The children from Taft Elementary School had a very special treat on Friday when they visited the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University. Not only did they get to see a live musical performance of one of their favorite stories, they also had a special meeting with the author, Mary Pope Osborne.

More than 100 kindergarten through third graders from the Kankakee visual arts magnet school enjoyed the stage production of “Magic Tree House: the Musical” because of the generosity of Osborne and her husband Will, who is also one of the creators of the show.

Recently, hundreds of young children, including 140 kindergarten through second grade students from Bernice Childs Elementary School in Robbins, crowded into The Center for Performing Arts (CPA) at Governors State University to enjoy a rocking, musical depiction of evolution through the stories of some very large and colorful dinosaurs. As the dinosaurs romped across the stage in Mammoth Follies, they taught science lessons and the children laughed, learned, and enjoyed live theater.

One of the last things a performer thinks about when taking the stage is whether the lights illuminating their show are energy efficient.

Fortunately for the environment and the budget of the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University, Mike Krull and Chuck De Brizzio understand the importance of good, energy conserving lighting.

Krull, Technical Director at the Center, and De Brizzio, Chief Operating Engineer at GSU, recently collaborated successfully to earn an $11,500 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. Willie Wonka Appears At The Center For Performing Arts At Gsu, Office Of Public Affairs

The Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University welcomes Light Opera Works of Evanston, which will present its annual summer theatre musical for kids in the Chicago Southland. In conjunction with park districts from Olympia Fields, Homewood/Flossmoor, Crete, Frankfort, Frankfort Square, Alsip, Oak Forest, and Matteson, The Center will host the workshop from June 23 through June 27 at Governors State University.

Limited summer workshop slots are available. Tickets are also now on sale for the culminating, scaled down but energetic performance of the family favorite, “Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory” on June 27, at 7 p.m.

Governors State University Hosts Free Performance By China’S Zhejiang Butterfly Performing Troup, Office Of Public Affairs

The College of Arts and Sciences at Governors State University, in cooperation with Valparaiso University's Confucius Institute, is sponsoring a special performance by China’s Zhejiang Butterfly Performing Troup. The performance will be the first show by professional Chinese artists at the university.

The free event will take place on Friday, February 15, at 8 p.m., at The Center for Performing Arts on the Governors State University campus.
