Infusing Theory Into The Undergraduate Classics Curriculum: Examples From Haverford College's Senior Seminar, Translation And Transformation, And History Of Literary Theory, Robert Germany, Bret Mulligan, Deborah H. Roberts

Faculty Publications

This article describes three courses at Haverford College in which theory is the object of attention: Translation and Transformation: Theory and Practice; History of Literary Theory: Plato to Shelley; and Senior Seminar. In the last of these, students survey a range of theoretical approaches in relation to classical literature and are thus encouraged to develop senior theses that are more sophisticated in their awareness and use of method. The theoretical focus of all three courses allows students to appreciate the capacities and limitations of theory for the critical analysis of texts and cultures.

Serotonin Transporter Genotype Modulates Functional Connectivity Between Amygdala And Pcc/Pcu During Mood Recovery, Zhuo Fang, Senhua Zhu, Seth J. Gillihan, Marc Korczykowski Oct 2013

Serotonin Transporter Genotype Modulates Functional Connectivity Between Amygdala And Pcc/Pcu During Mood Recovery, Zhuo Fang, Senhua Zhu, Seth J. Gillihan, Marc Korczykowski

Faculty Publications

The short (S) allele of the serotonin transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) has been associated with increased susceptibility to depression. Previous neuroimaging studies have consistently showed increased amygdala activity during the presentation of negative stimuli or regulation of negative emotion in the homozygous short allele carriers, suggesting the key role of amygdala response in mediating increased risk for depression. The brain default mode network (DMN) has also been shown to modulate amygdala activity. However, it remains unclear whether 5-HTTLPR genetic variation modulates functional connectivity (FC) between the amygdala and regions of DMN. In this study, we re-analyzed our previous imaging dataset …

Moderation And Mediation Of An Effective Hiv Risk-Reduction Intervention For South African Adolescents, Ann O'Leary, John B. Jemmott, Loretta S. Jemmott, Zolani Ngwane

Faculty Publications

Let Us Protect Our Future" is a sexual risk-reduction intervention for sixth-grade adolescents in South Africa. Tested in a cluster-randomized controlled trial, the intervention significantly reduced self-reported intercourse and unprotected intercourse during a 12-month follow-up period. The present analyses were conducted to identify moderators of the intervention's efficacy as well as, which theory-based variables mediated the intervention's effects. Intervention efficacy over the 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up was tested using generalized estimating equation models. Living with their father in the home, parental strictness, and religiosity moderated the efficacy of the intervention in reducing unprotected intercourse. Self-efficacy to avoid risky situations …

Provincial Anthropology, Circumlocution, And The Copious Use Of Everything, Laurie Kain Hart Jan 2006

Provincial Anthropology, Circumlocution, And The Copious Use Of Everything, Laurie Kain Hart

Faculty Publications

Provincial towns are not miniature replicas of national metropolises but centers with their own trajectories of aesthetic and civic development. They operate in a regional context in relation both to the rural villages within their spheres of influence and to international cultural circuits. Inhabitants of peripheral towns in Greece negotiate the challenges of pluralism, modernization, and the hegemony of the nation state in their own social, political, and cultural idioms of accommodation and distancing. A close analysis of the modern history, city planning, and architecture of Florina in Western Greek Macedonia, particularly in the period between WWI and WWII, shows …
