Identifying qualified students who are most likely to be successful in their graduate nursing studies is the goal of the admission process. Because fiscal and human resources are often limited, it is important that universities admit students who have the academic capabilities necessary to complete the degree requirements. This study attempted to determine whether the established admission criteria for graduate nursing students at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) reliably predict success within the graduate nursing program and if so, whether any one criterion is a better predictor of success. Preference And Tranquility For Houses Of Worship, Thomas R. Herzog, Lauren E. Gray, Amy M. Dunville, Angela M. Hicks, Emily A. Gilson

Participants rated houses of worship for one of seven variables: preference, tranquility, age, visual richness, building care, potential for recovery from fatigued attention, and potential for reflection. Factor analysis of the preference ratings yielded four content categories: “contemporary,” “traditional,” “unusual architecture,” and “older red brick churches.” Preference was positively correlated with visual richness and building care in the contemporary and traditional categories and had a positive partial correlation with age in the traditional category. Tranquility was positively correlated with preference, building care, recovery, and reflection in the contemporary category but only with reflection in the traditional category. Making The Team: Conducting Hierarchical Interdisciplinary Community Service Learning Research, Christine Yalda, Carly Hilinski
Faculty Scholarly Dissemination Grants
Service learning programs seek to engage students in projects that will benefit service recipients as well as maximize student learning through activities that inform future professional behaviors and responsibilities. This presentation offers a model for conducting responsible interdisciplinary service learning research that engages and integrates faculty and students across disciplines from initial conceptualization through completion of the study. The model derives in part from a community-based research project that involved over 70 social work and criminal justice faculty and students in studying the lives and needs of poor and homeless clients receiving services from an urban faith-based work program.
