Multiple Minority Stress, Problematic Drinking, And Intimate Partner Violence In Sexual Minorities Of Color, Kevin Moino

Psychology Theses

The Minority Stress model (Meyer, 2003) posits that minorities experience stressors related to their marginalized identity that lead to health disparities. The current study addressed limitations in the literature by employing both intersectional and additive approaches to study the combined effects of racial and sexual minority stress on problematic drinking and IPV. 349 cisgender sexual minorities of color were recruited through an online panel service. Participants completed an online survey that assessed multiple minority stressors, problematic drinking, and IPV. Results supported a two-factor (external and internal minority stress) model that included intersectional constructs of both racial and sexual minority stressors. …

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow? Essay On The Economics Of Hurricanes, Yasin Civelek

AYSPS Dissertations

This dissertation examines the health and economic consequences of recurring natural disasters by estimating the effect of hurricane exposure on various health outcomes, as well as associated changes in labor supply and housing cost. Considering that a substantial portion of the US population lives in hurricane-prone areas, and hurricanes are likely to grow in magnitude in future as a result of global warming, understanding the full short and long-term impacts of hurricanes are essential to craft optimal policy responses.

Long-Term Health Effects Of Family Income Received At Different Stages In The Life Cycle, Nicardo Mcinnis

AYSPS Dissertations

When studying longer-term outcomes, there might be complicated dynamics which can only be understood by taking a holistic life cycle approach. I estimate the long-term health effects of family income received at different phases in the life cycle from conception up to the point at which health outcomes are observed in early adulthood. I construct a unique life-course data set from conception up to age 32, using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Employing a two-stage least squares estimator, I instrument for family income with two instruments: simulated income and simulated Earned Income Tax Credit benefits. For health status as …

Investigating The Oral Health Of Individuals With Depression: Finding From The 2015-2016 National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey (Nhanes), Bayan Ali M Almohaimeed

Public Health Theses

Background: Recent studies have shown an association between oral disease (e.g. periodontal) and depression. However, most of these studies did not examine depression in association with other critical oral health outcomes such as preventative dental care and dental care access, as well as oral health-related quality of life. Therefore, the study aims to investigate the association between depression with indicators of oral health taking into account sociodemographics and chronic disease indicators (CDI).

Methods: The data were obtained from 2015-2016 NHANES. Our independent variable is depression status, which was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The dependent variables are oral …
