The Role Of Perennialist Thought In The Development Of Psychedelic Research In The United States, Nathan Keele Springer Aug 2022

The Role Of Perennialist Thought In The Development Of Psychedelic Research In The United States, Nathan Keele Springer

Religious Studies Theses

From the 1960s to the present day, American research into the therapeutic effects of psychedelic drugs has focused on their ability to facilitate “mystical” experiences in test subjects. “Mysticomimetic” research has close ties to perennialist notions of religion that gained popularity over the course of the 20th century. Figures such as William James and Aldous Huxley promoted perennialist ideals within intellectual circles, particularly influencing psychological researchers. As research into psychedelics has gathered momentum from the 2000s onward, claims that mystical experience is key to the compounds’ palliative effects remain tied to perennialist thought, with current research picking up where …

The Role Of Arabic Grammar In Tafsīr: An Analysis Of IʿRāb Al-Jumal In Mughnī Al-Labīb And Al-Kashshāf, Egbal A. Almahatwary May 2022

The Role Of Arabic Grammar In Tafsīr: An Analysis Of IʿRāb Al-Jumal In Mughnī Al-Labīb And Al-Kashshāf, Egbal A. Almahatwary

Religious Studies Theses

This paper scrutinizes the relationship between Arabic grammar and tafsīr “Qurʾānic exegesis” through investigating the phenomenon of iʿrāb al-jumal “the analysis of sentences’ syntactic functions.” Whereas iʿrāb analyzes words’ syntenic relations within one sentence, iʿrāb al-jumal examines the syntactic status of a sentence within an utterance(s). This study argues that grammar plays a significant role in tafsīr. It investigates iʿrāb al-jumal in two medieval works: Ibn Hishām’s Mughnī al-Labīb in grammar and al-Zamakhsharī’s al-Kashshāf in tafsīr to illustrate the importance of grammar in tafsīr. The paper consists of three chapters. The first chapter reviews different approaches in Qurʾānic interpretation, …

Zeal Of The Convert? Comparing The Structure Of Islamic Religiousness Between Convert And Non-Convert Muslims, Daniel Snook May 2019

Zeal Of The Convert? Comparing The Structure Of Islamic Religiousness Between Convert And Non-Convert Muslims, Daniel Snook

Psychology Theses

In popular culture, converts to a new religion, especially Islam, are widely considered overly zealous. This is despite a lack of evidence for this view. But do converts to Islam have faith differently than their ‘born Muslim’ counterparts (non-converts)? Very little research has explored such differences. Consequently, this study compares Islamic religiousness, as measured by the Psychological Measure of Islamic Religiousness (Abu Raiya et al., 2008), between convert and non-convert US Muslims using a series of confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses. In our sample, Abu-Raiya et al.’s (2008) proposed factor structure showed poor model fit. Exploratory factor analyses provide evidence …

Faith In The Fandom: Finding Meaning And Identity In Works Of Science Fiction, Lauren M. Cooper Aug 2016

Faith In The Fandom: Finding Meaning And Identity In Works Of Science Fiction, Lauren M. Cooper

Religious Studies Theses

This thesis examines the ways that works of science fiction are being used to provide tools for negotiating contemporary, modern life and defining identity. The primary method of research for this project is a series of interviews conducted with participants attending a public science fiction and fantasy convention, called Dragon Con in Atlanta, GA. The interviews include questions about the impact of science fiction on entertainment, identity, and community. Incorporating the model of the “fan object” into the way religious studies scholars interpret religion provides insight on a new example of religious individualism that seems to be one new step …

Max Weber And Pentecostals In Latin America: The Protestant Ethic, Social Capital And Spiritual Capital, Keith Smith May 2016

Max Weber And Pentecostals In Latin America: The Protestant Ethic, Social Capital And Spiritual Capital, Keith Smith

Political Science Theses

Many scholars claim that Pentecostalism is the fastest growing religious phenomenon in human history. Using two important essays of Max Weber as a foundation, this thesis examines whether growth of Pentecostalism in Latin America is promoting the Protestant Ethic described by Weber as well as Social Capital and Spiritual Capital. Analyzing data from the World Values Survey, this thesis argues that growth of Pentecostalism in Latin America is not creating a new Protestant Ethic among its followers, nor is Pentecostalism creating any greater Social Capital or Spiritual Capital among its followers when compared to other religious groups in the region. …

Holy Bass: Spirituality In Electronic Dance Music Culture, Malone H. Walker Aug 2015

Holy Bass: Spirituality In Electronic Dance Music Culture, Malone H. Walker

Anthropology Theses

Throughout human history, religious systems have provided individuals with basic knowledge and guidance used to understand and navigate the world. The modern world is no different with people searching for the sacred in new ways and different places. This thesis examines Electronic Dance Music Culture as an example. In order to study spirituality in EDMC I conducted an ethnography of EDM artists. In doing so I set out to answer these questions: How do the facilitators of EDMC conceptualize spirituality and how do those processes interact within EDMCs? So the focus does not lie in discerning a unifying spirituality of …

In The Shadow Of The Beast: The Impact Of Aleister Crowley On New Religious Movements And Contemporary Culture, Robert Jones May 2014

In The Shadow Of The Beast: The Impact Of Aleister Crowley On New Religious Movements And Contemporary Culture, Robert Jones

Religious Studies Theses

In late 19th century Great Britain, there was a revival of interest in the magic and occultism that emerged during the Renaissance. Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) was a product of that revival, one who had an ironically long afterlife, despite all of the controversy that has surrounded him. Crowley should also be remembered as a significant influence upon the founders of a variety of New Religious Movements (such as Gerald Gardner and L. Ron Hubbard). There was increased interest in his work and personality that emerged several decades after his death, as evidenced by the use of his image on the …

Bhaktivedanta Swami's American Scripture, Christa Marie Lasher Apr 2010

Bhaktivedanta Swami's American Scripture, Christa Marie Lasher

Religious Studies Theses

This essay explores ISKCON’s religious text A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada’s commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, the Bhagavad Gita As It Is, as an American scripture. This commentary expressed a philosophy which attracted ISKCON’s American converts and gave voice to the protest they had against the larger American culture. Using Thomas Tweed’s theory of dissent, I show how the Bhagavad Gita As It Is gave the American converts of the 1960s and 1970s a language of dissent in the larger American conversation and allowed them to create an alternative American identity. In this way, the Bhagavad Gita is an American text.

Wiccan Marriage And American Marriage Law: Interactions, Jeanelle Marie Carda Nov 2008

Wiccan Marriage And American Marriage Law: Interactions, Jeanelle Marie Carda

Religious Studies Theses

This project considers the ways in which Wiccan marriage and American marriage law interact with each other. The thesis examines certain aspects of the history of 20th-century American marriage law, the concurrent development of contemporary marriage ritual in Wicca, developing problems in this area, and possible solutions. In particular, the project focuses on the recognition of religious groups and their officials as they are authorized by state and federal law to perform marriages and how this process has affected Wiccan ritual.

Peace And Mind: Religion, Race, And Gender Among Progressive Intellectuals And Activists, David Humphries

History Theses

This paper explores how changing conceptions of religion, race, and gender at the beginning of the twentieth century promoted transnational anti-systemic movements and increased cooperation between progressive intellectuals and political activists. Using the cases of Bertrand Russell, George Bernard Shaw, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Jane Addams, and Sylvia Pankhurst, this paper chronicles and analyzes protest to the First World War and objection to the organization of the world-system.
