools formed the sample population. Three settings implemented a three-tier framework for one-two (MSA) years, three-four years (MSB), and five years plus …

Impact Of Xenoestrogens On Reproductive Health, Emma Curtis Oct 2019

Impact Of Xenoestrogens On Reproductive Health, Emma Curtis

Senior Honors Theses

Xenoestrogens such as phthalates, parabens, bisphenol A, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, and dioxins are compounds found in ordinary substances such as detergents, cosmetics, plastics, pesticides and herbicides (Sonnenschein & Soto, 1998). Estrogen is a vital component in the development of the male and female reproductive system. However, xenoestrogens mimic endogenous estrogenic signaling and exhibit endocrine disrupting properties that may cause long-lasting repercussions on human reproductive health. Xenoestrogen bind to both intracellular and membrane-bound estrogen receptors resulting in an inappropriate activation of tissue-specific estrogenic responses, leading to low sperm count in males and precocious puberty and polycystic ovarian syndrome in females (Shanle & Xu, …

Exploring The Adulthood Transition Through The Eyes Of Adults Living With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Phenomenological Study Of Their Expectations, Perceptions, Experiences, And Goals Regarding Adulthood, Matthew Noakes

Senior Honors Theses

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a prevalent developmental disorder that makes daily, independent living difficult for many people around the world. Depending on the severity of ASD symptoms, individuals living with ASD rely on various supports to develop everyday skills. However, many of these supports fade away as these individuals transition out of high school into adulthood where they are introduced to an entirely new set of social systems including postsecondary institutions, workplace environments, independent/codependent living arrangements, and mature social relationships. Four emerging adults with ASD were interviewed to gather their expectations, perceptions, experiences, and goals regarding these different domains …

Combating Human Trafficking In The United States: Causes, Misconceptions, And Indicators, Mariah A. Andrade

Masters Theses

Human trafficking is one of the biggest human rights issues today, with millions of men, women, and children being trafficked across the world. Of those millions of people, it’s estimated that roughly 14 to 17,000 foreign nationals are brought into the United States each year, in addition to our own citizens recruited into the industry. The largest issue that hinders the ability to combat human trafficking is the research surrounding this problem. There are many misconceptions about human trafficking, especially the fact that many people do not believe it is happening in the U.S. Modern day human trafficking takes many …

Periodontitis And The Elderly: An Overview Of The Disease And Its Impact On An Aging Population, Nicole Grace Weissenfluh Apr 2019

Periodontitis And The Elderly: An Overview Of The Disease And Its Impact On An Aging Population, Nicole Grace Weissenfluh

Senior Honors Theses

Periodontitis affects millions of Americans each year, and is especially prevalent among the elderly. Since periodontitis is a chronic, progressive condition, uninterrupted disease progression leads to irreversible oral damage; therefore, periodontitis often reduces the oral health-related quality of life. Furthermore, research strongly suggests a correlation between periodontitis and other systemic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus), highlighting the importance of understanding, treating, and preventing periodontitis. This thesis explores the pathology and etiology of periodontitis, with special focus given to the prevalence and impact of the disease in the elderly population. Additionally, the connection between periodontitis and other systemic diseases …

A Phenomenological Study Of Graduated Nursing Student Athletes' Experiences Balancing Academics And Athletics, Robert E. Steed Apr 2019

A Phenomenological Study Of Graduated Nursing Student Athletes' Experiences Balancing Academics And Athletics, Robert E. Steed

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study is to describe the lived experiences of eleven graduated nursing student athletes who completed traditional, four-year nursing programs while concurrently finishing four years of athletic eligibility in their respective sport at three private, Christian, Midwest universities and across three different competitive collegiate athletic divisions. The theories guiding this study are Tinto’s Theory of Individual Departure from Institutions of Higher Learning, Astin’s Theory of Student Involvement, and Lazarus and Folkman’s Transactional Model of Stress Response, as they relate to student athletes’ persistence to graduation and to nursing students who reportedly experience higher levels of …

Increase In Pneumococcal Immunization In Adults Over 65 Years Of Age In A Federally Qualified Health Center, Mara J. Dominguez

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Pneumococcal disease is a healthcare concern with increasing financial and societal burden for adults over the age of 65 years and their caretakers. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the use of pneumococcal vaccines in this population as a preventive measure helping minimize the mortality and morbidity. This project aimed at increasing the rate of pneumococcal vaccines in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). The interventions implemented included the use of audit, feedback and provider educational intervention aimed at increasing the knowledge and the intent to change and improve their practice. An Education Implementation Project In An Emergency Department To Increase Awareness And Referral For Trafficked Person Encounters, Stacey Lynn Alderman Mar 2019

An Education Implementation Project In An Emergency Department To Increase Awareness And Referral For Trafficked Person Encounters, Stacey Lynn Alderman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Human trafficking impacts sufferers on a global scale with serious and lifelong health issues associated with the illegal practice. Interventions for these victims’ extensive health issues must ignite healthcare staff education and expert clinical interventions. Due to these health problems, healthcare staff function on the front lines to identify and help trafficked persons. This study focused on the scope of trafficking and health staff awareness, identification strategies to help recognize trafficked persons, techniques for interviewing, best practice strategies for intervention and referral, and new coding guidelines. During the intervention, health staff received a human trafficking pre-education questionnaire, a research supported …
