X-Ray Observations Of The Compact Central Object In Supernova Remnant G347.3-0.5, J. S. Lazendic, P. O. Slane, B. M. Gaensler, P. P. Plucinsky, Fronefield Crawford

Faculty Publications

We present Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer observations of 1WGA J1713.4-3949, a compact source at the center of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G347.3-0.5. The X-ray spectrum of the source is well fitted by the sum of a blackbody component with a temperature of ~0.4 keV plus a power-law component with a photon index of ~4. We found no pulsations down to 4% in the 0.01-0.16 Hz range nor down to 25% in the 0.01-128 Hz range. This source resembles other compact central objects in SNRs, and we suggest that 1WGA J1713.4-3949 is the associated neutron …

Radio Polarization Of The Young High-Magnetic-Field Pulsar Psr J1119-6127, Fronefield Crawford Jan 2003

Radio Polarization Of The Young High-Magnetic-Field Pulsar Psr J1119-6127, Fronefield Crawford

Faculty Publications

We have investigated the radio polarization properties of PSR J1119-6127, a recently discovered young radio pulsar with a large magnetic field. Using pulsar-gated radio imaging data taken at a center frequency of 2496 MHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have determined a rotation measure for the pulsar of +842 ± 23 rad m-2. These data, combined with archival polarimetry data taken at a center frequency of 1366 MHz with the Parkes telescope, were used to determine the polarization characteristics of PSR J1119-6127 at both frequencies. The pulsar has a fractional linear polarization of ~75% and ~55% at 1366 …

The Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey - Iii. Young Pulsars And The Discovery And Timing Of 200 Pulsars, Michael Kramer, Jon F. Bell, Richard N. Manchester, Andrew G. Lyne, Fronefield Crawford Jan 2003

The Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey - Iii. Young Pulsars And The Discovery And Timing Of 200 Pulsars, Michael Kramer, Jon F. Bell, Richard N. Manchester, Andrew G. Lyne, Fronefield Crawford

Faculty Publications

The Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey has unlocked vast areas of the Galactic plane, which were previously invisible to earlier low-frequency and less-sensitive surveys. The survey has discovered more than 600 new pulsars so far, including many that are young and exotic. In this paper we report the discovery of 200 pulsars for which we present positional and spin-down parameters, dispersion measures, flux densities and pulse profiles. A large number of these new pulsars are young and energetic, and we review possible associations of γ-ray sources with the sample of about 1300 pulsars for which timing solutions are known. Based on …

A Comparison Of Measured Crab And Vela Glitch Healing Parameters With Predictions Of Neutron Star Models, Fronefield Crawford Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Measured Crab And Vela Glitch Healing Parameters With Predictions Of Neutron Star Models, Fronefield Crawford

Faculty Publications

There are currently two well-accepted models that explain how pulsars exhibit glitches, sudden changes in their regular rotational spin-down. According to the starquake model, the glitch healing parameter Q, which is measurable in some cases from pulsar timing, should be equal to the ratio of the moment of inertia of the superfluid core of a neutron star (NS) to its total moment of inertia. Measured values of the healing parameter from pulsar glitches can therefore be used in combination with realistic NS structure models as one test of the feasibility of the starquake model as a glitch mechanism. We …

A Search For The Radio Counterpart Of The Unidentified Gamma-Ray Source 3eg J1410-6147, Michelle Doherty, Simon Johnston, Aj Green, Mallory S. E. Roberts, Fronefield Crawford Jan 2003

A Search For The Radio Counterpart Of The Unidentified Gamma-Ray Source 3eg J1410-6147, Michelle Doherty, Simon Johnston, Aj Green, Mallory S. E. Roberts, Fronefield Crawford

Faculty Publications

We have made radio continuum, H i and X-ray observations in the direction of the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1410–6147, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The observations encompass the supernova remnant (SNR) G312.4–0.4 and the two young pulsars PSRs J1412–6145 and J1413–6141.

We derive a lower distance limit of 6 kpc to the SNR, although interpretation of positive velocity features in the H i spectrum may imply that the SNR is more distant than 14 kpc. PSR J1412–6145, with an age of 50 kyr, is the pulsar most probably associated with SNR G312.4–0.4. X-rays …
