Most soil sampling is conducted from August to November in Montana because of better soil sampling conditions and because it provides more time for growers to make fertilizer decisions prior to application. Fertilizer guidelines in Montana are based on spring nitrate-N levels in the upper 2 ft because they are more indicative of growing season available N than fall nitrate-N levels. It is not known how much nitrate-N levels change between late summer and spring, nor is it known what factors affect these changes, and large changes could result in either over-application of N fertilizer or sub-optimal yields. A three-year …
Concentration Of Key Elements In North American Meat & Bone Meal, Rafael A. Garcia, Kurt A. Rosentrater
Concentration Of Key Elements In North American Meat & Bone Meal, Rafael A. Garcia, Kurt A. Rosentrater

Meat & bone meal (MBM) and related rendered protein commodities have potential for use in applications other than animal feed, including use as a fuel or a phosphorus fertilizer. In order to develop these applications, data on the elemental composition are required; the currently available elemental composition data have important limitations. To generate more appropriate and reliable data, MBM samples were collected from 17 North American rendering plants, carefully prepared and analyzed for 20 elements. Preliminary studies showed that the sample preparation process artificially increased levels of sulfur and nickel in a manner that was correctable. Concentrations of many elements …
Influence Of Endomycorrhizae On Growth Of Sweetgum Seedlings From Eight Mother Trees, Richard C. Schultz, Paul P. Kormanik, William C. Bryan
Influence Of Endomycorrhizae On Growth Of Sweetgum Seedlings From Eight Mother Trees, Richard C. Schultz, Paul P. Kormanik, William C. Bryan
Richard C. Schultz
Sweetgum seedlings from eight mother trees were grown in fumigated soil with or without the endomycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae at four levels of soil fertility for one growing season in nursery microplots. Nonmycorrhizal seedlings of all families died or failed to exceed 5 cm in height regardless of soil fertility. Endomycorrhizal seedlings suffered little mortality, averaged about 36 cm in height, and fertility level did not significantly influence their biomass. These results demonstrate that to increase the percentage of plantable seedlings in nurseries sweetgum seedlings must be endomycorrhizal. The data further suggests that adequate endomycorrhizal inoculum in nursery beds can …
