An electronic individual descriptive record system for storing the individual's identification and descriptive data on a programmable electronic identification and data storage module carried with the individual so that the individual's identification, the individual's descriptive data and the individual itself become one. The system includes an implantable programmable electronic identification and data storage module carried by the individual, and a reading and recording device which communicates with the electronic identification and data storage module.

Disclosed herein are genetic markers for animal growth, appetite and fatness, methods for identifying such markers, and methods of screening animals to determine those more likely to produce desired growth, appetite and fatness and preferably selecting those animals for future breeding purposes. The markers are based upon the presence or absence of certain polymorphisms in the Ghrelin gene.

A method for determining improved disease resistance in animals is disclosed. The method assays for a novel genetic alleles of the BPI gene of the animal. The alleles are correlated with superior disease resistance. Novel nucleotide sequences, assays and primers are disclosed for the methods of the invention.

A method for determining improved innate immunity, disease resistance or performance in animals is disclosed. The method involves assays for a genetic differences in the NRAMP1 gene of the animal which is associated with superior disease resistance. Novel NRAMP1 sequence, assays, and compositions for identifying the presence of absence of these alleles are provided.

A method of decreasing plasma cholesterol is disclosed. The method includes oral administration of coprostanol-producing bacteria to humans. These organisms, once in the small intestine, will reduce free cholesterol to coprostanol, which is absorbed poorly. Pharmaceutical compositions for delivery are included as are different methods of delivery such as placing the microorganisms in food.

A method is provided for raising meat producing domestic animals to increase lean tissue development. β-hydroxcy-β-methylbutyric acid or an edible salt thereof (HMB) is administered to the animals in an effective amount for a sufficient length of time to obtain a substantial increase in lean tissue weight. Feed compositions for use in practicing the method are also provided. The method and feed compositions are particularly adapted for use with ruminants, including beef cattle and lambs, since HMB is not subject to appreciable rumen destruction. The method can also be practiced with other domestic animals, including chickens, and turkeys.

Cholesterol reductase was discovered in certain green plant parts. The enzyme is known to be present in several bacteria that commonly inhabit the digestive tract of animals. Eubacteria species A.T.C.C. 21408 is one such cholesterol reductase-containing bacterium. It is concentrated from a homogenate, preferably of leaves of plants or from bacteria or other organisms to provide a cell-free, cholesterol reductase-enriched preparation that can be used to decrease cholesterol content of food substances.

Cattle breeding herds are managed for accelerated time-controlled calving, using groups of cows predicted to calve within a period of 10 days, 1000 to 10,000 units of purified porcine relaxin are administered intramuscularly or intracervically. Auxiliary agents may also be administered such as methasone or dexamethasone. Within the selected group, parturition can be limited to time periods as short as 24 to 48 hours. Further, parturition can be accelerated from 2 to 10 days. These benefits are obtained without adverse side effects such as retained placenta or dystocia.
