There is a pressing need to retain dually eligible elderly Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries in the community. The objective of this study was to examine median personal care services (PCS) hours, and how increasing PCS to the median (for those below), might delay nursing home placement (NHP) and save cost. Methods: Retrospective study of PCS hours, costs, and NHP in a statewide home and community based waiver program in the Midwest serving 6525 dually eligible Medicare-Medicaid beneficiaries aged 65 and older. Two Minimum Data Set-Home Care assessments and Medicaid claim files were examined to identify PCS hours and cost. A …

Heartside Gleaning Initiative Food Waste Survey, Katelyn Kuhl, Sommer Tuttle, Jessica Villarreal
LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability
Residents of the Heartside neighborhood of Grand Rapids experience a significant amount of poverty and food insecurity. The Heartside Gleaning Initiative is a nonprofit organization that assists Heartside residents by redistributing donated, fresh produce to them. Through survey research, our purpose was to assist the Heartside Gleaning Initiative in finding out what happens to this food once it is distributed; specifically how much food is wasted. Participants included residents that receive food donations as well as nonprofit organizations that receive donations and prepare meals for community members. Through community collaborations, we were able to write a survey, perform the survey, …

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability
Environmental activist and culture critic, Wendell Berry states in “The Pleasures of Eating,” “When food, in the minds of eaters, is no longer associated with farming and with the land, the eaters are suffering a kinds of cultural amnesia that is misleading and dangerous” (Berry 2) The obesity epidemic, mass hunger, the invasion of overly-processed and GMO-contaminated foods are just a few of the frightful consequences of our society’s overall disconnect with the food system. With so many obvious shortcomings, how does one even begin to tackle the wicked problem of food? According to several culture critics, including Michael Pollan, …

Picturing “Doing Gender”, Danielle Lutz
Picturing “Doing Gender”, Danielle Lutz
Photography Senior Thesis Projects
This project explores the idea of “Doing Gender,” a term coined by sociologists Candace West and Don Zimmerman. The photographic series is comprised of diptychs in which I photographed people performing a feminine gender performance, as well as a masculine one. By exploring gender in this way and capturing it on camera, I have illustrated ways in which gender is a learned performance. This paper details the methods used to create this project, as well as its intentions as an analysis of gender performance.
Mythic Rhetoric: Love, Power, And Companionate Marriage In Puccini's Turandot, Valerie V. Peterson
Mythic Rhetoric: Love, Power, And Companionate Marriage In Puccini's Turandot, Valerie V. Peterson
Peer Reviewed Articles
Using a rhetorical perspective, specifically Kenneth Burke's understanding of myths as "forward looking partisanships," this essay explores the mythic story of Turandot and its relationship to love, power, and companionate marriage.1 First, Burke’s understanding of myth is outlined and connected to the history and travels of Turandot. Then, a detailed rhetorical analysis of the 1998 PBS video of Puccini's opera performed at the Forbidden City, Beijing, suggests why the Turandot myth seems to appear in certain places and moments, and what it might have offered to audiences, in this instance, on a spiritual level.

Ghana is a known endemic area for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections, yet the consequences of HBV infection on pregnancy outcomes are unknown. This prospective cohort study was thus conducted among 512 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Ghana, between January, 2011 and December, 2013 to determine the effects of hepatitis B during pregnancy on birth outcomes in Ghana. The HBsAg status of all pregnant women was determined by the latex agglutination test while a researcher administered semi-structured checklist was used to collect demographic/obstetric/medical data of respondents. We obtained 262 HBsAg positive and 250 HBsAg …

Neonatal sepsis poses a major challenge to achieving the MDG-4 due to lack of facilities to implement proposed management guidelines. Identifying risk factors of neonatal sepsis will help put strategies in place to prevent sepsis. This prospective case control study investigated risk factors of neonatal sepsis in the Asutifi District a typical rural setting of the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. A semi-structured check list was used to collect clinical and demographic data from 196 neonates (96 with sepsis as case and 100 without sepsis as control) and respective mothers. Maternal factors that were significantly associated with neonatal sepsis were …

A Pragmatist Reading Of Mary Parker Follett’S Integrative Process, Judy D. Whipps
Faculty Peer Reviewed Articles
For most of the 20th century Mary Parker Follett (1868–1933) was one of the “invisible women” in the history of American philosophy, although her work was taken seriously by philosophers of her time. While some have described Follett as an idealist, this essay develops the pragmatist and feminist elements of Follett’s philosophy. In particular, Follett’s concept of “integration” can be clarified by reading it through a pragmatist lens, connecting it with Dewey’s writing on experience, and with Jamesian pluralism. Follett also shares with Jane Addams an understanding of the creative integrative power of diversity; Addams directly referenced Follett in 1930 …

Mini-implants are titanium alloy rods implanted in the bone of the hard palate to help secure dental prostheses like dentures, fixed crowns, and bridge installations. Recent research suggests pre-surgical determination of bone density quality provides increased mini-implant surgical success rates. In replication of these methods (Moon et al.), we evaluated 19 living individual CT scans from Saint Mary’s Hospital, using Osirix 8.5 imaging software. Bone density was recorded at 90 separate coordinates using Hounsfield units, measured at three millimeter intervals (mediolaterally and anteroposteriorly starting at the incisive foramen.) The data was then analyzed for age differences and average bone density …
