Orrorin tugenensis (Kenya, ca. 6 Ma) is one of the earliest putative hominins. Its proximal femur, BAR 1002′00, was originally described as being very human-like, although later multivariate analyses showed an australopith pattern. However, some of its traits (for example, laterally protruding greater trochanter, medially oriented lesser trochanter and presence of third trochanter) are also present in earlier Miocene apes. Here, we use geometric morphometrics to reassess the morphological affinities of BAR 1002′00 within a large sample of anthropoids (including fossil apes and hominins) and reconstruct hominoid proximal femur evolution using squared-change parsimony. Our results indicate that both hominin …

Each year, more than two million people die from diarrhea-associated diseases. Although there is a global need for safe drinking water, culturally appropriate health teaching is essential to behavior change. This study evaluated the impact of a health education program in a small rural community in Cameroon. Flash cards and a modified version of the CDC-KPC 2000 survey were used to collect data in 57 homes. Children who lived in households with working Manz BioSand filters were less likely to have had diarrhea in the 2 weeks prior to the evaluation. There remained a gap between health knowledge and healthy …

2012 Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease In White-Tailed Deer In Michigan: History, Consequences, And Predictions, Melissa Ann Schrauben

Honors Projects

The summer and fall of 2012 had a reported white-tailed deer death toll of 14,898 as a result of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease in Michigan. These cases include those which were confirmed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and those that were suspected. This makes the 2012 outbreak 13 times worse than the previous worst outbreak in Michigan which occurred in 2010. Observations of the number of deaths and spatial range of deaths due to EHD have shown an increasing trend over the past few years. Factors that influence EHD outbreaks include weather and climate, deer population size, and land …
