Nearly 400 people gathered at the West High street bridge Sunday afternoon to witness the unusual spectacle of a public baptism of colored people in the waters of the Kokosing. The ceremony was performed by Elder Grayson of the Calvary Baptist church. Intrepidly, he waded out into the river until the water was up to his shoulders and there received the various postulants. There were 16 in all, 8 of each sex. All were submerged completely and the icy waters caused two of the women to faint.
