Dependency On Military Base Employment's Effect On Defense Expenditure Voting In Congress: A Brac Era Test Of The Military Industrial Complex Theory, Kathleen Frawley '06

This study will explore the relationship between a district's dependency on military base employment and the Member's vote on defense appropriations bills for over the past three fiscal years (FY 2004,2005,2006). Such an analysis can be 1 used as a very preliminary test of whether there will be political impacts from the BRAC changes. While a more suitable study could be performed in the future using actual closure data and voting records, that data will not be available for several years. This essay explores the success of the agenda set in the State of the Union and attempts to provide insight on the factors that affect this success. Specifically, I will examine many factors on legislation which include: How does the year in a President's term affect legislative success? How does control of government affect legislative success? What role does partisanship play in the success of the agenda? After this analysis, I will evaluate the presidential success scores reported by the CQ almanac in relationship with the success of the President's agenda.

Islamic heritage is one of the cultural factors cited in the literature as being detrimental to women 's political participation. Having a Muslim population does not aflect women's participation in national parliaments equally, however. Across countries with predominately Muslim citizenries, the percentage of women in the national legislature varies considerably. The literature on women's political participation identijies three main determinants of the percentage of women in parliament: structural, institutional, and cultural factors. Corruption's Hold On The Economy: An Examination Of The Causes Of Economic Development, Peter Raatz '06

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study focuses on the relationship between political corruption and economic development through a cross-national survey of twenty-three of the twenty-five European Union Member States. This study was conducted in order to expand on the research conducted by Margaret Goodman and Nathaniel Leff. The survey examined the effect of political corruption on six dependent variables that represent economic development: gross domestic product per capita, unemployment rate, education, fertility rate, infant mortality rate, and government debt. Of the six, GDP, unemployment and fertility were shown to be significant. The findings suggest that corruption index increase coupled with a job creation program …
