Learning From Mistakes: Decision-Making Biases Within The Primate Lineage, Julia Watzek Aug 2020

Learning From Mistakes: Decision-Making Biases Within The Primate Lineage, Julia Watzek

Psychology Dissertations

Humans and animals alike make thousands of decisions each day, and good decision-making is crucial to survive and thrive in a competitive world. Much research has focused on how to make ‘rational’ decisions based on stable and absolute preferences. In reality, however, human and animal decisions are extremely context dependent. We show and act on relative rather than absolute preferences (e.g., relative to irrelevant options, previous choices, or what others receive), and these tendencies can lead to consistently ‘irrational’ behavior. Studying the flaws in our cognitive system can help us learn how it works. This dissertation explored the extent to …

Predictors Of Late Stage Cervical Cancer Diagnoses And Disparities In The U.S. (A Closer Look At The Interactions Between Characteristics Of Access, Women & Place), Yamisha Rutherford

Public Health Dissertations

Background: Approximately 51% of women with cervical cancer (CVC) are diagnosed at a late stage (regional or distant), an outcome associated with increased morbidity and mortality.African American, and Hispanic women, and women residing in specific geographic regions of the (US) are among those most heavily burdened by late stage CVC.The cause(s) of these disparities are multifaceted and not well understood. However, the most significant predictor of late stage CVC diagnosis and disparities is current screening, which is largely impacted by access to care. Thus, the goal of this study was to identify access-related predictors of late stage CVC and develop …

The Differential Incidence Of Gestational Hypertension Among Georgia Counties, Douglas Hoffmann Jan 2020

The Differential Incidence Of Gestational Hypertension Among Georgia Counties, Douglas Hoffmann

Public Health Theses

ABSTRACT

The Differential Incidence of Gestational Hypertension Among Georgia Counties

Douglas G. Hoffmann, MD

October 31, 2019

INTRODUCTION: Gestational hypertension is responsible for a significant number of maternal mortality cases. It is hypothesized that county-level incidence differences of gestational hypertension in Georgia are related to county demographic or environmental characteristics and disease risk.

AIM: This study aims to determine factors related to differential incidence rates of gestational hypertension in Georgia.

METHODS: Data was obtained from the Georgia Department of Public Health and publicly available sources for the years 2013-2017. Gestational hypertension clusters were identified using GeoDa software. Contextual continuous variables …

Public Transit And Ambient Nitrogen Dioxide (No2) Levels In Four Atlanta Neighborhoods, Tareq Alhonaiti Jan 2020

Public Transit And Ambient Nitrogen Dioxide (No2) Levels In Four Atlanta Neighborhoods, Tareq Alhonaiti

Public Health Theses

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to explore elements of the built environment related to transportation, including state and interstate roads, railroads, daily traffic and bus stops and their relationship to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2)levels. Taking place in predominantly African American communities of Atlanta across more affluent and poorer census tracts, this study also considered SES demographics. This study will pay particular attention to identify associations between NO2 levels and proximity to bus stops.

METHODS: NO2 data (ug/kg) was sampled in 2013 and distance to transportation was estimated. SES data was taken from the 2010 …
