Whether implicit or explicit, social justice and human rights are part of the mission of many philanthropies. Evaluation produced, sponsored, or consumed by these philanthropies that doesn’t pay attention to the imperatives of cultural competency may be inconsistent with their missions.
The American Evaluation Association’s Statement on Cultural Competence provides those who produce, sponsor, and use evaluation an opportunity to examine and align their practices and policies within a context of racial and cultural equity and inclusion. The …

Internal Culture, External Impact: How A Changemaking Culture Positions Foundations To Achieve Transformational Change – With 2024 Prologue, Amy Celep, Sara Brenner, Rachel Mosher-Williams
The Foundation Review
Editor’s Note: This article, first published in print and online in 2016, has been republished by The Foundation Review with minor updates.
This article argues that a foundation’s internal culture is critical to achieving large-scale social change, but that efforts to build a changemaking culture too often are left out of strategy conversations.
While there is no one culture that suits every foundation, a particular set of characteristics must be present in those that seek largescale social change: a focus on outcomes, transparency, authenticity, collaboration, racial equity and inclusion, continuous learning, and openness to risk.
This article offers insights into …

The Foundation Review
Editor’s Note: This article, first published in print and online in 2022, has been republished by The Foundation Review with minor updates.
There is an urgent need for funder investments in the ability of grantee nonprofit organizations to support their staff. Such investments, when done well, can yield significant value for individuals, organizations, and fields of work or movements. Furthermore, the value of these investments can be evaluated and communicated.
This article explores the reasons for and implications of the inadequate response by funders, offers a path forward for designing investments in grantee staff, and documents how funders can capture …
Bias And Whiteness In Public Services, Annie Bélanger
Bias And Whiteness In Public Services, Annie Bélanger
Scholarly Papers and Articles
Race and gender bias intersect in particularly crucial way in Libraries as we experience them today with their roots in Victorian virtuous womanhood and an associated service ethic that requires library colleagues to prioritize user satisfaction even if at the cost of staff wellbeing, and at times, safety. This reality has led to an intertwining of identity, worth, and service ethic that is exacerbated through late stage capitalism that rewards business over impact and asks of us to want more.
On this basis, libraries have been ripe for critical review of our practices. As critical librarianship continues to grow, two …

The Practice Of The Equitable Evaluation Framework™: Context And Introduction To The Special Issue, Marcia A. Coné, Jara Dean-Coffey
The Foundation Review
Welcome to the special issue of The Foundation Review.
For many, this is an introduction to the Equitable Evaluation Framework™, and how some folks in U.S. philanthropy are reimagining evaluation, learning, and research through its practice. For others, you’ve been in practice of the EEF alongside us and other individuals and organizations and are, thus, represented in the offerings shared from your colleagues.
Over the past three years, in partnership with many, we’ve engaged in exploring, puzzling together, and sharing what it means to “be in practice of the EEF.” While impossible to convey the depth, breadth, and richness of …

Improving Health Prevention Screening In A Rural Health Clinic, Shawn M. Mcnally
Culminating Experience Projects
Background: Health prevention screening has recently been highlighted in many initiatives from leading countries around the world. Breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening and osteoporosis screenings are among the highest objectives for many of these initiatives as national health agencies focus on reducing morbidity and mortality by early detection.
Local problem: Baseline quality metrics reported for one clinic show the appropriate ordering of these health screenings is below the national benchmarks and the organizational benchmarks.
Methods: The project was designed as a quality improvement project based in a critical access region serving a rural population.
Interventions: The project intervention …

Formalized Diabetes Self-Management Education In A Safety-Net Clinic, Emanpreet Kaur
Culminating Experience Projects
Diabetes is a complex and chronic illness requiring continuous medical care with multifactorial risk reduction strategies (American Diabetes Association [ADA], 2021). More than 37 million Americans are suffering from diabetes and 90% of them have Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (DMT2) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). The purpose of this article is to review the background, an organizational assessment, a literature review, and the results of the quality improvement project that took place at a safety-net clinic in the Midwest. This project included 16 patients and data was analyzed through descriptive statistics. Results include improved hemoglobin (Hg) A1c, Body …
Improving Utilization Of Clinical Pharmacy Services In A Health Professional Shortage Area, Samantha E. Tallman
Improving Utilization Of Clinical Pharmacy Services In A Health Professional Shortage Area, Samantha E. Tallman
Culminating Experience Projects
Background: Integration of clinical pharmacy specialists (CPS) into primary care has increased over the last decade. CPS are highly educated advanced practice providers and specialize in chronic disease and medication management, and offer additional support to both patients and PCPs. Despite their extensive training and expertise, the role of CPS is often unknown or misunderstood amongst PCPs and results in the underutilization of CPS services. As a result, referrals to their service remain low. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to increase referrals to embedded CPS and identify encounter types by associated diagnoses.
Objectives: Develop and implement a …
Improving Osteoporosis Screening Rates In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Lindsay Marlatt
Improving Osteoporosis Screening Rates In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Lindsay Marlatt
Culminating Experience Projects
Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis related fracture rates are high yet lack of screening and education on osteoporosis remains a significant problem. The United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends bone mineral density testing in women ≥ 65 and in women aged 50-64, based on specific risk factors. Using a screening tool such as the simple calculated osteoporosis risk tool (SCORE) is beneficial in identifying individuals that should be referred for BMD testing. Screening for BMD using dual-energy absorptiometry (DXA) is the gold standard in predicting major fractures, allowing for timely intervention in the primary care setting. Consequently, a plan …

Leaders and managers have an outsized impact on workers’ wellbeing. In facing the reality of constant and unpredictable change, leaders and managers need to consider the humanity of their employees as part of their commitment to equity. We suggest that library leaders and managers need to consider human-centered approaches as part of their leadership toolkit. Human-centered leaders have a strong focus on people and the organizational culture. They layer compassion and empathy in taking actions to fulfill the organization's mission.
We acknowledge that there are situations when taking a human-centered approach to the needs of library employees can feel in …
The Field-Building And Grantee Experimentation Role Of Foundations In Impact Investing As Illustrated By A Gender-Lens Investing Case Example, Courtney Bolinson, Laura Allan
The Field-Building And Grantee Experimentation Role Of Foundations In Impact Investing As Illustrated By A Gender-Lens Investing Case Example, Courtney Bolinson, Laura Allan
The Foundation Review
This article argues for foundations to play two critical roles in the impact investing ecosystem: to commission and/or support research that helps build more equitable and socially just impact investing and to fund grantee-specific experimentation in areas of impact investing and social enterprise that are nascent or developing.
To illustrate what this can look like, this article presents action research conducted on gender-lens investing, describing in detail a 2019 Mastercard Foundation grant to Engineers Without Borders Canada. The project involved two main goals: testing and developing gender-lens investing tools and processes with seed-stage investees during pre- or post-investment phases and …

Leadership Behavior, Stress, And Presenteeism: A Cross-Cultural Comparison, Jan Philipp Czakert, Julia A. M. Reif, Rita Berger
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Presenteeism is the behavior of working with ill-health. Due to associated productivity losses and substantial transmission risks during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, presenteeism is gaining increased attention in occupational psychological research. To understand the complexity of this phenomenon, research on contextual influences is needed. Our study investigated positive leadership behavior (transformational leadership, TFL) and negative leadership behavior (passive-avoidant leadership, PAL) as social-contextual predictors, next to stress. We hypothesized that in countries with high masculine values, presenteeism is more likely to occur. Our study involved 979 employees from the different cultural contexts of Germany, Ireland, Latvia and Spain that answered an …

The Yin And Yang Of Equity-Centered Philanthropy, Douglas Easterling, Laura Mcduffee, Sabina Gesell
The Yin And Yang Of Equity-Centered Philanthropy, Douglas Easterling, Laura Mcduffee, Sabina Gesell
The Foundation Review
Foundations face two competing imperatives when they commit to advancing equity. On the one hand, they are counseled to support and follow the lead of community-based groups that are on the front lines of social change. On the other hand, they are also being challenged to use their power and influence to act boldly to change inequitable structures, policies, and institutions. These two orientations, yin and yang, can take a foundation in different directions and thus cause confusion and internal conflict.
The challenge for a foundation is to balance and integrate the two orientations into a comprehensive and effective approach …

The Concrete Ceiling Of Nonprofit Leadership, Leodis William Aaron Turner
The Concrete Ceiling Of Nonprofit Leadership, Leodis William Aaron Turner
Masters Theses
Abstract
This paper draws on a series of four in-depth interviews with African American executives who lead large non-profit organizations in West Michigan to argue that Black men and women in particular, and people of color more generally, experience a concrete ceiling to nonprofit leadership. The analysis is guided by a social innovation framework. In this case, that includes identifying the intervention needed (symptom to cause), designing methods (imagining solutions), developing solutions (prototyping), creating a plan to systemically innovate (recalibrating the nonprofit leadership pipeline for people of color and in particular, Black people), and scaling the plan (organizational growth and …
Financial Literacy: A Case Study On Current Practices, Briana Lee Hammontree
Financial Literacy: A Case Study On Current Practices, Briana Lee Hammontree
Masters Theses
In the last few years, the concern for financial illiteracy among teenagers has only grown as the economy has shifted. Many teenagers feel unprepared and unsecured moving forward with their finances as adults. This issue is intensified further among low-income and marginalized youths who deal with additional hardship in their lives. Accessibility is a huge issue among teenagers and the role of financial literacy of their lives in education is often predetermined by government officials and policies they can only really advocate for change for but cannot vote on. In this research I explore the concept of utilizing social innovation …

Diving Deep On Equity And Power: Exploring Shifts In Philanthropic Practice With The Iceberg Model, Sonia Taddy-Sandino, Kim Ammann Howard, Lori Nascimento
The Foundation Review
Lessons from the events of this historic time — from a national reckoning with systemic racism to a global pandemic and its economic and social fallout — have deep implications for philanthropy that go beyond grantmaking and include fundamental questions about the sector’s role, power, and influence in advancing equity and social change. Confronting those questions requires a look inward at the practices, policies, structures, mindsets, and cultural norms that govern how foundations operate.
The experience of The California Endowment and The James Irvine Foundation shows what can be learned from this period of crisis and disruption. Through specific examples …

Development Of A Point-Of-Care Ultrasonography Workflow Within A Rural Clinic, Lauren Myers
Culminating Experience Projects
Abstract
Background and Objectives: Healthcare has revolutionized with advancements in ultrasound technology. Among these advancements and the increasing availability of imaging modalities is point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) technology.
Problem: While POCUS has gained considerable ground in primary care, infrastructure to support its utility is deficient. The purpose of this project was to design, pilot, and evaluate a POCUS workflow to facilitate technology utilization and increase access to care.
Methods: Program development and evaluation involves the design, implementation, and evaluation of an evidence-based workflow for POCUS technology. The project was intended to address the needs of individuals in a rural setting. Participants …
Holding Space For Voice: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Gorecki
Holding Space For Voice: Using Powerful Questions And Appreciative Inquiry Conversations To Understand Values And Needs, Annie Bélanger, Preethi Gorecki
Presentations
Change management is often process-centered instead of people-centered. People are centered when we focus on what is good. Appreciative Inquiry’s strengths-based, positive approach to organizational change allows leaders and facilitators to re-center individuals’ voices.
Appreciative Inquiry helps people move toward a shared vision for the future by engaging others in considering what is good, what could be, what should be, and how to co-create the future. It can foster equitable processes that decenter whiteness and deficit-mindset. Powerful conversations connect thoughts and feelings, result in new ideas, develop new perspectives and understandings, and have an increased potential for action. Developing conversations …
Workplace Wellness Programs: Do Programs Impact Employer Healthcare Costs?, Ryan Martin
Workplace Wellness Programs: Do Programs Impact Employer Healthcare Costs?, Ryan Martin
SPNHA Review
With the overwhelming cost of healthcare in the United States and the preponderance of employer sponsored health care, it is no surprise that workplace wellness plans (WWPs), promising to improve employees’ health and reduce healthcare costs, are on the rise. The effectiveness of WWPs in delivering cost savings has been debated over the past several decades as researchers attempted to replicate the savings promised by early case studies and minimize the biases of those studies. The purpose of this literature review article is to summarize the historical debate concerning whether WWPs save employers’ healthcare expenditures and weigh the evidence to …

Doing Philanthropy At The Time Of The Sustainable Development Goals: The Case Of Fondazione Compagnia Di San Paolo, Fulvio Bersanetti, Filippo Candela, Paolo Mulassano
The Foundation Review
This article outlines how strategic philanthropy can align its mission with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by describing the experience of the most important foundation of banking origin in Italy. Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo marked a milestone in 2020 in aligning with the Agenda, applying the Sustainable Development Goals as a rigorous, internationally shared methodological framework and restructuring its operations to focus on three programmatic efforts — Planet, People, and Culture — aligned with those goals.
To complete our examination of this transformation, we conducted a benchmark analysis involving nine case studies of foundations in Europe …
More Than Money: Establishing The Importance Of A Sense Of Purpose For Salespeople, Valerie Good, Douglas E. Hughes, Hao Wang
More Than Money: Establishing The Importance Of A Sense Of Purpose For Salespeople, Valerie Good, Douglas E. Hughes, Hao Wang
Peer Reviewed Articles
Much of the current research on salesperson motivation focuses on extrinsic reward expectancy related to compensation, contests, incentives, and quotas. We find that while salespeople want to make money, they also want to make a difference and contribute to society through their work. In Study 1, the qualitative findings reveal that a sense of purpose–the belief that one is making a contribution to a cause greater and more enduring than oneself–is a significant motivator for salespeople. Hence, in Study 2 we develop a measure for sense of purpose and distinguish it from related constructs. Finally, in Study 3 we use …
