"Big Black Beasts": Race And Masculinity In Gay Pornography, Desmond Goss Dec 2017

"Big Black Beasts": Race And Masculinity In Gay Pornography, Desmond Goss

Sociology Dissertations

Although there is a good foundation of feminist research at the intersection of performative labor, pornography, and sexuality, there are few (if any) published studies that examine race in porn content intended for gay men’s consumption. What’s more, existing research samples solely from corporatized porn, which is expressly produced, scripted, and directed. Bound by the conventions of the market, however, corporate pornography must abide by a consumer demand that reflects white machinations of black sexuality rather than the self-proclaimed sexual identity of African American men. Instead, I employ an exploratory content analysis of pornographic videos categorized as “ebony” on a …

Blame Attribution In Rape Crimes: The Effects Of Willing Substance Use, Race, And Rape Myth Acceptance, Nedeljko Golubovic Aug 2017

Blame Attribution In Rape Crimes: The Effects Of Willing Substance Use, Race, And Rape Myth Acceptance, Nedeljko Golubovic

Counseling and Psychological Services Dissertations

Rape is a highly prevalent crime, and it is one of the most severe traumatic events experienced by women. Previous researchers have found that, unlike other crimes, blame attribution in rape cases is inconsistent and influenced by many external elements (Bieneck & Krahe, 2011; Grubb & Turner, 2012; Masser, Lee, & McKimmie, 2010; Stewart & Jacquin, 2010). In this study, the influence of willing substance use and race on attribution of blame from a sample of 316 undergraduate students attending a large, Southeastern, public, urban university was examined. More specifically, results from this investigation described how the type of substance …

A Multi-Level Discourse Analysis Of African American, Middle School Girls? Science Identity Development, Katherine Wade Aug 2017

A Multi-Level Discourse Analysis Of African American, Middle School Girls? Science Identity Development, Katherine Wade

Middle and Secondary Education Dissertations

This research argues that the lack of African American women in science careers is the result of a nuanced and complicated process and can only be adequately addressed through consideration of multiple levels of discourse. Specifically, a better understanding of macro level discourses that are present in and circulated through schools and work to position African American girls in ways that are outside of science learning is necessary. This research used a critical ethnographic approach to explore the science experiences of African American middle school girls. Data were collected on the macro (school wide), meso (classroom and after school program), …

National Identity, Social Justice, And Internal Minorities: A Critique Of David Miller's Liberal Nationalism, Shaila Bora Aug 2017

National Identity, Social Justice, And Internal Minorities: A Critique Of David Miller's Liberal Nationalism, Shaila Bora

Philosophy Theses

In this thesis I argue that David Miller has not successfully generated an account of nationalism that is liberal. I first present Miller’s account the nation, national identity and national culture. I then draw out how the ability of internal minorities to contest repugnant elements of national identity or culture is deeply ties to the liberal character of nationalism. I then argue that the exclusion of particular identities that is required by Miller’s public sphere deprives internal minorities of the epistemic resources they need to challenge repugnant elements of national culture or identity. This puts the liberal character of Miller’s …

Examining The Integration And Use Of Culturally Responsive Mathematics Pedagogy In Preservice Teachers Reflections And Practice: Implications For Black Children, Natasha Nicola Ramsay-Jordan

Middle and Secondary Education Dissertations

Prospective teachers of diverse students such as Black children, need to have opportunities in their professional study to develop the shared knowledge, perceptions and attitudes required for effective implementation of culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy. This instrumental qualitative case study began investigative and exploratory work through the coupling of qualitative research methodology and critical race theory to examine four preservice secondary mathematics teachers’ (PSMTs) experiences using culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy (CRMP) in classrooms to teach Black children. The research questions addressed were: How do PSMTs negotiate their experiences of teaching mathematics to Black children while immersed in CRMP professional learning activities …

Mixed Messages: The Effect Of Social Location, Parental Communication About Sex, And Formal Sexual Education On Protective Sexual Behaviors, Eryn G. Viscarra May 2017

Mixed Messages: The Effect Of Social Location, Parental Communication About Sex, And Formal Sexual Education On Protective Sexual Behaviors, Eryn G. Viscarra

Sociology Dissertations

This dissertation tests if a young adult’s social location determines what type of information he or she will receive about sexual health from parents and formal sexual education programs. I also test whether sexual education mediates direct associations between social location and 4 protective sexual health behaviors: condom communication, consistent condom use, delaying sexual debut, and reducing the number of lifetime sexual partners. Using the 2011-2013 wave of the National Survey of Family Growth, I look for differences in sexual education and engaging in protective sexual health behaviors among white, Hispanic, and African American men and women ages 15-24. I …

Attitudes Toward Interracial Marriage In The United States Military: Black-White Contrasts, Leanna R. Greenwood May 2017

Attitudes Toward Interracial Marriage In The United States Military: Black-White Contrasts, Leanna R. Greenwood

Sociology Theses

In the midst of increasing multiracial identification and diversity in the United States, I examine whether White and Black military veterans hold different attitudes toward interracial marriage than those held by their coethnics in the general population. Using the General Social Survey, I examine the likelihood of military members opposing marriage between a close relative and a partner of a race different from the respondent’s own, and whether their views are significantly different from their non-military coethnic counterparts. I use binary logistic regressions to assess whether opposition toward interracial marriage varies by military status and race. Results indicate that Whites …

Embodying Cosplay: Fandom Communities In The Usa, Natasha L. Hill May 2017

Embodying Cosplay: Fandom Communities In The Usa, Natasha L. Hill

Anthropology Theses

Cosplay is a portmanteau of costume and play, referring specifically to role-play. Cosplay consists of various costumed role-playing, such as anime, manga, video games, science-fiction, fantasy, horror, mythology, etc. In the 1990s, cosplay emerged as a popular street fashion subculture in Japan that has become a worldwide phenomenon. Cosplay was already present in North American popular culture in association with comic and science-fiction conventions. These events at the time were considered masquerades, not cosplay. Cosplay communities rely primarily on maintaining social relationships via internet communication and word of mouth. The standards for what constitutes cosplay are upheld by individuals, the …

Understanding Youth Perceptions Of Police Legitimacy, Sara Hockin May 2017

Understanding Youth Perceptions Of Police Legitimacy, Sara Hockin

Criminal Justice and Criminology Theses

Police-community interactions became a highly publicized topic in the United States following several recent police-involved shootings. Previous research shows several factors predict attitudes and behaviors toward police, including neighborhood context, race, offender status, and experiencing procedural justice. Contact with actors in the criminal justice system can begin at a young age. Based on these issues, the current study focused on two primary research questions: What are youth’s perceptions of police legitimacy? What experiences have shaped those understandings? Using semi-structured interviews with a sample of 28 youth ages 13-17 from diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods, the current study sought to identify the …
