This study focuses on the interaction of U.S. agricultural exports, regional patterns of farm production, and the problem of agricultural sediment. It also evaluates alternative policies in abating sedimentation of the nation's main river basins. One underlying hypothesis of the study is that changes in agricultural export demands cause shifts in the comparative advantage among producing regions within the United States and alter regional land use patterns, farm incomes, consumer food prices, and soil loss. Mechanism Of Decarboxylation Of Glycine And Glycolate By Isolated Soybean Cells, David J. Oliver

Isolated soybean leaf mesophyll cells decarboxylated exogenously added [1-14C]glycolate and [1-14C]glycine in the dark. The rate of CO2 release from glycine was inhibited over 90% by isonicotinic acid hydrazide and about 80% by KCN, two inhibitors of the glycine to serine plus CO2 reaction. The release of CO2 from glycolate was inhibited by less than 50% under the same conditions. This indicates that about 50% of the CO2 released from glycolate occurred at a site other than the glycine to serine reaction. Historically, the U.S. farm sector has been a leader in meeting the challenges of the world's growing food demand. American farmers produced an impressive 24 percent of the total world food and feed grains in 1977. Seedlings of eight half-sib sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) families were grown for 6 months in a fumigated soil mixture, with or without inoculum from a mixture of Glomus mosseae and Glomus etunicatus fungi, at levels of 140, 280, 560, and 1120 kg/ha of 10-10-10 fertilizer. All seedlings received three additions of 187 kg/ha of N during the growing season. Inoculated seedlings had significantly greater biomass, height, and stem diameters at each fertilizer level than nonmycorrhizal control seedlings. Iowa's grain and fertilizer transportation and distribution systems are undergoing major changes. Some rail lines are being upgraded; others are being abandoned. Major grain elevator expansions have been completed at some locations, and other grain and fertilizer facility expansions are being considered. Information on both the volume of grain likely to be moved out of Iowa counties and on the required in shipments of fertilizer in future years is needed to guide decisions on grain and fertilizer transportation and distribution facility expansion, relocation, or abandonment.

Special Report

Weight loss of fed steers during shipment to market adds to marketing cost. An understanding of factors influencing weight loss will aid feeders in making marketing decisions. In this study, we identified several factors that have a significant impact on percentage liveweight shrink and on hot-carcass weights of fed steers, quantified these impacts, and developed a method for predicting liveweight shrink and hot-carcass weight. Predictions of liveweight shrink and hot-carcass weight formed the basis for our development of guidelines for the evaluation and comparison of fed-steer marketing alternatives.

One of the M4 progenies of PK-71-39 soybean irradiated with 10 Kr gamma rays showed segregation for sterility in soybean in 1976. It had 18 sterile plants and 4 normal plants, indicating that a single dominant gene was responsible for sterility. The sterile plants had no seeds and, therefore, this appeared to be a dead end for this mutant.

The method of experimental mutagenesis is effective in investigating the hereditary alterations of plants with their further use in selection. F2 linkage results are presented in Table l with a= XY, b= Xy, c= xY and d= xy for the eight gene pairs listed in the fonn of Xx and Yy. Percentage recombination was obtained from the ratio products following Irrmer and Henderson (1943). The data for each of the gene pairs gave a good fit to a 3:1 ratio.

Prior to the establishment of the space habitats of the future, the life science program office of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is interested in the development of a ground-based manned demonstration of the closed ecological life support system (CELSS). Since CELSS concept centers around complete recycling of all available resources, a genetic plant design to render the total plant more useful is very important. Previous studies (Phillips , 1977; Phillips et al., 1978) conducted for NASA clearly indicate the usefulness of soybean-Plants in such a system.

Soybeans normally nodulate with Rhizobium japonicum and fix nitrogen in symbiotic association. However, several interactions, under genetic control, have been reported which result in ineffective nodulation or failure of the fixation process despite substantial nodule development. The recessive gene, rj1 , (Williams and Lynch, 1954) in homozygous mode, results in the exclusion from nodulation of a broad spectrum of Rhizobium jabonicum strains in soil culture.

Irradiation treatment of seeds, pollen, or sporocytes has been used successfully to produce aneuploids in a number of genera. When Dr. E. G. Hammond had finished selecting M1 plants from his neutron irradiation experiment, I had the opportunity to go through his radiated material to select off-type and semi-sterile plants and to determine the kinds of aneuploids produced by radiation of soybeans. The soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill) uses both combined nitrogen from the soil and symbiotically fixed nitrogen from the air if effective nodules are present on its roots. Both sources of nitrogen are required for maximum yields at reasonable costs. In the absence of nodules, yields can be brought up to the level of those where effective nodules are present, but only with a high rate of nitrogen fertilizer application.

Soybean intercropping with other crops usually causes poor yield, mainly by light reduction . Sometimes, a continuous rainfall during the growing season in the area of monsoon is a major factor for yield reduction in soybean by insufficient sunlight as well as shading by intercropping. Recently our laboratory has collected over 1500 lines as germplasm for Korean native soybean lines and has conducted tests for evaluation of various agronomic characters.
