Effectiveness Of The Completion Bonus Program For Achievement In Adult Education, Mary Ziegler, Olga Ebert

This study examined use of a cash bonus as an incentive for welfare recipients to make progress in Adult Basic Education programs and pass the GED test. The number of people in sixteen programs who made learning gains appears to have increased after the bonus program was introduced.

The purpose of this study was to investigate downsizing from the perspective of the person who was separated from the job, and to explore its connection to violence and peace studies. Findings suggest that experiences varied according to context and point of view and that downsizing was often a violative.

This longitudinal study explores the influence on teaching beliefs from participating in a masters program in adult education. A group of practicing adult educators was interviewed over a two-year period while participating in graduate study. Findings reveal that graduate school had little impact on their prior teaching beliefs. Implications for graduate schools are discussed.

This paper uses data from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Learning to investigate how discursive and structural dimensions of social capital influence engagement in learning. The primary finding is that social capital influences formal and informal learning in opposite directions.

A desire to promote learning for personal development and change dominates much of research and practice in adult and higher education. Few studies, however, have attempted to describe how participating learners experience developmental programs, or how they make sense of these programs in the their particular life contexts. In this study, we describe the re-making of a “learner” identity, as narrated by underprepared adults enrolled in a developmentally-oriented community college program.

This study explored the ideological messages about welfare recipients promoted in two welfare-to-work programs. It was found that programs are greatly influenced by the unjust stereotypes about welfare recipients upheld in popular rhetoric. It is concluded that critical educators should question these dominant discourses and find ways to promote this questioning in programs.

This paper begins an analysis of the development of professional identity among teachers and coordinators in steel mill learning programs. Teachers and coordinators all have an extreme flexibility in thinking about their own careers and in dealing with the issues that arise in the workplace. They have worked to develop a sense of vision and a philosophy of adult education that allows them to connect with the learners while working at some semblance of professional growth.

This study examined the experiences of ten adult distance learners enrolled in on-line undergraduate business management courses. The frameworks of Rogers and Giddens have relevance for these distance learners who displayed strategies for exerting agency over time, proximity, and authority in order to maintain, obtain, surrender, or share control.

The authors report on their qualitative study of eight students in a class on writing for publication and the nature of the writing process in academia. While the participants found value and purpose in writing and scholarly writing, they had great difficulty with criticism and using feedback in constructive ways.

This paper employs Kovel’s (1991) five meditations on spirit as an analytical framework for exploring the spirituality of committed environmental activists. Exploring Teaching Roles And Responsibilities In Adult Literacy Education: Do Teachers See Themselves As Transformative Educators?, Karen M. Margo

This qualitative study compared English and ESL teachers’ perspectives of teaching and learning with the role of the adult educator and the process of learning, most notably described by Jack Mezirow in his theory of transformational learning and Paulo Freire in his critical theory of adult education. Significant parallels between some of the teachers’ intentions, views of learning, and curriculum orientation were consistent with the role of the educator and the process of learning described in transformative theories of adult learning. The teachers in this study also held many reservations about the role of the teacher as a change agent.

The purpose of this exploration was to identify the links between the literature bases of transformative learning theory and cross cultural adaptation. Eight extant studies combining these two areas of literature were examined to find similarities and differences.
